Monitor not waking with MSFS24 minimised

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

Hi guys, would really appreciate some help on this.

Using Microsoft FS24, I minimise (with a background fps limit set to 20 in nvidia control panel) and turn off the monitor for long overnight flights (land in the morning). When I turn on the screen again, it doesn’t come back to windows. It usually stays off until i hard reset the PC.

I have a mild PBO negative offset 7800x3d
I have a mild undervolt (test significantly across all titles, no issues) Nvidia 4080s.

It could be the state of MSFS24 or the ini a350 but I have no issue minimising the sim and back as long as the monitor is on.

Any ideas? (I’ve just updated my bios to latest version, reapplied the settings but haven’t tested this yet),

If you believe your issue may be caused by a third-party addon/mod, empty your community folder, restart the simulator and try to reproduce the error.

Why minimize the game? Fair enough turn off the monitor to save energy. But it seems to me the fix would be not to minimize the game, just leave it running full screen with the monitor off.

They minimised it to reduce the framerate down to 20fps to save electricity.

There could be other workarounds though, @aceridgey you could always turn on vsync 1/4 refresh rate (or similar) in the sim settings when you arent playing, then turn it off again when you come back to your PC. That would also reduce the fps without minimising :slight_smile:

Are you gaming without a motherboard and a monitor?
Also, write BIOS version and Nvidia driver version.

So yes as some has said, minimising saves power by reducing fps because of the background limiter. monitor is AW3420DW, mobo asus b650e-f latest nvidia driver 572.60.

I wonder if it’s the sim or stuff being plugged into the monitor (i feel the former).

I was mistaken, you can only choose 1/3 refresh rate (33%)

There is a newer BIOS version available for your motherboard - it’s worth installing.

New Nvidia driver is available. It’s recommended to install it without Nvidia app.

“Background Application Max Frame Rate” limit should not be enabled for MSFS 2024/2020.

If “Background Application Max Frame Rate” is enabled and set to a limit (e.g., 30 FPS), exiting to the desktop and returning to fullscreen in MSFS may cause stuttering, freezes or even a CTD.

1 Update BIOS
2 Uninstall Nvidia driver via DDU
3 Install Nvidia driver 572.65 without nvidia app
4 Your monitor operates in the range of 120-22Hz.
Instead of setting the background app frame rate limit, I recommend setting “Max frame rate” to 30 in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Also, I recommend checking your Windows power plan settings and disabling sleep and hibernation.

FYI, setting a 100%,50%,33% frame rate limit in the MSFS settings does not limit FPS while you’re in for example main menu – FPS in main menu can still go up to 200. It’s better to limit FPS in the Nvidia Control Panel and turn on vertical sync for better performance and smoother gameplay.

Well the hotfix driver sounds really promising alone

“PC may boot to a black screen when connected via DisplayPort with certain monitors [5131002]”

This literally may be my entire issue.

I do have latest bios,

Question, can i limit frame rate in nvidia app without closing the sim for it to take affect?

You’d save a lot more electricity by skipping to top of descent. It’s horses for courses but it seemed odd to me to leave the sim running for hours on end when asleep. True it doesn’t bolster your logbook but still.

Oh yeah, certainly.

I’m of the same opinion, I’ve never understood why people do realtime long haul flights if they aren’t even there for it. I’ve never left any of my flights unattended like that apart from grabbing a drink etc.. I 4x sim-rate quite often on 2020, and in career mode on 2024 I’d skip to top of descent each time and just do more flights in total while I was actively playing.

At the end of the day it’s each to their own. If people want to AFK long hauls they can, and I’ll try to help them to do it as effeciently as possible :slight_smile:

Users like myself should be able to do what they want, including flying long haul whilst resting (sense of occassion, real time etc).

I won’t have time to replicate this as going away for a couple of weeks tonight. I’ll see if i can replicate it when home.

Question,

If i maximise something like volanta (which as moving map etc) I wonder if that could be a temporary solution when minimising the sim and turning off display?

I don’t know why your monitor is behaving the way it is, but I doubt it has anything to do with any individual application. More generally you could look at your sleep settings, and ensure you have any timeouts turned off, no screensaver, and no sleep timeout for the monitor. You will take care of that with the physical switch.

Also, check the Power Management tab in the network adapter properties and uncheck all the boxes there as well.

Thanks for some of your suggestions.

May I strongly disagree with performance power modes for 99.9% of people.

It massively increases gpu load (and significantly power consumption) for no added performance boost in games.

A gaming PC should run at maximum performance. If you disagree then my help ends here.

I respectfully strongly disagree, it offers no tangeable benefit than causing more electricity wastage and temperatures. The system will give you everything it needs when gaming and not run at max clocks when you’re on a Internet browser.

FYI, if you expect your CPU to downclock and lower its vcore during light workloads, such as web browsing, then you’ve chosen the wrong CPU.
Intel CPUs are much better suited for that for example i9 13900K or i9 14900K not Ryzen 7 7800X3D you have.
