this is what I mentioned often: two different things… your “issue” can you simple fix by your self with usage of nvidia control panel ( has nothing todo with vsync )
Example (sorry, german )
So you can fix the High-FPS , but not the High-Load because of Hangar
Thanks for the tip, it’s definitely a good one. However, I tried limiting the app and it just doesn’t seem to play nicely with my system. Limited to 60, no vsync, it brings the GPU power use way down from 400 to around 140 in the menus, but in the sim it’s noticeably less smooth. The framerate hovers around 60 and gsync is active, but it’s very clearly stuttering when I move the camera. It doesn’t look to me like it’s running at 60, even though it says it is. There’s a problem with the frame delivery timing when the Nvidia cap is activated.
Incidentally, there does appear to be a hard framerate cap somewhere in the sim - right at the start of the loading process I noticed the dev mode fps counter hold at 600.0 for a moment, it wouldn’t go above that. So maybe they put a decimal point in the wrong place somewhere (or it’s just the limit of the fps counter).
It seems like the menu issue described in this thread is the same issue seen when updating MSFS; nothing is being rendered in 3d, yet while a software update runs the CPU and GPU are maxed out. I found a very simple workaround; right-click the title bar for MSFS. In the screenshot below, I marked when I right-clicked. Notice that GPU drops to nearly nil while CPU drops to expected levels and the download continues at the same speed. Won’t work too well if you still want to use your PC, but decent enough workaround to get through a night of downloading. Maybe this will help the Devs fix it.
This has been a known issue for over a year now. C’mon MS/Asobo, save some trees!
lol… I try these while next update.. Because of background limiter I have no big issues with gpu-load while downloading the updates, but these seems more efficent as the background fps limiter
Are you asking why all of us can’t be as smart as you? Butt, seriously.
This issue involves multiple scenarios; you are talking only about minimization (which sounds like a decent workaround btw), something the game should do on it’s own and if not at-release certainly some time between then and 12 MONTHS later.
Also, I don’t have a g-sync monitor; do you think that would still work?
All games have this. What Asobo need to do is stop using so much gpu resources for the menu. But other than that all games have max framerate in menus.
I think option to limit the frames in background apps should be available either way. It’s in control panel you set the desired fps target there and when you minimize the game it runs at that fps.
For now what can you do is go into control panel and limit the fps before updating the game each time, limit it to 15 for example. I usually just play something else while MSFS is updating.
Even with the game set to 60 fps and VSync on, the game would render up to 144 Hz because that is my monitors refresh rate.
I use RTSS or Riva Tuner Statistics Server to limit the fps. The great thing is you can have different fps limits for different games and that RTSS does limit the fps in the most perfect way (as in no added lag or anything).
You have a global profile, which is always in effect if you haven’t added your own “profile”. To add your own, simply click “Add” and select the exe file of your game and make adjustments on the right. That’s it.
because:
a) the wish is a in-game limiter , instead to set a limit of msfs in e.g. NVCP. I know, this is necessary for most of the games to do outside of the game, but is just a wish.
b) and there is a issue hidden in this topic that a high gpu load is caused because hangar rendering.
c) high load while downloading if you not limit the fps manually ( 144fps is not a limit )
d) may be I forgot some what
Together with MSI Afterburner you can use RTSS you have a fps limit and when you actually fly you can press a key-combination and turn the limit off. Maybe couple it with “BATT ON” on your hardware so you can’t forget to put the limit back on after flying.
They need to provide an option to reduce the max framerate in menu. Otherwise, I notice it’s trying to sync with my monitor refresh rate and pegs the GPU with 100% utilization. Many games now have two separate settings: 1) max frame rate in game and 2) max frame rate in menu. They need to implement #2 to fix this.
What I don’t understand is why a 3D hanger is needed at all? When launching DCS & X-Plane 11, it takes <45 seconds to get to the main menu but with MSFS 2020 it takes updates of 5 minutes. What I think is a batter idea over the FPS cap would be an option to disable the 3D hanger menu. Completely pointless in my opinion
300 flying hours, about 1100 hours ingame (I tend to have the game running when in menus, since it’s a super slow game to load - meanwhile I use my other computer in my office). I have a 3090 and it pretty much maxes it out in the menus. 800 hours is equivalent to 33 days of the card running at max.
That’s about 288 kwh wasted ; largely due to my mistake, but since this is such a silly issue you’d think it would be fixed quickly – Amazon fixed it in days for their game that ran at unlimited framerate.
With that said - I think I can cap it in the nvidia control panel, just seems silly that MS cannot/are unwilling to fix something this basic.
Just set a frame rate cap, and it will stop your 3090 from running flat out like that. I’ve had mine set to 60fps since last year, as I don’t want anything more than that.
