Moffett Field Hanger One Completed. Time To Do The Airport Right Folks

Okay scenery designers Moffett Field Hanger One is finally complete after years of rebuilding it. Moffett Field (KNUQ), Silicon Valley and the greater SFO Bay Area needs its hanger again at the south end of the bay. Get working! :wink:

Whaou. I love the idea and thanks for the headup. I’m real rookie in Blender () but can help for the overall airport design.

Do you know if there’re other material (3D View, size…) useful for the hangar itself (I may improve my Blender skill afterall) and for the rest of the airport ?

On Facebook there’s a group called Moffett Field you can join. Beyond that do an internet search. The airport also has a very large wind tunnel. Moffett is where NASA Ames Research Center is located. There’s also a large hanger on the other side of the runways called Hanger Two. There used to be a twin to Two (Hanger Three) right next to Two but they tore it down last year. I used to work in the tower there decades ago when it was a Navy Base for P3’s and NASA experimental aircraft as well as a couple U2’s (later ER2’s).

BTW, as coincidence would have it I think I approached you about doing Columbia, CA airport (O22) a while back.

In FS9, I believe it was Hangar Two that was there as stock scenery with the ends open so that you could fly through. There was a third-party freeware addon to restore Hangar One.

Of course, if you really want to do it right, make it so that there’s a light rain inside the hangar on humid mornings. The hangar actually has its own microclimate and can form clouds near the roof and produce rain from condensation!

Which begs the question as to why Google want to store their planes inside it :thinking:. High humidity is not ideal for aircraft.

There’s also an airship that flies out of NUQ. The reason the hanger was originally built.

Usually they kept the southside doors open.

Nice to see Hangar One finally skinned again. I lived in the North Whisman neighborhood of Mountain View for 17 years. That building was an amazing backdrop to have, and I was sad when it was just a frame for so long.

Thanks for the info… I’ve had a closer look at the infrastructure and the related buildings that should be recreated and it’s a huge platform with a lot of specific hangars and setup. Not to mention the specific and iconic planes that should stand at apron. It’s way too big and complex for my skill.

Hope these come back. Circa 1985 I did flight simulator work there with the safety officer using the P3 simulators. The sim flew a camera along a basketball size recreation of Mountain View with the runways etc… somebody had put a large spider doll off the approach end of the runway… I think this all was in Hanger 1…

Computer science jocks may get a kick out of the quantification of the simulator what 40 years ago! Also unlikely that hangovers do your flying any good….. bottoms up?

Well, the tower is prominently displayed in MSFS 2024. I am primarily doing IFR flights trying to master the 787 autopilot so I fly a lot of short hops in California especially from Moffett to SFO. The other day I looked around and I wonder if they left the pad for I guess it was old Hanger 1 in there.

We did many studies over about 25 years on flight simulation and various drug effects and finally the effects of aging on performance. In this link I have videos of the old simulator that used Silicon Graphics processors (I did all the coding in C++) I think their OS called IRIX? became OpenGL. We the moved to Linux and ran everything on Dell Precision workstations for 20 years… same computers and drives in Fedora I think. They do not build computers like they used to.

I also had the chance to fly an approach at one point in the NASA 747 simulator… that was a beast. The P3 simulator was a mechanical marvel. At the time we had very good relations with the Navy and NASA. The alcohol study was run out of the BOQ at Moffett…. designed to mimic the post-flight Happy Hour with a very difficult flight the next AM… hence the “Hangover Effect” even at a legal 14h post last drink. They ran a successful educational program afterwards to teach the pilots they could be legal but probably not at top performance.

Same scenario as the tower. Back in the late 70’s early 80’s it was a different world. Crazy times back them. We did the 8 hours bottle to throttle too but often that was a stretch you might say. Did some of my best work hungover. Bet some of the pilots said the same. Am I right? Lost half our division overnight when the F14 slammed into the back of the Nimitz (think it was the Nimitz?). They were both stoned. Changes Navy-wide after that, and for that matter the civilian world too (random pee tests).

Yeah, I do not recall the Nimitz incident but circa 1985 or so there were 3 P3 incidents that fit this scenario which the Safety Officer recognized for what it was and reached out to us to do a study. The Admiral was all for it. They came up with the scenario of TWO engines out on one side on the P3 on landing. They never practiced this. You had to put ?60 lbs of pressure on the rudder pedal to do well. He used instructor pilots for the study and they were sent out to the fleet for briefing after this scenario and the incidents vanished. Believe all got promoted.

Self perception means zero. There was a long lost study during WWII where Army trumpters played their instruments on and off marijuana. They all thought they did better on pot but their are objective ratings of musicality and the blinded raters said otherwise.

If I understand this thread correctly there is code to do Hanger 2? 3 swear there were two of the newer designs. Is the limitation programmer time to port it over to MSFS 2024? I could see where Hanger 1 would be an epic task.

In the simulation I developed we based it at KSJC and I drew about 200 tire marks on the touchdown zone as individual polygons….. so I appreciate how painful this can be.

Outstanding! Yep never saw two engines out on one side nor for that matter two simultaneously at all. One engine out from out point of view was like saying our microwave oven’s out in the back. Happened all the time.

You think there is any way to figure out a way to do the programming? This is pretty much a niche market… old airship hangers.

Ha, in the late ‘90s, I was an IRIX tech support engineer at SGI. Watching your videos takes me back. SGI had a basic flight sim baked into IRIX to show off OpenGL. IIRC it was of an F-15. I have an old Indy in the garage. I might see if I can get it running for a laugh.
