Why are a number of airports not selectable for career mode starting points? For example there are large flight schools at KBED and KOWD but neither shows up on the map or allows selection as a home airport?

Unfortunately, no. It seems like their “you can’t use this” criterion is somewhat overly broad. And based on past experience, It’s probably not something that they’ll change.
It really just a starting location rather than a home base. All the airports are functionally the same for career mode, and the aircraft you purchase through a company can be deployed anywhere you want as long as you have discovered it.
I got to understand that it only allows you to pick very small airports, but it’s not clear at all when you start. I also got the feeling I had to pick a “home base”
Yeah Im extremely disappointed that I cannot pick KAPA for my starting point, but for some stupid reason, I can pick Buckley AIR FORCE BASE…
