Yes Boats do have autopilots ![]()
Yeah of course autopilot xD. Maybe you could redirect the navigational data to your phone while you do a crossing on autopilot and log in if you encounter a hurricane or perfect storm heavy weather.
But the most use of boating I do see for VR as a nice chill out lobby before you decide to go flying. Could be a nice recreational area, probable more fun than to hang out on an airfield. Though that could be an option as well. From this lobby you could then do your multiplayer flight planing, talking…
Not sure why the scoffing here. We had many types of boats in FSX, to include sail-able sailboats. In an area with good add-on scenery like an ORBX region, it could actually be pretty good. There are places where the default MSFS scenery is at least that good. And the wind and CFD in MSFS could make sailing pretty darn good.
Then there’s the fact that navigation works realistically in MSFS, as it did in FSX. Sure you can use a GPS, but a boat is also a great way to learn dead reckoning and celestial navigation to, yes, cross an ocean. These skills are transferable to aircraft in MSFS (and the real world, for that matter.)
Any kind of variety in this virtual world can only be a good thing that makes the software relevant for more people.
How about adding both boats and submarines like in P3D?
I was just going to suggest submarines! Subnautica was one of the few games I played in my “middle aged” years.
I’ve been disappointed at emergency water landings I’ve had to make in airplanes as they don’t sink. I had to ditch my first flight of the Darkstar in a lake. You can actually take back off from water without using floats in all the airplanes.
Airplanes and boats are very similar. Submarines perhaps even more so.
You are thinking like Steve Jobs or Elon Musk.
Boats also need a crew.

For my part I was just having a bit of light hearted fun in a very serious world. No harm intended ![]()
Personally, I think that it is great that the sim has the potential to be used in many different ways although in truth I am not quite sure that the sim environment is quite there yet. I actually do like the idea of bringing different things to the sim whether that is boats, jet skis, animal life, trucks or whatever. There is nothing to be gained in elitism other than a closed and sterile mind.
We already have a great (though not perfect) environment within FS20 so my feeling in truth is that we should start using this to do ‘whatever floats our boat’ (pun intended) ![]()

Oh that would be the cherry on top. Zip down to the airport lounge to have a snack, maybe take a poo or something .. and off we go back up into the tree ![]()

The thing is these boats are not study level, I hope we can get a PMDG boat that meets the standard, otherwise this sim will still be a game and Xplane 11 will remain the only real boat simulator, since the physics are much better.

Water in rivers in MSFS doesn’t flow, does it?
Not aware of any games where it does. There is no risk of getting washed down stream crossing a random river in any FPS or FRPG that I am aware of.
lol yes I agree, and I would like to see some professional water skiers. You know the kind where they build a 10-person pyramid?
While you all are joking I have a collection of actual detail sims
Ship Sim Extreme (ships and boats)
Train Sim World 2020, 2 and 3 (trains)
Sub Sim - Cold Waters (Submarines)
Space Sim - Orbitor 2016 (Shuttles and spacecrafts)
Fighter Sim - DCS World (fighter jets)
All these are detail in operation just like MSFS.
There are plenty more detail sims out that I donot have like Farm Sim, Bus Sim, Constrution Sim etc…
Now if only they can all come together in MSFS what a world it wold be.
All we need now is a Catalina 32 for some sailing adventures, an air boat for swamp adventures and a chaparral 23 for some inland waterway exploration now that we got the ocean covered with that new yacht ![]()
GTA5 has really nice flowing rivers, rapids, waves, and waterfalls that interact with and will move the player and vehicles. It is of course a cartoon farce when comparing it as a flight simulator. And yet the game’s recreation of the natural environment does many things vastly better than Flight Simulator. I wish we could pick and choose features from both platforms. Bush plane and sea plane flights would be so much more enjoyable with all the little details of the GTA world. I’m sure GTA5 is actually a better boat simulator than Flight Simulator is right now even with its mickey mouse controls. The water is actually transparent and the boats move up and down in waves and swells, something Flight Simulator can’t do last I checked and is pretty much a requirement if you want to simulate water vehicles.
Hope it has autopilot! don’t think the visibility will be great locked inside the barrel… ![]()
