MK Studio's Dublin airport update is going to cost current owners...?

Just read that dublin airport has been updated with the new runway, not only that… but effectively going to be a totally new product and offered to current owners at a fee… effectively 30% off…

Is that right? Does that sit well with anyone here???

If I’m going to start getting emails from the various 100s I spent on airports, developers asking for money because a minor update has effectively made them “redevelop” an airport and ask you to pay for it… that is not right is it…

I had this happen frequently with FSX airports (I cant think of any with MSFS yet)…It didnt bother much then depending on the amount of changes - so for me its something I have seen before. Curious tho how this is going to work in the MSFS store (where I bought V1 of this airport) - I assume if they are going to have in the store there will be a V2 but will they remove V1?

Surely a second runway cpuld have been done inline with V1…

But I mean… MSFS was the first place I bought products online but every single product I have, provides free updates…

If a lot of work was involved, enough to make it effectively a new ‘major’ version, I don’t see that pushing it as a new product with an upgrade deal is unreasonable. It just depends.

For example, ORBX has an EGLC which is very out of date since the airport in RL now has an additional apron over what was water, a new taxiway, different parking, a new control tower etc. I wouldn’t expect to get a completely remodelled airport for free because it would be a lot of work to extend the airport and fully test it and someone has to pay for it or else it just won’t happen. In fact, I think the reason a lot of existing products don’t get updates is exactly because the developers can’t afford the development cost for an update that will be free to existing customers vs spending their time on a new product that they can sell.

Charging for a minor update is a different matter. I wouldn’t expect to pay for 1.0 → 1.1 unless it was made clear when I bought it that all updates are paid-for. I don’t see many if any developers doing that.

And as pointed out, if it’s on the Marketplace the only way to charge for an upgrade is to make it a new product altogether.

If i’d bought it, my reaction to the OP might depend on the date of the initial release, relative to the introduction of the “new runway”.

For example, if the new runway was already in place when the initial release happened, then i’d have a higher expectation that the original would be a true representation of the airport at that point in time and wouldn’t expect to pay any more.

However, if on the other hand, the new runway came into service after the initial release, then depending upon the extra work needed by the dev to code it, which might not be insignificant, i might be more willing to contribute to the cost of their work.

In a way though… MK studios did have the runway 3/4 built to showcase the progress… you could say it should have been available in a minor update the day it came out then charge for the complete update

A simple cucumber costs more than 3€ im Germany at the moment… why? Because people pay it.

They tried the same with butter before but found that the typical german gives a s… and just bought cheaper oleo. So the price for butter is back down where it belongs.

As long as you pay they will ask you to pay.

On the other side, if you don‘t pay you will likely not get the update.

Give and take and flightsim has always been an expensive PC hobby.

First, its a new product, remade in big parts, not just a “bug fix”.
Second, u get 30% discount as V1 customer.
Third, in ORBX theres a bundle price for the Airport + Dublin City landmarks.

I wasnt a v1 customer and got the v2 airport + the landmarks for 20bucks. Really fair price.
Nothing wrong with paying again for such a big upgrade.

I purchased the original version 1 and now have the upgrade offered for £11.39. As v1 is unusable I feel that if I want to use EIDW again I’ve got to pay the upgrade.
I’ve decided to do this but at the same time put MK studios on my blacklist and not make any further purchases from them.

I guess so now it’s buy an airport, but now there will be different versions from the original airport at an extra cost . Ridiculous.

I’m in two minds about this. At first I felt it should be a free upgrade, but if you look at what they’ve done you might realise they basically rebuilt the whole thing. It’s way more that just slapping an extra runway on there. And it looks great. So I can understand they’re not offering it for free.

On the other hand, I think 30% discount for existing customers is a bit meagre, I feel maybe a more generous 50% off would feel a bit better …

I have version one. Large scale upgrades of Heathrow, Vienna, Burbank from three separate reputable developers have looked after their loyal customers with free upgrades.
Dublin is setting a precedent for developers to release outdated or in some cases sub par work only to profiteer by charging for updates and upgrades.

It’s a false economy as simmers know which developers to trust and who to avoid like a plague.
This “business” model might have worked with a lower price point to match drip feeding scenery, but not at the original price of Dublin.

I for one am offended by this dodgy practice and won’t be funding and therefore encouraging this bad practice anymore. Obviously this is only my personal opinion and the way I shop.

I bought it on Orbx tonight without discount as my original was from marketplace and who knows when it makes a release there of if any discount will be available. I think it was the very first airport I bought in MSFS. I was quite frustrated that it took so long to get 28R “enabled” (perhaps they could have released it in a smaller update in V1.x sooner). Nothing like having an airac that has 28R but it’s missing physically!
The V2 upgrade is nice with some interiors now covered. Not all interiors are though. Some buildings are about the same (empty interiors) as V1. The not so new runway 28R is there now though, which is nice. Departed from it earlier…
Having said all that V2 has not “blown me away” entirely, as the original wasn’t that bad minus interiors. It just didn’t have 28R.
I think I’m also spoiled with some other devs recent releases.

Some terminals / gates are quite detailed. Many still look like they arent. There are still a lot of buildings with no interiors whatsoever, which is fine, but a many recent releases from other devs have gone much further in this regard.

For example : Terminal 2 has some very detailed gates but the main terminal building /check in/entrance is a completely empty shell.

You could have contacted MK Studios, they offer 30% vouchers if you send proof of purchase for marketplace customers.

EIDW V2 screen grab examples -

Main Gates 407-426 at T2 (nice & very detailed)

.
Main Entrance building to T2 (horrible empty shell)

.
T2 Gates 407-426 (nice new exterior)

.
Gates 301-313 (exterior, upgraded? I don’t see much upgraded here)

.
Gates 301-313 (interior, empty shell, no upgrade)

.
Make your own mind up how much detail you are expecting and where. detail certainly isn’t everywhere or at every gate / terminal building in V2.

I’m still happy to have bought EIDW V2 as I’ve been waiting ages for it to release.

Good to know thanks, trouble is with marketplace purchases there is no proof you bough an airport or anything for that matter, just a receipt for flightsim credits! That really annoys me. I prefer a proof of purchase.

This is indeed a contentious issue. Upon reflection I can see all the extra work they’ve put into the development of v2 and yes that amount of work can’t be undertaken gratis.
However all I really wanted was for 28R to be added and the associated taxiways which would have required much less time and effort. It also would have made the airport usable again much more quickly.
I feel that a meagre 30% discount in this case is way out of order and should have been at least 50% or even 60%.
They are definitely in my naughty book. Rant over.

Well…

I decided to buy it… seems silly having a airport with 3/4 of the 2nd runway built… although there is a real good freeware mod that someone developed with all the parkings and taxiways as well as the 2nd runway…

I can imagine it might be okay if a developer did a complete revamp of a airport, if that airport had a complete revamp…

But a second runway and interior… I feel that the second runway considering their original had the runway as a construction site… I cant really give two… spare thoughts on interior…

I just hope this doesn’t become the new norm… Where developers release a product then to a arguably a “minor” but crucial update… “second runway” and charge 70%…

Orbx did this with Hollywood Burbank over a year ago there was a huge outcry and ther developer relented i agree with you if this kind of thing is allowed to continue then we WILL be paying for upgrades
