Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality WMR

,

If you want Plug 'n Play, the Beyond is a much better choice.

There’s clearly people on this forum who say it does exist but my reaction to that is - lucky them! Its certainly never been my experience and judging by the popularity of various youtube channels run by people who almost making a living from making tutorials of how to get VR working well in the sim its also not the experience of many others.

See what FS2024 brings. If there has been a lot of optimisation done in the sim them maybe it’ll work a lot better and VR investment will be worthwhile for you. Also bare in mind VR just might not be for you. Even when my G2 is working well I still prefer flight simming in 2D. Its just the way I like to enjoy them sim. There’s an immersive Wow! factor with VR for sure but it may or may not ware off for you. It certainly did with me, and the technical problems have never helped.

I’m listening … where can I get more info on the setup etc.?? It seems the Pimax might be a pinch better with visuals but the Bigscreen looks overall a better fit for me. I am a resolution guy and it looks like Bigscreen will need more extras ??

In my experience, VR is not a popular option for those who mainly fly long haul flights in the tube liner aircraft–those who enjoy the intricate details of advanced cockpit systems management. VR is mostly a favorite with bush pilots and those who prefer flying VFR–those who love the feeling of flight over and through realistic terrain.
Which kind of pilot you are will tell you a lot about whether the VR hassle is worth it for you.

I didn’t find VR worth it for manual GA VFR flying either when I tried it in 2021. Way too fiddly, with terrible nausea-inducing failure modes when the buggy, poorly-performing sim would stutter, and on top of that all the negatives of dealing with a monitor strapped to your face blocking out the world around you. My old Valve Index has been gathering dust for two years.

It’s a really cool tech demo, though, and I hope one day things will be smoothly & consistently performing, controls will be sensible, and headsets will be both lightweight and allow for clean visibility of the real world when you need it.

Maybe in 2024 or 2025 I’ll pick up a new headset and try again. We’ll see.

Losing WMR in Windows itself sounds bad but it’s not needed except for the few sets that specifically used its drivers – what’s worrying if you want good VR is that Microsoft is unlikely to invest money in having Asobo invest developer time into making things work smoothly because they only cared about VR to the extent that it was popular with the money people for a few years.

Must the tenor of your communications be so hysterical?

Hearing that Microsoft is removing support from windows. How this will effect vr in the flight simulator.

We can only guess WMR will be not available in future Windows version in a couple of years and WMR-based headsets will not work with this future Windows version. Most known example of WMR headset Is HP Reverb G2.
WMR has zero impact on the other headsets (like Pimax, Big Screen Beyond, Varjo, Quest, Pico) and on the VR support in MSFS as such.

I am currently using WMR for VR in MSFS and I really happy with it. For that reason, I have the MS-Store version of MSFS and all my add-ons have been purchased in the MS-Store version of MSFS.

I really want VR in FS2024, but the removal of WMR probably means that I will have to purchase the Steam version of FS2024 when it comes out… and then purchase all my add-ons again as add-ons do not transfer between MS-Store and Steam versions!

No, you do not have to do that. The WMR layer in Windows has nothing to do with MSFS. It is only required by certain headsets, i.e. HP Reverb G2.

There is no difference in functionality between Steam and MS Store versions of MSFS for the PC. It is just different sales/distribution channel.

Hi,

There really is no need to panic at all.

Thanks

The 16 million users of meta quests will appreciate…
It is precisely because Meta released a headset that is twice as expensive and does double the amount that Microsoft is dropping (you just have to compare headset sales to understand what people are interested in…), it cannot fight against this, only apple will try to fight against meta and again it moves towards luxury… (easy all the work of clearing was carried out almost by meta, there is more than that put an apple as a logo on it, a little gloss and charge 2000 euros more…).

Also if you have doubts, try a quest 2, you will see, I run with it at almost ultra 70 fps on my PC without any problems (and with VD of course).

No need to worry – MSFS 2020 uses OpenXR in both MS Store and Steam versions and supports the same set of headsets. There’s no reason to believe MSFS 2024 will be different.

WMR is only relevant to headsets that had drivers using the WMR layer, and apps (not MSFS) that specifically used WMR drivers.

So, pardon my ignorance here but let’s say Windows 12 releases, sans WMR. Will FS2024 work with the Reverb G2 and Open XR or are us G2 users bound to Windows 11?

Currently, it appears that Reverb G2 users will be out of luck in your scenario.

In that scenario, Windows 12 users would not be able to use their Reverb G2 with either MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024.

For Windows 11 users, in 2027 (IIRC as stated in the microsoft document linked way up above somewhere) you may start having problems even if you stay on Windows 11 because individual components, as well probably as the operating system itself, will be out of support.

RIP the G2. She is a troubled beast, but I still think it’s a solid headset, as long as you can put in 78,000 hours getting it to work correctly. It took me all of 2023 to get it to where I would consider it acceptable. So much hustling and problem solving to get a decent result. A year later I’m still going. Tomorrow I am putting in a physical fTPM module so that I can turn off the fTPM software as I heard that it can interfere with fragile USB data such as that from the headset tracking cable from the G2. Witchcraft! I did have a nice flight over the south of France tonight in my comforting friend, the 172, with beautifully smooth VR. It’s lovely when it works.

After all these years, the VR experience was still buggy? Also, it seems the only way to continue the VR/MR experience is to get an Xbox, game pass ultimate, and download the cloud gaming app from the quest’s App Library. Not the same but a workaround unfortunately…

You know that’s a 2d screen displayed in 3d space, right?
