ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

Tried a few passes, some were much better in my video here, but it seems the hook isn’t catching? I tried with no skips, various missions in the 152 and 172 that were available, and also tried resetting my game. I don’t think I’m terrible at this, I’m used to carrier landings and such on DCS and much more precision flying. This seems like a bug to me after attempting this 10+ times…

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)? Seems every time, I was able to do the first mission for this one on the very first try with ease.

  1. Start Game into Career Mode
  2. Choose Aerial Advertising Mission
  3. Fly Mission until the banner grab section, hook does not catch

Seems like its not registering you aligning properly or in time with the banner, your speed just gets into the desired zone in time. I ran this twice without any issues. All I can suggest is try getting aligned and get your speed down earlier?

• I have had the exact same situation as OP and the same thing happened as in their video. I have stopped doing these missions as a result. I appreciate OP’s dedication, and flying skills, to get such a shot.

• Same issues, I’ve tried dozens of times. I tried going really close to ~70kt, I tried going close to ~50kt, I tried every in between. I tried going just above it, I tried going down below it. I tried going down the middle. I’ve gotten the green alignment and green speed messages far earlier than what is shown in the video. They both remain green the entire time I’m trying to hook the banner…

I’ve done the exact same thing that was shown in the video, going to the external camera and I can see 100% clearly the hook going right down the middle, through the open loop of the rope. It does not hook, ever. I tried restarting the missions, restarting the sim.

A complete waste of time trying to do these types of missions.

So it seems that if I don’t get the “align with target” then it won’t connect even if I get pinpoint accurate with the hook.The speed is something I’m usually ready for when I’m not rushing for another try.

I’m not even sure it matters. I’ve had a dozen plus attempts and each time I got the “align with target” and speed mission steps marked green (and I kept them green through the entire attempt at hooking). Even earlier than in your video. I look outside the plane and the hook passes through the rope but it never hooks.

I’m not as patient as the OP. I tried three runs, the “Align with banner” never turned green, even though I was flying on a line smack in the middle of the markers. Obviously, the banner didn’t catch.

That it works for other pilots makes me think I was doing something wrong, but the game doesn’t tell me what, so I’ll stay away from this mission type.

I wonder whether the people who had no issues with this mission might have gotten the taildragger endorsement before trying it, and thus were offered another aircraft?
Maybe only the C172 pilots run into problems?

Ofc that’s pure speculation. I took another career path, so I can’t verify.

Don’t you have to complete this mission to unlock Florida region though.? I have the same issue never get the align green light no matter how many straight line passes.

Another thing with this mission. If you ALT +N to the takeoff point your plane gets stuck even though parking brakes is off.

I’ve only ran two missions (the initial one in Florida and one more) of banner towing and the hook worked both times.

I’m guessing it’s because I hit that parameter of “Aligned with Banner” but really they should make it so it’s more of a hitbox and then just ding your performance score if you happened to do it out of company regulation.

• My issue is picking up the banner and then dropping it immediately. 3 times in a row. I’ll try it again as others are successful. Assumed it was bugged

I had the same issue when I first tried the banner mission. The hook just would not catch the banner. Today, I tried the mission again and it worked at first attempt and also a second time. The only things that were different was that I extended the hook rather late during approach and that I didn’t use the auto pilot to get there. On my Honeycomb Alpha, the grapple hook button is mapped to the AP button by default. You may want to make sure that you assigned the grapple hook action to a button that you do not use for something else during the flight.

You seem to imply that we’re all just trying over and over again with the hook retracted.
Watch the video in the initial post of this thread, it’s just a minute long.

There’s something else at play.

The bug isn’t necessarily that the hook isn’t catching.

The instruction “Align with banner” seems pretty straightforward: fly on an imaginary center line between the yellow markers. For me, the bug is that the game doesn’t tell us why that isn’t enough to turn “Align with banner” green.

I found that to be the issue, ultimately.

In nasty crosswinds, I think your direction of travel isn’t what the sim looks for as much as the direction your nose is pointing?

I didn’t capture this, but there was one alignment that I was perfectly on course for, then I had to hard rudder to get the nose bang on HDG of the runway.

Additionally, I’ve seen a few other cases where both were green and it still didnt catch even though I saw a proper collision between the hook and the banner catch. — that one was particularly weird because I did see the banner kind of scoot way off because of harsh winds.

There’s likely a couple more things at play here like you mention, but I think I won’t fret with this particular mission if it stays inconsistent for more than 2-3 passes.

are you pressing the grapple hook button (default Y) shortly after passing through the rope? it never worked for me until I realized i have to press the toggle grapple hook button.

After 15 tries, I am short to give up. Is it a bug? Never get aligned with the banner checked, and never get it hooked.
