Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 General Feedback

I posted a more detail analysis of my position on “predictive” caching and related ideas here:

… and it contains this quote that seems to fit here:

Some pilots … ok, not a sightseeing goose like me … invest a lot of time in planning their flights. Why ruin such passion with broken landscape or missing airports or stutters on final approach?

Can you believe it’s been more than two months since the game’s release? Over two months. Put it in your brain. How much did they fix?

I know it was the holidays, blah blah. I just want to rant a little. Please hear me out. All I ask is that Heavy Cargo Missions be added to career mode as soon as possible, along with a couple of planes capable of handling the heavy lifting. Is this too much to ask? Please give me some airborne muscle! I’m overly concerned about the worst release in MSFS history; my true concern is that the game appears to be stuck in a constant state of “coming soon!” MSFS isn’t an MMO, so who gave them the go-ahead to release a game riddled with bugs and missing content that could have taken months to develop? It’s like serving a half-baked cake and expecting everyone to cheer! Not in this state, and especially not by charging people for four different versions as if it were a completed masterpiece! What a slap to the face…

It’s like ordering a gourmet meal and receiving a plate of soggy fries instead! I paid $200 for this Alpha, and what did I get? Buggy planes, randomly generated missions with completely ridiculous altitudes and in general that play hide and seek, daily disconnects, and a dev team that appears to be on perpetual vacation. What a treat! I’m not sure who thought it was a great idea to release this game right before Christmas in this state! All I can think of are some great zingers for that person/team! Is this an EA or a hidden plot twist in a video game? Microsoft must be running low on cash if they are now targeting flight simmers for a financial boost, right?

I want to see real results. Fixes and patches are completed more quickly. Otherwise, it is false advertising and an outright betrayal of the player base. People are frustrated and angry, regardless of whether they are fans or not. Asobo, get your stuff together! Please work with us, your customers, and release your plans and roadmap; we are worth at least that much, aren’t we? You charged us hundreds of dollars for an unfinished game. Can you be decent and honest with us now? We’d like to know what you plan to fix and when the most commonly used planes will be fixed. I’m primarily referring to Career mode here. Since you limit the planes we can use in career mode, you intend to fix those planes as soon as possible, don’t you? What about heavy cargo missions? The super-heavy missions, balancing the passive income, addressing the expensive planes absolutely worst return on investment? Your future ideas for career mode? Please be open with us. COMMUNICATE with us.

It’s been a day short of 7 weeks.

Alright, I know this is in the wishlist, but I still consider necessary to mention and discuss it.

When MSFS2024 was announced, it had very interesting content. Particularly what called my attention (and many others) were those missions. Rescue missions, firefighting missions, medevac missions, agricultural missions.

MSFS2024 released, and they’re completely unavailable outside career mode. Unfortunately, career mode is bearable if perhaps you work from home and have several hours per day. Nevertheless, for the rest of us who have obligations, like a normal office job, and we who are what could be called “weekend pilots” (as in normal life for whoever has a hobby), dedicating the required amount of time to career mode is impossible.

This renders all those so much announced missions, which were almost the main component of all the trailer videos, completely out of reach. We basically paid for like 70% of the game and we can’t use it.

As far as I remember, I never saw a single word about missions being unavailable outside a specific mode. This logic was not announced, and I think all of us realized when.. well, after some time. since launch was SO buggy -and still is, because there are day 1 bugs still untackled of course- that no one was certain if the reason of missions not being available was a bug or a planned “feature”.

We’re almost two months after release and:

  • Several important bugs are still untackled (EFB behaviour, ATC dumb indications, and now the traffic, that’s a new one, just naming three that I saw five minutes ago opening the sim).
  • CTDs are pretty common (just had one flying to St. Barths).
  • Things not working (reverse is a roulette on the Skycourier, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t).
  • Developers have updated their airplanes, but the marketplace is still as a whole a wishlist item. Pilot Experience updated their Maule, and it’s now in version 1.2.1, but on the marketplace it’s still on 1.2.0, unusable on MSFS2024. And talk about the rest

Let’s assume we all cope with that waiting for bug fixes and updates…

.. half of the sim is unavailable unless you have a lot of hours to dedicate to career mode, and you can’t fly a rescue mission or a fire fighting mission without resigning your job (non home office jobs of course) and flying.

Who thought about this? Seriously?

Meh, I can’t shake my head enough and I’ve facepalmed so many times that I’m about to leave a permanent mark.

Seb.

I don’t recall whether they announced it or not, however I certainly remember it being discussed - at length - in the community prior to release.

To me at least it was obvious the missions would not occur in the open world - imagine trying to shoot an ILS at the end of a long haul procedurally-correct flight while a constant stream of folk are hopelessly trying to hook a banner 10ft to the side of the active. Or thirty different people criss-crossing the same lake trying to scoop water while the entire horizon burns. Whole mountainsides strewn with injured walkers, and seas full of sinking ships - good luck finding yours

That makes no sense whatsoever.

Why would missions outside career mode have to affect live multiplayer? None of the existing ‘challenges’ do.

Start the sim, wait a long time, load an aircraft, choose a livery, choose a grassy patch at a nearby airport that you bought from the Marketplace, wait for it to load … aaaaand … the Asobo default miscreation of an airport loads.

Quit flight, add the airport via the Cloud again, and quit MSFS.

Start the sim, wait a long time, load an aircraft, choose a livery, choose a grassy patch at a nearby airport that you bought from the Marketplace, wait for it to load, remove pitot cover, chocks etc, go though a protracted start-up procedure … aaaaand … no engine sounds.

Quit the flight, shut down MSFS. Take a deep breath.

Start the sim, wait a long time, load an aircraft, choose a livery, choose a grassy patch at a nearby airport that you bought from the Marketplace, wait for it to load … aaaaand … the sim totally ignores any keyboard inputs. Cannot move around (but can rotate via mouse input, and remove covers within reach), cannot Escape to reload flight. And Control+Alt+Delete.

Go for a walk. :man_shrugging:

Absolute rubbish support from Devs.

Don’t launch a live service game without a team on standby across holidays.

The fact this game not only can’t deliver on Career mode for a week, but has insane bugs that make some planes and missions totally unplayable is amateur hour.

Fix your ■■■■.

Oh, interesting ! That would explain why I rarely get the Low Bandwidth Warning anymore, I suppose.

Or go back to MSFS2020 :upside_down_face:

Month 2 after release and still so many issues … unbelievable!

THAT is a laugh riot, whether intended or not. Thank you! We can all use some of that.

I also believe that in the end we’ll have an great product. I need to slow down on reporting bugs and posting Wish List items, and wake up to the fact that MSFS/Asobo have gone a long, long way in creating a simulated world! Despite the problems, I’ve never considered wanting my money back because deep down MSFS (and partners) through the years have created simulations that I’ve gotten lost in (emersion). In fact I still enjoy flying every day and work around the problems. Each version becomes more and more realistic. So I’m behind Jorg and every person involved with 2024. I offer a great thank you to them and will exercise patience while they continue creating our virtual world.

I agree, not that I’m in same situation, but, that’s quote of the year in 2024 for sure. I apply that same action to lots of daily flubs. I’m still gigggling  good one

Keep up. It’s 2025 in case you hadn’t noticed haha.

That is an interesting and positive perspective. I too am extremely grateful that brilliant and talented people, who can create amazing software, have done so and given me years of enjoyment.

That being said, I also believe strongly is honest communication and honest advertising. There is no way that these serious bugs (not server related as they originally might have been) could have gone undetected by anyone testing the sim before release. There is no way this big team, anticipating the release, could have not tested it, flown flights in several planes, and not seen these major issues. So, admitting that it is still in Beta would have been honest and would have given users a choice before taking their money. Many of us would have been OK with a glitchy product and many, like me (after reading the posts here) would have waited and stayed with 2020. Maybe a big apology, admitting that their was some pressure from higher up to get this thing released?

I do believe it will be fixed but it is the deception (like I said, they HAD To have seen many of the major issues) that is very irritating.

First impressions after playing MSFS 2024 for 14.5 hrs (MSFS 40th Ed. 17.9 hrs).

First of all, I have bought MSFS 2024 because of the story/missions mode. My hope was, that the “flight school” was significantly improved compared to 40th Ed. I am in a mood, where I want to enjoy the game and I don’t mind such a things as loading screens (am I too old? :D), I don’t mind “people” clipping through things, procedurally generated nonsense etc.

I am in for the “role play”, the content - the training missions. And for the first 10 hours, I was completely satisfied. However, my excitement (for the content) completely fell apart after the first two certifications.

I am still granting the MSFS the benefit of the doubt, that the whole certification component isn’t just a busywork, hence this post.

So, now after the introduction, what bothers me can be summarised by “I don’t like, when the lecture ends with A, but in my mind I failed.”

The perfect example is the whole IFR training set. I don’t think, that the instruments are explained - AT ALL. For example, the ILS. I was really disappointed, when I’ve heard the announcement, that “the frequency was already set for me.” How am I ready to be “role play certified” to “use ILS” when I don’t even know where to find it, how to set it to the computer? (Let’s ignore the fact that I have preexisting knowledge of what the ILS is.)

I have looked at various Youtube videos, to satisfy my curiosity (to explain things left out), but I think this is really something that should be part of the baseline experience. I have been reading the mission briefs too, but I don’t think those provide anything of value.

I think that a little effort put in the content could make a huge improvement. Embed images to the mission brief and expand it. Describe the produces in more detail and “if something is done for you before the mission,” describe the process. I don’t think, this is an unreasonable request.
Would I prefer videos? Cutscenes? This being the part of the mission? Sure!

I have to say, at this stage, the whole certification process seems, like it was done “as a busywork for a person who already knows” which I believe was not the original intention.
If I’m incorrect shame on me, because (what I’ve considered to be) the marketing pitch worked and I’ve spent 80 EUR for something which isn’t there.

Saying all of that, I’m not abandoning the game and will still play it. I really loved the first 10 hours, doing go-around felt like “wow, you’re going to let me do that?”, using checklists to setup the plane switch it off. But somehow, I’ve had to “search for the checklists” myself  You have put the work into creating all the UI and the content and I have found out by accident.

Anyway, I’m starting to ramble too much.
