Hello and thank you for msfs. Over the years modding sounds in fsx has been a very easy and delightful hobby for many. I seem to detect a much more hidden and protected approach for the gamefiles in msfs. Are there any plans of opening up and make modding easy again for msfs too at some point in time?
Regards
Yes there are plans, they’re still working on the SDK. More will become available when the SDK gets more fleshed out. I think it gets an update every 2 weeks.
Premium/deluxe content will still be encrypted. Otherwise modded versions of these planes / airports will soon be available for free from the modding sites.
It’s really frustrating to see so few original aircraft add-ons 3 months in, due to this unfinished SDK…
The numerous scenery mods out there right now feel like dessert . We are badly missing the main course…
The new sim hasn’t even been released half a year…
Great mods didn’t happen for FSX until years after its 2006 release.
So, those generalized complaints with no information are nice, but the OP specifically asked about modding the sounds. And as far as closed vs open, I’ve never seen a more open system other than X-Plane which is about as open as this is (and probably why Microsoft allowed it to be so).
Yes, the sounds are modifiable, and I think at least the start of the process of how to build a sound was recently added to the SDK. But, even so, the process they are using is defined and can be googled generally.
The “FS2020” system is based on Wwise sound development tools, but you can also use FSX wav system or even a hybrid approach.
There’s a nice description of it here How to replace sounds?
