MS/Asobo - When Will HDR Be Fixed for Full-Screen?

Hi @HalfwayMoney731
I rather assume that not SU10 broke HDR, but one of the Windows updates. MS updates HDR every now and then with the Windows updates. MS keeps working on HDR and the driver manufacturers then have to make improvements. Recently with 22H2, many once again have HDR issues while others have none (and they don’t even play MSFS ).

Incorrect – it IS a MSFS thing. Does your HDR work in other games? Exactly.

Were you a beta tester for SU10? I am assuming not. This bug was identified during SU10 beta, which had nothing to do with a Windows update. If it was truly Windows’ fault, then HDR wouldn’t work whatsoever in MSFS, but it DOES work once you do the workaround, hence the question, “when will it get fixed.”

With all due, we know what we’re talking about. HDR has not worked properly since the beta of SU10. It has nothing to do with Windows. If it did, then HDR wouldn’t work correctly for any other game I play which is not the case.

I see that the HDR10 is off after SU10 however when I turn it on from windows settings it seems to ne on in the sim. it’s working? or it seems to be? Am I missing something?

No, typically what the majority of us beta testers found, started in SU10 Beta and was reported, by me and a few others, on week 1. It never got fixed, even after they “looked at it.”

The issue is for those who wish to play in fullscreen, your HDR will not start once you load into the game. MSFS’s general settings will even show you’re on HDR 10, but you’re not. Just use any 3rd party screen monitor for FPS, etc and you most likely can have your display show you when it’s receiving HDR (mine does).

The only way for this to work is the workaround. Start the sim in WINDOWED mode, then move the window to a different screen, move it back. HDR should be kicked on. Others, who may only have 1 monitor with them, just wiggle the screened MSFS window and jiggle it a bit, and HDR will turn on. Once this occurs, you can go into Fullscreen again w/ proper HDR working.

We just have to do this every time we launch the sim. Sigh.

Nope. I’ve tried that. Doesn’t work for me. And I’m not alone.

Note that for me, I have to resize the window after going into windowed mode, not just wiggle it.

For me, I start the sim in fullscreen, change to windowed (alt-enter). Then drag the window around a bit with the mouse, then alt-enter back to fullscreen.

Before I do this, HDR is clearly disabled. This is obvious both visually as well as dev mode fps counter showing SDR. After the workaround, it’s obvious that HDR is enabled, as well as being reported as HDR in dev mode.

This was discussed for several weeks in the beta in the other thread. It’s unfortunate that other people that didn’t participate in that discussion now appear here and introduce doubt. It needs to be fixed.

Yes, 10,000% agree with you last sentence.

I don’t even have HDR but I still have to ask when was the last time any of you updated your monitor’s firmware?

Please stop. This is just causing unnecessary conjecture to an already known issue. As we have all mentioned, HDR works completely fine with Windows 11/10. This is a SU10 MSFS issue.

Ok I won’t say a word more except such things might help. However I’m considering an HDR capable monitor in the near future so don’t blame me for being interested.

I actually never used HDR prior to reading all of the issues in the SUX Beta. I started using HDR to see what all the hype was about and I liked it, then after Beta update 2 or 3 (?) when the FPS tanked I switched back to SU9 and I was using HDR with no issues, I did not have to do the workaround. Once I switched back over to SUX Beta I had to do the work around, so I know that it is not a windows issue. I am on W10 not W11…

Thanks for your insight, we didn’t think of that.

And sorry for the sarcasm, but some of us have been active in this thread that started July 8.

It was just a thought … I run an oldish HDTV and my only option for firmware is over USB or satellite

such a shame this title doesn’t have proper HDR controls tho.
It is maybe one of the most important titles for HDR as it is simulating the real world kinda.

I have a LG C2 OLED and can’t fully unlock it’s capabilities cuz the sim it’s bad implementation is the bottleneck.
Hope Asobo fixes the issue and think of improving it in the meantime.

Do you still recommend disabling HGIG? I think you also mentioned lowering the values in the “secret menu”? Also, what do you think of the HDR tuning feature in Win11?

I am doing a totally different approach on my LG OLED C2 atm.
The colors are correct in filmmaker mode, so tone mapping can be turned on. (wrong in game optimizer etc)
Somehow tone mapping works totally different when outside of filmmaker mode.
what i however do is set color space to limited on the TV itself and to Full within nvidia control panel.
after that i play around with black levels a bit raising it by 1-2 ticks.
this gives me the best HDR + Colors and Brightness in MSFS and other games.

With filmmaker mode you can ignore fine tune darks and HGiG below as you can’t, play with black level instead.

Best game optimizer mode:
GPU Full range
TV Limited range
Fine Tune Dark Areas -11
Black level to 49
Tone mapping HGiG
Color Gamut Auto
Saturation 55
Tone Warm 50

Best for filmmaker mode:
GPU Full range
TV Limited range
Black level between 53-55
Tone mapping ON
Color Gamut Auto
Saturation 55
Tone Warm 50

(this does not look optimal for windows usage, but great for games in HDR that have no granular controls)
It crushes blacks u might not get used to at first, but my god it makes a nice difference especially night flying.

I agree HDR was working fine in SU9. I never participated in the SU10 beta but when I upgraded to the final released SU10 version bam! I had the HDR issue. Lol what a pain!

What I have also noticed as an alternate workaround is this:

  • before you exit MSFS, set it to windowed mode and HDR on in the settings.
  • when I start MSFS the next time it will go into HDR mode automatically without the shaking bit.
  • just set MSFS to full screen and you are good to go with HDR on!

The only hard part is to remember to turn windowed mode with HDR back on before you exit/quit.

I am still shaking everyday :frowning:
