Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality WMR

,

@Mooncatt3953 You shouldn’t still be impacted by that battery saver bug since the latest v65 update. If, after doing a factory reset you still have this then you should contact Meta support and start a ticket. No problem with mine btw.

Just my opinion but I think that curently the most logical replacement for the G2/WMR with msfs2020 is the new Pimax Crystal light (probably the local dimming version).

However, I think you probably should still stick it out with your G2/WMR until it stops working. By then, many other headsets may be available to choose between.

Yes, i will run it as long as it works. But i hoped to be able to use it a lot longer, because the “driver” was made by Microsoft. My Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel from around 2004? still works with Win10! So this soon deprecation is a real bad behaviour from a company which had a much better longevity of hardware in the last years. This is not resource friendly to throw away working hardware. Wasting CO2 seems not to be relevant to MS.

WMR will continue working in Windows 10, and also in Windows 11 if you decide to not update it to 24H2.

Yes, but this is not a solution because end of 2025 you get no security updates any more on Win10 and Win11/23H2.

How can these companies call themselves Green? If we are filling landfills because they make our equipment obsolete before it really is?

This is a perfect excuse for buying the Pimax Crystal light. I’m on the same boat. Maybe the prize drops a little bit and bugs get ironed out until fall.

1. DENIAL: There’s no way Microsoft kills WMR and with it my Reverb G2!

2. ANGER: How dare they?! Why is this allowed?? ****! ****! ****!!
3. BARGAINING: Hey, this means unnecessary CO2 emissions and wasted landfill space. Surely a EU court will make MS keep WMR alive until we decide the G2 is really obsolete, right? Right?? Come on!
4. DEPRESSION: Gently cleaning the G2 lenses and crying to "Let It Be" playing on its wonderful speakers.

According to who? There hasn’t been an official announcement on their forum thread of a fix. There was one person yesterday that said V66 has improved things but not completely resolved the issue, and that’s the only feedback I’ve seen of it. I know it wasn’t working for me on v65, nor for most other people, and factory resetting is not effective.

hello everybody

i have an reverb G2 and yesterday it worked verywell but today when i launch the vr i have a massage that said : vr failled to start verify tou have installed OPEN XR and your virtual headset supported. i have download and install open XR and it work but the vr don’t start. could yoiu help me? i don’t know what i will make thanks for your help.

Honestly that meta user thread isn’t very useful since its mainly filled up by the same couple of users, lol! Seems to me that the main effect for those silly enough to select the quest home battery saver mode is that it automaticlally reduces brightness, even after disabling it. Even you said in another thread that you just needed to increase the brightness in the quest quick settings tab.

Also seems to mainly be a passthrough thing and Q3 passthrough has always been pretty subjective imho because it also depends a lot on your room lighting. For me, passthrough quality has improved a lot since v64/65.

In any case, this should not effect PCVR. The only exception is that your brightness/contrast settings do tend to carry over so you may need to go back and reset those. I’ve always found it best to go into one of the darkish quest home environments like Thrones an adjust brightness and contrast sliders to give you the best balance.

Anyway, kinda off topic so I’ll sign off this thread now. If you want to discuss this further I suggest you go to the relevent thread you have already contributed to.

In any case, I hope you find a solution for any of your issues soon. Bye and cheers.

There are probably better threads to get an answer to this question.

Please do not take what I said out of context. In that other thread, I did mention the brightness, yes, but I also mentioned no resolution change, and that (either that same post or another in that thread) there is no difference in quality between lower and Godlike quality settings via Virtual Desktop. Point being, yes I am affected by the bug, and the brightness comment was only related to being able to increase it again. That’s is not the main difference you imply that I agree with.

And you do realize that bug is affecting many people right from the start, and not just the ones that purposely tried it that you are now insulting, right?

Now that I’ve corrected the facts, sure.

Sorry but I don’t suffer gladly those that think that any other’s opinions are insulting, and/or not valid. If you want to discuss this further, I suggest you PM me. I def will not add anymore off topic posts to this thread.

I’ve already recommended considering a dedicated DP wired PCVR headset like the new Crystal Light with local dimming as an upgrade to a G2 for msfs2020 and, even as a Q3/Qpro user, I stand by that. I also still use a Vive Pro1 (Etsy GearVR lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and Index controllers) so I do know the difference.

I actually started off my PCVR journey with a Dell WMR headset +6 years ago and I really didn’t like the WMR experience. So, I’m not too sorry to see WMR heading off into the sunset, lol!

Reminder to all, please remain on topic and refrain from derailing the thread.

This thread really has developed. And so have I! At the start of it I was a G2 owner annoyed about WMR news. Now it is fully in the rear view. The Q3 is not perfect but it’s so easy and the pancake lenses are brilliant. Hopefully a future Quest will come out with DP. Until then I really recommend Q3 as an affordable platform that just works so you can focus on just flying!

Think of it as a new pair of classes. Do you wear an old pair just to save resources when the new ones are better because they fit your eyes better? Not a perfect anaology I know, but the newer headsets will look MUCH better.

You are right and it would be a nice upgrade but then i would perhaps also need a 4090. As far as i have seen the Pimax supports only doubling the framerate by interpolation whereas the WMR allows up to 3-4x the fps by motion interpolation. That is an enormous disadvantage for the pimax. Normally i lock to max. 30fps and triple it with interpolation to 90.

Now that Microsoft is discontinuing WMR, it would be great if Microsoft released the code/algorithms of their MR implementation as FOSS!

Are any G2 Reverb users running a current version of Windows 11 still able to fly in VR? WMR all of a sudden won’t recognize my USB3 anymore.

Yes mine still works. I am on windows 11 Pro 23H2 22631.3737
