Meta Quest 3 - VR performance

No, you can use Virtual Desktop with the Windows Store version of MSFS no problem.

These are the steps I took.

  1. On the Quest headset purchase and install Virtual Desktop.
  2. On the PC, google Virtual Desktop Streamer and run this program.
  3. You’ll need to pair the two together, in the Streamer app enter your Oculus username. Virtual Desktop should recognise this and pair the applications.
  4. You need to use Steam OpenXR runtime libraries. Install Steam/SteamVR and in the SteamVR Settings select OpenXR and click on the option to switch to the SteamVR runtime, you need to confirm this as well in a popup dialog box. If you’ve already done this the button changes to ‘Manage OpenXR API Layers’.

That should be it, so long at SteamVR is running with the SteamVR OpenXR runtime libraries (may need a restart) then you should be good to fire up MSFS and switch to VR, otherwise you’ll get headset not found.

If you want to get back to a Meta Link/Air for PCVR and you have Oculus apps, you’ll need to switch back to the Oculus OpenXR runtime libraries, which is equally easy. Just open the Oculus app and go to Settings, General and for OpenXR Runtime click on Set Oculus as active.

I’m loving the Quest headset so far, initially it appeared lower resolution and shimmering in the Meta Home environment, but once you have a PCVR application running the true talents of the display really shine, and coming from a G2 owner, seeing my desktop in VR in full clarity is something to behold!

To anyone that hates the default strap setup with the Quest 3: I bought the elite strap today and it was a night and day positive improvement. Meta should have used this by default. The factory included strap is a horrible design.

anyone have issues with sound not working in VR mode, this is what fixed it for me.

in VR mode exit steamVR, this will take you back to your VD. Then in VD on the bottom left screen click enter SteamVR, this will enter steam vr but you will need to go to your monitor and press CTL TAB to get Fs back into VR mode, then put your Q3 back on and you should have sound again.

Windows 11 keeps disabling my Quest 3 audio with is annoying, have to go to Control panel and check it’s set to default before I start sim

It’s very easy IMO, considering all the problems people have with Airlink. I’ve been using wired headsets for “sitting” games since 2016 and the cable was never a big issue. I just wish Q3 had a proper video connection, not USB C.

I went ahead and returned my Quest 3. Just not willing to take that level performance hit in trade for the better lenses. I was well used to the “sweet spot” of the G2 so not worth it to me to spend this kind of money to backwards in FPS to where I was a year+ ago.

What GPU do you have?

What is sidequest?

It is an Application for Windows to sideload Games and change spepecific settings like FFR. Just google it

I’m running an i9 11900k. Will be stepping up to a 13900 soon.

What graphics card do you have?

For my setup : i7 13700K + RTX4080 + QUEST3 it works like that:

  1. Cable Link - OPENXR in term of performance is the same as VD + SteamVR. The picture quality is a bit better via Cable Link + OPENXR dur to some lower bandwith and compression via Air Link. Air link VD running at ma 200Mbits.

  2. In term of performance - OPENXR has big advantage over SteamVR + VD because of FOV eating via oculus debug tool. FOV at 0.8 gives 8fps more in ma setup - with fov 1.0 is around 42fps at resolution 3000x3000. FOV 0.8 gives around 50FPS. It allows to crank resolution to 3500x3500 with 42 fps.

Is there any tool for steamVR to adjust FOV ?

pawel

I have the same components and am very happy with VD+VDXR (Beta) as it performs much better than Oculus or SteamVR. I recommend you try it as soon as VDXR is released.

Thanks, I wonder if you can set FOV. Can You ? Otherwise, it would be nice to have that option in VD.

I have a 4090

I don’t know about FOV and VD. One of the reasons I love the Q3 is the wider FOV compared to the G2 so I don’t even try to reduce that.

So, I will now get rid of my headset… enough is enough! But not the Q3 need to leave, I will now definitely sell my G2.

For owners of 4090 or 4080, this might be a starting point if not yet found your settings:

YoutTube VR Flight Sim Guy

While yesterday I found a setting with 72hz 36FPS locked where I said, well lets try this more in detail, looks nice and fluid. Today I took the settings from the Video as Baseline (owning a 4090). About the 940 Bitrate I’m not sure if it is really needed…

OpenXR Toolkit:
Overwrite Render Resolution: 3xxx on 3xxx (play with this)
Turbo: On

Oculus Tray Tool:
I set ASW to off (he set it to Auto)
modified FoV Multiplier a litte bit (just to have more headroom, only decent value - up to you)

Oculus SW:
80Hz, 1.0 Rendering

Oculus Debug Tool:
Tried Bitrate 900 & 500, did not see a difference
Link Sharpening: Quality

MSFS:
TAA: 100
AMD Sharpening: 200
Repro Mode: OFF
Nvidia Reflex Low Latency: On
TLOD: 200
OLOD: 155

Settings: mixed Ultra & High

Audio: separate Headset

Connection: STOUCHI VR Headset LInk Cable (with separate Power connection)

For testing I usually use the NYC Discovery Flight, so everything is always exactly the same - good for comparison.

Then I went to my home airports, just flying a bit arround and tweaking a little bit here and there (olod/tlod/TAA/DLSS… just to see).
OK, locked the FPS to 40, Headroom between 5-20%… good. I had some stutters… but only in the audio!! I did not look into details here - because if you are coming from a HP G2… the sound is ugly in the Q3  So I already planned to use my headphones in the future… So I did. Super fine!

Then I started one of my usual flights which I had done with the G2 for so many times! It was a nightmare! Oh no, sorry - a dream came true! I never ever had such a smooth flight from start till end! 40 FPS locked!! No stutter, exceptional edge to edge clarity - it was a pleasure to look outside the window! Only at touchdown FPS went for seconds to 35…

Flying the Citation Longitude, live traffic FSLTL, no Multiplayer, Land and Sea Traffic around 50, no Rolling Cache.

Good luck and enjoy!

edit: Just to let you know. On DX11 - not tried 12 yet.

Yes Steve (VR Flight Sim Guy) does have affiliate links, because he’s passionate about these companies producing VR headsets and has visited many - of course he’s going to try the higher-end headsets - that’s a major part of his channel as these headsets are more exclusive to the general population.

The initial impressions video was exactly that, an initial impressions and they aligned to mine as well. Steve has released a second video praising the Q3 clarity and has always represented Meta and Oculus products fairly so I don’t agree with your view here.

My thoughts exactly. I tried Steve’s settings initially and my first thought was - it’s my G2 - that’s amazing and then it dawned on me… OMG I can see everything clear!

Looking over London at Hyde park and I never realised with the G2 I was looking at a particular spot in the scenery, now my sensors were picking up way more detail - all the trees, parkland areas, surrounding buildings everything really clear from a distance. Some more examples, flying over the O2 arena and the cables lifting the structure were all visible and sharp, that’s never really happed before because of the agressive degrading of clarity in the G2 headset.

Of course the flip side to all of this was using Steve’s setting I had to use High-End instead of Ultra and you can notice the SDE but that’s not that bad really. Looks like your settings gets us a bit closer to the original G2 performance, I will try this and keep tweaking, thank you @TSon0711!

Well that’s your opinion and I respect that. At least he is finally giving Link a go instead of always relying on Virtual Desktop. Who knows, one day he may even figure out how to set it up properly, and maybe give Air Link a go as well. I have got both my 1 week old Q3 and +11mo QPro/i913900k/rtx4090 running very well with Link and Air Link. For me, even though distant objects can look a little better, I prefer the freedom of wireless with Air Link. I did also spend a day a few days ago testing these out with Virtual Desktop and I didn’t see any reasons to continue to use it for now. I have used VD for +4.5yrs (starting with my Q1) so I kinda know how to set it up and use it properly.

I believe that he could have done the same, and gotten better results with the QPro that he ditched after trying it for 30 minutes about 10 months ago because it was too uncomfortable. He was too lazy to do a simple top strap mod. Funny thing is he’s still using the stock Q3 cloth strap and doesn’t seem to be complaining about that, lol!

If you follow his current Q3 settings and they work well for you, that’s great imho. For me, they are a convoluted way to get decent results with msfs but he’s going to find that they don’t work well with other PCVR apps. This will probably lead him back to using Virtual Desktop, lol!

He uses the oculus desktop app device settings at 80Hz (which is also what I use btw) and then leaves the res slider in the recommended for beginners middle position (1.0x) which is very low res. Then uses OpenXR toolkit to upscale these. The end result may be ok but if he had of just started off with the res slider full right he wouldn’t have even needed to use OpenXR Toolkit in the first place imho. He’s also using 960mbps bitrate with Link and I find that’s way too high imho. I think if he tests this out a little more he’ll find that 500-650mbps works best and has a lot less latency.

He also has mentioned numerous times how much he hates DLSS and prefers TAA because it gives him better cockpit clarity. What he doesn’t know is that if he applied some super sampling in ODT (I use OTT to do this and to disable ASW) he would get the same great clarity with DLSS/balanced and things would run butter-smooth with lower gpu temps.

In any case, if you think his headset assessments and settings are useful, then please continue to enjoy these.
