My feelings exactly. It says a lot about how things are going, or rather haven’t gone that decent relatively affordable VR just isn’t really a thing in 2024. There’s a such a big discrepancy between people who are evangelical about VR and the fact that so few people use it. PC VR is just not an affordable or easy experience to have.

Things for me might change if FS2024 is super well optimised for VR and that budget Pimax headset turns out to be any good. I’m not holding my breath though.

I would disagree. Quest 3 is affordable, has great quality, and works flawlesly for me compared to the HP G2 (using VD). Plus you can use it standalone for more casual games, watching YouTube while laying in bed or whatever…

I mentioned the Q3’s image quality in a previous post, but the resolution is still practically identical to the G2. That’s not much progress considering the price is fairly similar.

Keep reading about the need for a dedicated router as well. Quite a significant caveat to ‘works flawlessly’.

I don’t have a dedicated router. Just a good quality one I also use for other devices.

The huge difference (fundamental in my opinion) is that it’s clear edge to edge, not just a small spot in the middle. This made the G2 basically unusable for me. I don’t want to move my head to look at gauges. With the quest 3 I can look at the horizon and just gaze down at the gauges without moving my head. Impossible in the G2.

Sorry, maybe I did not express myself well. I didn’t mean to say that a year of hassle is acceptable, it has been a big hassle for everyone. I meant to say that whatever viewer you had, it worked poorly at that time. Probably the G2 is the first one that started working well after several updates, since the developers had stated that MSFS would be optimized for the G2. That’s why I think if you had waited to adopt a new visor now you would have a different opinion.

The Quest 3 is certainly great value for money and its very versatile, but its not a dedicated PC headset and its not a huge leap forward from the Quest 2. I totally get that its pretty much the only option at the moment for people who don’t have huge amounts of money but thats kind of the point. In 2024 there really isn’t much option and back when the G2 launched I think a lot of us thought this was the start of something big, new headsets would be hitting the market from all angles, the tech would move very quickly forward, and become more affordable with it.

I disagree. The lenses are a huge leap forward from the Q2.

Which is why I never upgraded :sweat_smile: still haven’t with the Aero, though I will sooner or later. Putting it of cos I’m too lazy to do a full reinstall, but that’s really what one should do in this situation.

PC VR is still relatively cheaper than Apple Vision Pro. They announced recently the amazing addition of a Solitaire game for it.

What’s not good is that it all feels like the technology is just experimental, with WMR portal, various addons, etc.

Since I upgraded to the latest FS the VR with Reverb G2 is better in image quality to what I remember but it’s just so fickle. If I can get a 1 hour flight done with no CTD I’m amazed.

Add to that the need to have a monstrously powerful computer to run it, another gripe.

It almost seems like VR headsets need their own dedicated GPU capabilities that run just the VR and not shared with the rest of the OS, hopefully providing better performance.

Can you imagine the size of the headset and additional power requirements if that were the case? Try strapping a 4090 to your head. Lol

The OS barely uses any GPU resources, it wouldnt make the slightest difference.

In a separate box that the cable connects to.

The idea would be to have everything that is necessary to run/support the VR headset completely within whatever that box is. Maybe that brings more reliability?

The talk of head tracking not being very good is never a problem with my G2 - maybe it’s because I have a couple of very bright screens in front of me and a desk lamp.

I certainly don’t miss that jitter! Ugh, I tried QR codes, covering cameras, taking OXRTK to 100% reduction.

While the Pimax Crystal can suddenly decide it isn’t going to cooperate for a day or two, the tracking is so smooth and precise. It makes reading the Barometer on the analog altimeters as easy as it is on a real airplane (which still isn’t easy to see).

I got the Lighthouse kit but haven’t felt the need to hook it up yet.

What is your CPU and GPU?

Since upgrading to a RTX 4090, VR has been very stable. I think that would be the case no matter the headset.

But I also noticed improved sim stability moving from WMR to Pimax. With WMR I had to make sure it was running before the sim and going in and out of VR could also cause problems.

I think WMR was too deeply hooked to the OS.

I’m fairly sure it’s GPU driver related. In 2D never an issue even running at 5120x2880 resolution.

I have discovered that not connecting the Reverb G2 to the ports on the GPU (instead to normal USB-C) helps a lot. Much more stable.

There was a topic here from someone else about it. All it took was to find that topic, change where the VR headset was connected and immediately better.

Of all the solutions that’s the one I least expected.

I’ve been tempted to put in a RTX4090 as a windows only second GPU. I could either put it in EGPU enclosure or internal.

The Radeon is still necessary to drive the 5K displays (via thunderbolt), I couldn’t give those up. :wink:

Yep, me too. Quest 2 before it. I mean “affordable” is relative, but anyone much into flight sims probably can afford it.

What do you mean by “dedicated router?” As in, you need one? Sure. I have a lot of things using my router at any given time and I’ve never noticed any difference when I use my Quest 3 no matter what’s going on.

It would be nice to get some support from Jorg Neumann within Microsoft NOT to shutdown WMR. But perhaps he can do nothing about it. The HP Reverb G2 was the recommended Headset for MSFS a few years ago! Now having it bricked soon is not very resource friendly. I had the same situation once with a logitech force feedback joystick which did not get any more SW support. So i had to throw it away mechanically fully functioning. What a shame.

It’s actually kind of funny how this came to be. Microsoft was counting on WMR to funnel people into their game lineup and Game Pass. A friend with his ear to the rail said a whole bunch of people bought WMR headsets and then used them with rival Steam. MS wasn’t happy.

I’ve got a G2. Actually 2 of them. It’s very unfortunate Microsoft is bailing on WMR. It’s actually a pretty good system and has been very reliable and enjoyable all the time I’ve had it.

Whatever the reason behind abandoning it, they threw away a product line just as it was hitting its stride. And of course manufacturers would abandon products with Microsoft abandoning support. What MS effectively did was discourage other headset efforts during the WMR run and now they are leaving a big hole. They caused damage to the VR market IMO.

But there’s a few other headsets still coming to market besides the Meta ones and with higher resolution and other features. We should have more alternatives coming but the way Microsoft handled this is probably a big reason we don’t have more VR headsets about to hit. Manufacturers need a stable platform to build hardware for. I can’t think of a better way to undermine an extraordinary product.

The Quest 3 is an all around better HMD than the Reverb G2 IMO.
WMR tracking has always been subpar and the wonky, WMR firmware and Windows KB updates never saw eye to eye exactly. Samsung made the better quality HMDs under the WMR umbrella but chose to exit and pursue other ventures. Not sure what folks are holding on to with WMR, it’s certainly beyond our control and going the way of Nvidia’s 3D Vision…EXTINCT! My next HMD will certainly be a simple SteamVR based one. The only thing I’ll miss about the WMR Portal is the cool WMR Loft/Cliffhouse environment functionality.

While still not quite a Pimax fan and the Somnium VR1 just seems too good to be true, and not quite sure of the Somnium VR developers business practices concerning the whole obsession with crypto marketing. I get it, in 2024 no one really cares to make a VR HMD based purely on the spirit of “Power PC User Culture and Enthusiasm” companies need a huge investment return in such a niche market.

Assuming you don’t get hit by the battery saver bug. It’s been a fine headset for me, but that has become a prevalent bug (which I’m also impacted by).
