Lower Resources in the Menu, Downloading, and Minimized. FPS cap?

it’s a little bit another aspect of 100% GPU load, but we can also track it in here.

A “game” normaly does not limit fps within it’s menu. If you not have enabled Vsync to max your FPS at your monitor fps, you get allways highest possible fps. Thus, you can try to enable it, but depends on your monitor.

The download UI might be then again another think, as the in-game menue.

The aspect I mentioned is, that my GPU is in full load to reach my Vsync target 4k/75fps because of “some background rendering”. If developers “fixed” this ( possible let disable us some effects in menu) you get without a limit more fps because your GPU have more ‘free power’.

Possible developers can think about the whole topic :

  • “how to reduce GPU load within the main menu”

PS.: so, your issue is more like

+1 !! Reduce FPS in Menu! I dont need 100% GPU load while using a simple UI or Downloader…

Also, my GPU (2070) is doing 100%/200 W on the download screen. Imagine all those computers using an hour or more to download the world update tomorrow clocking 200-300 W. What a waste of energy.

Before spawning on an airport to start a flight, my GPU usage already exceeds 95% at the welcome page. This is just after loading the MSFS program and before input anything. When in VR flight, the GPU usage drops below 60%. If during VR flight I go to desktop, i.e. move the mouse out of MSFS window, GPU usage again exceeds 95%. This is very counterintuitive. I am not sure whether it is a bug or related to my setup. Thoughts?

My HW: 10700k OC’d @5.1 GHz, RTX 2080, Rift S, MS version MSFS.

It’s a known phenomenon. You’ll see your frame rate skyrocket into the three digits if you have VSync off at Main Menu. The problem is the rendered background of the Main Menu is constantly being drawn by the GPU. We’ve asked for a GPU limit when in Menu.

So, should I turn VSync on in graphics setting? Since I don’t fly 2D, I don’t care how good it looks on monitor, just want to save some wear and tear on GPU and prefer not hearing fan noise when not in flight.

A general suggestion, before updating, activate vsyc 20 fps. in this case all background activities are performed with reduces maximums. 50-60 watts. The appropriate setting can be made in the usercfg.opt file in your user directory (C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache)

VSync 1

Set an FPS limit in your display driver. 60fps works for me.

Can’t speak to the impact on VR as I’m only a 2D user, but I do just because I don’t need the additional and inefficient stress on my system just being at the Main Menu.

Gpu usage is high when viewing the World Map because the Hangar is being rendered behind the map. It’s all blurred out, but it’s still there.

Just to try helping others. I have a Z370 Asus motherboard, I9-9900 and MSI RX570. It did reboot occasionnally, especially when crashing (a good pilot should not crash! LOL). Found the issue. Got into the Radeon software for the RX570 and change the curve of the fans, so that it would not go as high in temperature. Fan is noisy, but only when I play. MSFS is hungry on resources, and as soon as I open it, the temperature of the GPU goes up. It used to be 75C and more. Now with the adjustment, it stays around 64C and no more crashes up to today. Just for fun, check the rivers at CSJ4 and CYRQ. You will find that the rivers are 200 ft over the general terrain. Weird!

It shouldn’t be optional IMHO, it should be their, period. What ever the player decide for the gameplay itself (when flying), the menu, the loading bar, the hangar, etc. should be limited without asking user permissions. Tons of games act like this and it’s logical. You can’t let a machine run on free wheel like this when displaying so little things.

So I’m in, voted !

I also remember when the Downloader wasnt buggy (around november when I was able to play flightsim) that my PC went totally crazy in the main menu
If you sometime will fix the problem with the downloader (keeps resetting) and I can play flightsim again please also fix this problem here - the first game where the main menu costs 100% of the GPU.. holy..

Back in the days of FSX and P3D, it is advised to set FPS limit in NVidia Control Panel but leave the in game setting at unlimited. So maybe having a menu FPS limiter in MSFS is unnecessary?

To me the problem is not about limiting FPS, but about optimizing the game to get rid of unnecessary rendering. If I move mouse outside of MSFS window onto desktop during flight, GPS usage also ramps up from 60% in game to 95% in desktop. So the unnecessary rendering is not limited to menu screen. It may be always there in the background, which robs performance of game itself and should be removed.

yes..
different things:

  1. high GPU usage while download ( e.g also mentioned from @UnsealedKarma36 , @S3RI0US )
  2. no default fps limit in UI ( e.g. also mentioned from @S3RI0US )
  3. 100% GPU usage in main-menue because some ‘not usefull rendering’ ( the thread main topic )

@GuiHuy
the Vsync workaround is already mentioned. Problem is: you have to play ping-pong with this setting and it is not realy helpfull in special for Issue 3 ( the main topic ), because my 2080TI runs in full load to reach my “normal” Vsync Target.

I don’t use Community Mods after updates. This is an ongoing issue with my GPU howling in the menu.

I would love a basic, menu like FSX that puts zero load on the GPU. Frustrating.

Yes…

the reported 100% GPU load in main-menu still exists in 1.13.16.0.

( and also while the Updater is running. But in this case you can minimize the window to let run the GPU not in 100%. )

The last thing I need is to limit my frame rates. :frowning:

yes… but at least since 1.13.16.0 the Vsync Bug is fixed

Thus, I currently think about to set it at the first Vsync Step (30) and get with my 75FPS monitor max 37.5 fps .

When in Main Menu or in Pause the graphics is 3D rendered constantly. That makes my fans spin like mad and my rig dissipates a lot of heat unnecessaryly. Cause of the loading times I don’t like to shut down the sim for e.g lunchbreak.

Please make the main menu and pause 2D, let the rig rest. Asobo, be nice to the environment.
