MSFS 2024 start / launch time is significantly impacted by NVIDIA Control Panel's Maximum Frame Rate setting

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: The time to launch MSFS 2024 is significantly slowed by setting a maximum frame rate in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue? Yes and yes

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you? Every time on sim load

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Prerequisites: Use NVIDIA graphics card and drivers; remove everything from the MSFS 2024 Community Folder.

  1. Before launching MSFS, start the NVIDIA Control Panel then navigate to 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings
  2. From the Select a program to customise list, choose Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, then set Max Frame Rate to 60 FPS (for example)
  3. Press Apply in NVIDIA Control Panel
  4. Launch MSFS 2024 and observe the time taken
  5. Exit MSFS 2024, repeat steps 1 and 2, however set Max Frame Rate to Off, then press Apply
  6. Launch MSFS 2024 and observe the time taken

Expected result: NVIDIA Frame Rate cap should have no impact on the time taken to launch MSFS 2024
Observed result: The NVIDIA Frame Rate cap has a direct and significant impact on the time taken to launch MSFS 2024, as shown below. The vast majority of the time lost is in the ā€œLoading languageā€ phase of launching MSFS 2024. Note I have performed these tests multiple times to ensure the data is reliable.

It’s quite possible that this isn’t unique to NVIDIA - but I don’t have the ability to test with another GPU.

Nothing new, but thanks for the details I have already reported this several times, the Nvidia filters also have a huge influence on the loading time

Simply turn everything off, reactivate it in the main menu - Riva Tuner can be helpful for this - can be activated afterwards!
Since then I have normal loading time!

Thanks - I think it was your comments in some other posts that put me onto this. But however hard I searched I couldn’t find your comments again, and I wanted this to get some more attention by having a dedicated post with the bug report tag. Hopefully Asobo can add it to the bug backlog and investigate it at some point.

I’ll take a look at Riva Tuner as a workaround.

WOW, the last time I saw something like this was in Fallout 4.

I’m very curious about this post and just run a quick 4 MSFS2024 launch tests. Each separate by a Windows reboot. My community folder is empty.

2x with fps limit and 2x set to Off. Sorry, but I didn’t see any differences.

On my PC, fps limiter via nVidia App seems to have zero impact.

RTX 3080, driver 366.36, nvidia App 11.0.1.189, FG mod, DLSS 3.8.10. i710700kf, 64GB, Windows 11 23H2.

Interesting, thanks for checking. I’m defintely not alone in having this problem (see arniex78 above) but it sounds like there is also some other factor in the mix which means it doesn’t occur universally.

Confirm this issue too. Loading time with FPS limiter 10 mins and more. Without the limiter 3 mins or even less. No matter which version of the Nvidia driver version I use. Using 2 gsync monitors connected to a 4080.

@lc4c and @arniex78 since you both had this problem (same as me), but not everyone else does, please could you share a few more details about your monitor and graphics settings. It seems like there’s at least one more ingredient in the mix, in order to trigger this.

  • Monitor model: Samsung G9
  • Resolution and refresh rate : 5120 x 1440 @ 120Hz
  • G-Sync in NVCP: enabled for full screen mode
  • VSync in NVCP: Use the 3D application setting

Not sure if there are any other pertinent settings worth sharing - feel free to suggest anything I missed!

Here is another take at the ā€˜long loading language’ thing. And I use FPS cap via nvidia @50 FPS. Originally I posted this in the Telekom thread, because it seems like people think that it has something to do with DNS and Telekom.

But this topic here gives it another spin.

Basically:
Every second loading into FS works fine, if the previous loading stuck at ā€˜loading language’ process was forcefully killed via alt+tab and shutting down FS24 via task manager.

For me this is definitely 100% reproducable.
Can anyone with FPS cap and long loading language try to verify that?

I’ll give that a try later, thanks!

Also, don’t use alt+F4, that doesn’t work (for the second loading). I don’t know why. I tested that as well.
It only works if I close FS via task manager.

At first i didn’t believe this, but it is true. Have no idea why this NCP setting has this effect.

I’ll do it as soon as possible - I’m on duty right now - I’m sure it has to do with some settings, for me it’s FPS limitation and NvidiaFilters - 100% - can reproduce it every time!

System and Presets:

  • 2* 2.560 x 1.440 Monitors 160 Hz
  • RTX 4080
  • MSFS set to full screen mode on 1 Monitor
  • NVCP Gsync enabled for full screen mode
  • NVCP Vsync no
  • NVCP Max FPS no

As soon as the FPS settings is set to e.g. 60 or above the loading 6% issue arises.

Thank you for the bug report.

We have created an internal ticket to see if our team already has this logged, and if not they will attempt to reproduce the issue and create a new bug report. This item is now marked as feedback-logged. If there is an existing bug report or one is created, we will move this thread to bug-logged.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes, setting Max Frame rate to off dramatically reduces loading time, mainly at ā€œLoading languageā€ phase

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• Setting vsync on (with max frame rate set at 100%), or off, within MSFS2024 setttings makes no difference. Neither does having frame generation on or off. Unbelievable!
As long as the NVCP max frame rate is off, loading time is around 2 min, coompared to 7 min with it on
RTX 4090, Nvidia driver 566.36
Edit - When checking this make sure you choose the ā€œProgramā€ tab in the NVCP, and MSFS2024 as the program. I made the mistake of choosing the ā€œGlobalā€ tab at first, and of course got no result!

I am having this same issue, and I see you are running Windows 11 23H2. I am running 24H2, may be the problem.

Are you running Windows 11 23H2 or 24H2. I have 24H2 and have this same issue.

Interesting findings. I also have a max frame rate setting in Nvidia Control Panel of 50 fps and a background application max frame rate of 20 fps. I haven’t noticed a significant issue with the loading times being unduly long.

But I plan to run some experiments with this tonight and time the loading with the current settings and without.

The reason I use these limits is a holdover from 2020 where the sim would really push the GPU quite hard on the checking for updates step so I just adopted them for the new sim as well. I try to balance performance and GPU temperatures so if that means a few more minutes of loading, I can live with that.
