MSFS 2024 freezes when quitting to desktop

In my post above I report to have issues with final SU5, not beta (unfortunately). I never installed SU5 beta.

Update: Today I updated my NVidia drivers to the latest which were released yesterday the 12th (596.49) and I can now exit the Sim without having to go to the task manager…

Good on ya NVidia…

Same for me since few days, no more freeze on exit.

Since last freeze about one week ago two changes were made to my system: May Windows 11 update last Tuesday 12th, and Nvidia driver update to 596.49 (like you).

Most of times returning to desktop now takes less than 5 secs, sometimes (seldom) it takes 10 to 20 sec, but it finally happens !

I haven’t counted how many seconds fs24 takes to exit, (But it does exit to desktop) but it seems to take longer to exit now than it did before SU5. I am not complaining, I’m just glad I don’t have to go through the Task Manager any more. Glad to hear the issue has resolved itself for you also.

In the last 1-2 weeks it started happening for me again, most of the times confirming the “Quit to desktop?” dialog just freezes the UI but music continues to play.
And the sim never quits.

When I run my Steam version of the sim (I have both Store and Steam), every time I start up it tells me the last session didn’t end successfully. Every time. No problems with the Store version. I have no idea why.

Since 1.7.31 I’ve been getting these. Now that I know that others are having the same problem I’ll keep the dialogs.

Still occuring daily…

July 2026, MSFS.exe (Steam version) STILL not shutting down since day ONE the game was released in Nov.24.

No tips work, empty community folder and all.

The game exits to desktop but the FlightSimulator2024.exe keeps running in the background.

Have to shut it down via the button in Steam or via taskmanager EVERY TIME.

It’s not a hardware or driver issue so there’s no need to post all my pc’s specs.

Same issue on MsStore version as well. Quit to desktop screen hangs and the sim “not responding” in task manager.

Same here (msfs 2024 / ms store)

After today’s Sim update 6 the issue seems to be resolved.

Every time i exitted the Sim today it shut down properly.

For the past few weeks, I’ve also been having the problem that MSFS wouldn’t close properly. Through trial and error, I’ve now identified Nool VDGS as the culprit. When Nool VDGS is running, I have to close the simulator via the Task Manager. Without Nool running, it closes normally.
