Is there any mesh out with better elevation data than the default?

If you search on flightsim.to, you’ll find high resolution DEM data for various parts of the world. Hope you have a lot of free drive space, because the data sets are huge.

I haven’t seen any real issues with the existing terrain. Comparing the MSFS stock Hawaii to FS9’s shows just how ridiculously better it is.

yeah, I haven’t had many issues either and just a random thing isn’t Hawaii great when you fly over it.

One issue is the transparent strips in mountainous regions. I’ve not seen that yet in the higher resolution meshes.
You just have to see what Switzerland, and Austria look like with these. They are well worth the download.

Have to give a +1 for Austria and Switzerland. The 10m DEM for Austria is amazing - unbelievably sharp mountains and ridges. Even the shorelines of the lakes look better.
Never seen a simulator in looking so good in this respect.

As already said, there alre lots for free on flightsim.to and also lots of them as Payware on simmarket.
I can highly recommend them, especially for the Alps regions.
However, ASOBO said that they basically have pretty good elevation-data but there seems to be some issues with the “morphing”, so mountains appear more rounded as they should. So, we might see some improvement of the default elevations too in the future.

Yes the too soft, smooth, and rounded outlook of the mountains is not only caused by low mesh, but algorithm that determines the raggedness of the surface of the mountains. Wish they can improve on this issue. FSX and X-plane don’t have this problem, and they look better with the same mesh resolution.

I can recommend these for Norway, but make sure to remove them before the Scandinavia update… make some pictures… and compare. When that one is less quality, you can put these back in,
NOTE for screenshot photographers: as of 2021/06/25, wait for an update… the water level near Preikestolen is 5-10 m off… as the mini-update 17.3 supposedly “changed elevation data” better check your Northern DEMs

I find the problem about add-on scenery (specially mesh sceneries), they should not be available for downloading, but for online streaming, because of the huge amount of data. Asobo should investigate (or they allready do it) to allow developper to sell their product as a service, so no download is needed, without any filling of hard disk space… just a market model which allows to stream the data, so orbx or freeware are available this way

The two Austria 10M DEM files com to 3.2GB. Not exactly huge in my book.
Switzerland is another 600MB, the Alps another 500MB.
Smaller than todays update by a significant margin.

I’m loving all the mesh files that are available on flightsim.to in the sim, they are so well done by the couple of authors putting these out there.
