Most accurately modelled Bush taildragger

Hi all. As I eagerly await the VR launch later this month, in the meantime I upgraded my Reverb G1 with the G2 and rebuilt my PC into a monster so I’m ready to go!
While I wait, I was curious what you all are finding to be the most accurately modelled bush taildragger. I was hoping some of you could share some feedback on the following items. I’m curious if they are properly implemented and modelled. Many thanks.

-tail dragger ground handling
-turbulence
-ground effect

Ordered my G2 on Sept. 5, no word yet on shipping. Eagerly awaiting. You want a realistic tail dragger, here you go: HOTFIX: Savage Carbon - STOL Realism Mod (v1.0.6.1 / Dec 1)

Tail dragger ground handling depends on whether you want to add steering linkages to the tail wheel or let it caster freely. Personally, I “field modified” my XCub with linkages by giving it a steering angle of 70°. The factory version in the sim has only 30°, which can make it handle a bit unrealistically. In real life, it would still caster past that thirty, so you can increase the throttle, step on one toe brake, and kick the rudder all at the same time and spin around in place. But as far as I know, the sim doesn’t allow both positive steering and castering at the same time. If you want true castering, you set the steering angle to 180°, which is actually a switch that tells the sim to just let the wheel flop freely. With that, you have to keep a little throttle to maintain rudder authority and ride the brakes. Otherwise, you’re likely to ground loop the plane and be looking at where you just came from real quick.

Get the Savage Carbon for a realistic tail dragger as well as backcountry experience.

@PogoBobby to answer your questions:

  • Ground loops are not yet simulated, other than that ground handling is pretty accurate IF the flight model has been setup well.
  • Turbulence and ground effect is fully simulated
  • In addition: adverse yaw, dihedral effect and body lift is not yet simulated (or very poorly), hopefully Asobo will add this soon.

It’s really a pity. They put more effort into fixing graphic errors it seems. The Savage Carbon mod is nice but cannot overcome this.

Great, I appreciate the response. There’s some good news in your post so things look promising. As for the savage cub mod, is this the same model as the bush league one I saw earlier?

If you’re talking about Bush League Legends, no. Their work is currently focused on the XCub.

Ok thanks, understood. I’ve now had a chance to look into their Xcub mod and it looks very promising as well, not to mention what they’ve been doing with multiplayer immersion. Great stuff.

My only interest in the sim is General Av Bush flying. My research so far has turned up the savage cub mod and xcub mod. I’m sure both have their strengths and weaknesses but can anyone speak to which is currently showing a stronger and more realistic flight model?

I think it depends on what kind of experience you want. I have flown the Bush League Legends, and it’s a very fine a/c. I’m a test pilot for the Savage Carbon Cub, and my personal feeling is that it has a higher performance capability, due to it’s lower weight and higher weight to horsepower ratio. You can climb at a 2000+ fpm climb, or you can land with the stall warning in your ear at 25 kts. and stop at practically any area you can find. Some of the areas you can land at, you would swear it couldn’t be done. Check out the YouTube videos at his site at:

I’m currently working on another mod at this very moment that will perhaps further enhance the capabilities of the a/c. It is a very realistic handling a/c that GotGravel has put in countless hours of research and testing to provide the most realistic bush plane he can possibly build. And we continue to try and improve the handling and performance to be as realistic as possible.

My best advice is to try them both, and see which you like the best. It wouldn’t hurt to have both a/c in your arsenal at the same time, you can swap at any time and fly whatever suits your fancy.

Thanks for the response. Yes for sure I will be flying both extensively. I understand they are two different aircraft, I owned a 150hp PA18 SuperCub myself and have a friend that owns a FX2 Carbon Cub.
I was more interested in hearing how they are implemented in the sim as far as flight and ground dynamic modelling. As we know, a lot of the skill in a tail dragger happens under 200ft agl. I’m curious how that window is being modelled as I’m sure it can be challenging to model.

I edited the thread title to more accurately reflect where I was going with my questions. Thanks

Yes you are right, most of the effort I put into modelling the Savage Carbon was below the 200ft behaviour (ground effect, flaps, drag, sink rates, rudder/yaw, weather vaning, etc etc) and ground behaviour. How it is done is a very long story, but my goal was always to make as an authentic backcountry taildragger aircraft as possible.

Crucial in the development also was the continuous feedback from 2 experienced pilots with experience in similar planes. Without them, the ac would not be where it is today.

The Savage Carbon and XCub are quite different, and enjoyable in their own way. I fly both. Both do cross country well and can do short fields. The XCub excels more at touring, with a higher level of comfort, range and a Garmin, whereas the Savage Carbon has a strong STOL focus (can do under 10m landings) and only has steam gauges.

Both also are being actively developed and supported and have their own (or overlapping) community.

As to how the flight model is actually being modelled…it is two parts: the parameters and the interpretation of them. The parameters define the unique behaviour, configuration and setup of each plane in the sim. This is something modders are in control of. The interpretation of them is done by the sim itself and is under Asobo’s umbrella. They too continue to improve the sim overall with each update.

I hope I answered most of your queries a bit…but if not I’ll be happy to answer any further ones.
