Msfs 2020 will not shut down fully

This is about msfs2020 not shutting down.

Yup, installing the beta is no big deal. I think of it as a hotfix for this issue since the release notes are not that extensive. And it’s easy to go back.

I know what it’s about…lol. I am simply suggesting to install the beta rather than waiting for a non beta fix that may never come, or waiting for SU16 to go final.

I understand that installing the beta may seem easy and like a quick fix, but there have been cases where switching between the beta and regular versions caused MSFS 2020 to uninstall or become corrupted. Because of this, the beta version is not and won’t be a reliable solution for the problem at this time.

Also, we have long been warned about potential problems when joining or leaving the beta version, including the SU16 beta.

So, to repeat, the beta version is not an easy solution.

Yes. What happens in my case. After clicking Yes, the screen drops to the Task bar with the Yes request still showing. It won’t let me access that screen again. No worry. My life’s too short to worry about it. It’s just another computer quirk to me. I simply do what I’ve done with recalcitrant programs over the years. Task Manager and kill them at the source.

Has this error been acknowledged by MS? Do we know anything is being done? I realize it’s not affecting game play but it’s sure not helping their reputation or the desire to move to 2024.

Perhaps you could also confirm with them if a hotfix will be released, and when, for non beta users. I mean after all this issue was first reported over a month ago. Thanks.

Personal opinion, not an official response:

I’d guess it will be released with Sim Update 16, it’s included in the Beta but it hasn’t been hotfixed in Stable yet so it wouldn’t make sense to do a separate hotfix now, when the Beta will be released (hopefully) soon anyway.

Thanks. That was my thinking as well.

So we all understand and not waste any time in future; are you saying that when something is marked as ‘bug logged’ that means it is activily being worked on, or merely in a queue waiting to be worked on?
I think the general (most likely incorrect) perception is that it is the latter. This may be completely incorrect so I for one would welcome your clarification on this.

Unfortunately, during the 5-21-25 MSFS Developer Livestream, I believe Jorg indicated that 2020 Sim Update 16 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is targeted for a release date of July 1st. So it looks like it may be another month+ of waiting for the fix.

granted, this problem is not a serious one… but it really is a nuisance, because it sits there eating up a healthy amount of cpu cycles
currently im using both 2020 and 2024 depending on what i want to do that day, and yesterday i was having very bad performance and heavy stutter on 2024, wondering what the problem was, only later i realized that 2020 had left that “stub” there causing trouble

Both/either, that information isn’t publicly available (or to us Mods).

When a topic is tagged bug-logged it means the bug has been successfully reproduced on their end, has been assessed for priority, and added to the queue to be worked on.

Work will start on some bugs straight away (game-breaking showstoppers), others not, but we have no way of knowing whether a bug is currently being worked on.

So it is definitely the latter for all cases, but it is both for some cases

Since the problem has been fixed in SU16 beta, obviously the bug has been identified and resolved - i.e. it was definitely “worked on”.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

  • I was informed this was a duplicate report. Can’t delete it, though. See
Msfs 2020 will not shut down fully
  • The sim continues to run (using CPU and the cooling fan) after quitting, either using CTRL-F4, or Quit to Desktop from the main screen. An Icon remains on the Taskbar, and hovering over it shows the last window with the “are you sure” prompt on it, but that window disappears any time I move the cursor to interact with it. It comes right back, when hovering over the Taskbar icon again.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

  • No need to remove anything, as my Community folder is empty.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

  • This has occurred every time, with no exception, since it started happening after the last sim update.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Plan a long International flight in the 787-10, using Simbrief. Execute the flight, taking lots of screenshots, and saving the flight multiple times. Complete the flight successfully and shutdown the aircraft to cold and dark. Save the flight one final time.
  2. Attempt to quit the sim using either CTRL-F4 or the Quit to Desktop option. Window goes away, but the cooling fan continues to run at high speed. Check in Task Manager, and notice a sim process is still there, even after waiting overnight.
  3. Kill the sim process in Task Manager, which returns the computer to a normal quiescent state.

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:

  • Wired USB Thrustmaster HOTAS joystick+throttle unit, and wired USB mouse, both connected through a small USB hub. There’s also a wired USB DVD drive attached, but not used for this application.

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

  • No, I don’t have the knowledge to take advantage of Developer Mode.

[PC, MSFS 2020 Only] Are you using DX11 or DX12?

  • dxdiag says I’m using DirectX 12

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?

  • Task Manager says GPU0 is Intel UHD Graphics 630, 8GB memory

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

  • It’s a 2019 ASUS ROG Strix 17 GL703GE laptop
  • 16GB physical memory, 256GB SSD and 1TB HD
  • Running Windows 11
  • I usually have Firefox running at the same time, for searches and note-taking

MEDIA

Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.

  • As I said, the sim keeps running, without a window, so there’s nothing to snapshot

If you close with ALT+F4 you don’t get that option - and that may be the issue, that it is expecting a prompt response that doesn’t actually exist.

I don’t understand what do you mean monthly AIRAC? Sorry I am paying a fee monthly to Navigraph…If this is free then I will cancel my subscription. Thanks for any replies.

There’s always been a free monthly AIRAC to the sim since SU2. First it was Airbus Navblue, now it’s Lufthansa LIDO. That’s free to all sim users.

However, the Navigraph data is much more complete outside the CONUS region. If that’s important to you, you may wish to reconsider on ending your subscription status.

What I enquired about and was well answered was if the ‘bug logged’ tag in general always means it is being activily worked on or whether the bug is in a queue.
