That’s why I will never buy Q3 or any other headset that requires fast wifi to work. My home network is all ethernet (when possible), I don’t want to buy another router that may work with Q3 or may not. I read too many posts about Q3 stopped connecting to 6e router after one of the firmware updates for Q3.
Even with the original one a good sweet-spot. I had some of those customized gaskets, and my favourite is the original with a silicon gasket, more comfortable and more hygienic-cleanable, and then I did some holes with a drill by my own, up and down of the gasket to refresh more the face and the HMD, and it is noticeable the comfort and not steam-sweat even in hot conditions, ofc less where the face contacts with the silicon that I clean after each use, and 0 more noticeable light inside.
Augmented Reality is very hard to do (I’m assuming that’s what WMR is, please correct me)
AR needs to scan the physical world around you and overlay the virtual image, so the two are seamless.
I’m not surprised then binned it, because it requires expensive professional equipment.
I’ve seen prototype AR in the CAD/CAM company I worked for. Very clever but the gear was not good enough 5 years ago, and it isn’t cheap mainstream games stuff.

Yeh that’s fair enough. The added complication of having to extend the network for cordless can be a put off. When I RMA my Crystal, I just spent the proceeds on the Q3 so that allowed me to get a very high quality 6e router. There are many routers that don’t work with virtual desktop and they have a list of those on their discord. I tried airlink and it was a catastrophe. I like reading all the advice and watching reviews, but I still just buy everything on Amazon so I can send it back. The Q3 was allowed to stay
It’s the windows software that connects some headsets to the computer. Maybe it does AR but the headset everyone owns that uses WMR is the G2 and it will be rendered useless when they deprecate it
Q3 does AR and it isn’t expensive.
I really think there must have been something wrong with my G2. I never got the tracking to work properly, despite doing everything short of a voodoo sacrifice. I mean……I assume it was the tracking. I would look to one side and a lot of the time it would sort of skip a few frames. It seriously became a full time job trying to get it to work because I could see the amazing potential of VR in MSFS. It was quite a heartbreaking journey. And then for the Crystal to have this weird occlusion problem, I was pretty close to giving up. Maybe that’s why I love my Q3 so much. I am just cruising around in my 737, my Beechraft 18, my F-111 and it is bloody glorious!!!
As I wrote above, frankly I think you gave up on the G2 too soon. It works well now, but you no longer have it and cannot compare.
I’ve had the G2 since launch and never experienced any major tracking problems with it. Still on the original cable and my only real issue is the audio occasionally cutting out due to what appears to be bad connections. Still happy with it overall despite being envious reading about the Q3’s much improved clarity across the whole image.
Pretty disillusioned with the current state of VR hardware to be honest. It’s going on for four years since the G2 was released and I would have hoped by now that there’d be generationally better headsets at a similar price. A genuine upgrade is more than double the cost which doesn’t feel like good value to me.
Head tracking is the worst part of G2. It does not work well with low light environment and even with good light the camera center point likes to drift over time. It’s not a big deal in MSFS but in combat sims where you are constantly moving head to check your 6 and look for enemies it’s really annoying. I need to recenter VR view every few minutes. My old Rift CV1 had much better tracking.
WMR is a set of drivers for both Mixed Reality devices (Hololens) and ordinary Virtual Reality devices (Reverb G2).
I never experienced any tracking issues with my G2. Any why should you keep your room darkened if you are in VR - you can’t see the room anyway, so keep the lights on.
Those issues exists and are wide-spread. One of them is a known issue with Windows 11 that causes jitter with the G2. I experienced it as well and had to use motion smoothing in OpenXR to ameliorate it.
Because someone tries to sleep while I am playing.
That does sound horrible and frustrating. I ran the G2 for a couple of years (on Windows 10) and never experienced anything like this. It definitely wasn’t perfect but for its time it was the #1 choice for sims in that price class IMO
I’d much prefer to have the lights dark or off if possible. I sometimes use the nose gap to see my illuminated keyboard and panels but find the otherwise bright room distracting.
My previous headsets were Vives so the G2 is my only experience of inside-out tracking. I just assumed all headsets of this type needed a decent amount of light to track reliably.
I feel like a year of struggling with it pretty much every day isn’t “giving up on it too soon”.
From what I’ve read it plays nicer with win 10.
Try a workaround - cover 2 of 4 tracking cameras. Known Windows 11 issue with WMR/G2.
If you have a device which depends on visible light cameras for tracking you can’t expect it to work in darkness.
By ‘off if possible’ I was referring to headsets which didn’t use visible light. Despite the extra hardware I much preferred the Vive’s tracking for that reason. For seated VR use it’s still the better system in my opinion.
