MSFS Cannonball Run Challenge (KJFK to KLAX in a GA plane for charity) [Prize from Microsoft]

You could also make the livestream mandatory, or get a ref who checks up on everyone via webcam every now and then. That’s how they do it here in online classes and stuff.

Just had to break up my (already 12 hour) flight from JFK to KLAX because the AP on the 172 totally freaked out. Kept stalling, Pitit Heat was on, no ice on the wings, just because of a bug. Have a nice flight guys, i am not going to do this with these kind of bugs. It ■■■■■■ me off. Goodluck…

This sounds like a fun event. I won’t be there but might log in and check out the maps and discord during the day if I’m not too busy.

I think the 330 has clear advantage over all of the other remaining aircraft. The 330 aside, the top remaining aircraft are close in performance. We are a competitive species and I think about this professional mountain bike racer that got busted in Belgium a few years back with an electric motor hidden in the bikes frame. People can be sneaky.

I think this could be a stopper for somebody. Is just a game, why cheating??

Well, if it’s a competition it’s not just a Game and cheaters will be cheaters. Everyone can participate without streaming/been checked up just for fun. But if a prize is on the line, people will cheat.

Lovin’ the idea and count me in.

One question though, is simair.io smart enough to be able to recognise anyone increasing the sim rate?

Good question!

@Null2209?

More questions:

Is it spawn at parking or spawn on runway?
Is it 1300Z, all roll…ignore ATC, ignore take off clearance, ignore if you’re on a runway, taxiway or grass divider…who cares, just roll?
With fuel stops, is it just “you have to stop for 10 minutes”, ie remain motionless (according to simair) at an airport for 10 minutes…or if it’s 10 mins from landing to roll from runway, how is simair tracking it.
That last question was rambling. Shorten it to: How is simair tracking fuel stops?

Spawn wherever you want, but no takeoffs are permitted before exactly 1300Z.

Yup.

The intent is that you land, come to a complete stop on the runway, engage the parking brake, refuel using the in-game menu, then wait for exactly 10 minutes before taking off again. Simair should be able to track your airspeed, altitude, and throttle setting, so we can use those data points to determine if someone waited the required 10 minutes or not.

Will we be able to come to a complete stop, then reposition on the runway and wait, so long as we do not begin taking off prior to the 10 minutes?

I planned to land, stop, start a timer, taxi to the departure end of the runway, wait until 9:30 time elapsed, refuel, and at 10:00, start the takeoff roll. Will this be allowed?

Yes, that’s fine. You’re not breaking any rules as long as you fully complete your landing and then wait exactly 10 minutes before taking off.

So you’re measuring the 10 minutes from a 0 airspeed (ie stopped on runway) til altitude starts increasing again? That’ll work. Shame though, cos it’d add another layer of immersion if all competitors were forced to taxi to fuel at wherever they landed. If the sim ever permits events where things like that can be set and specified I’d highly recommend it. It’d be very amusing to watch all those tail draggers ground looping from people taxiing too urgently.

What’s the penalty if someone rolls at 9m45s?

Yes, this is correct. [Edit] Actually, the timer starts once airspeed and throttle start increasing again (i.e. takeoff roll), not altitude.

Completely agree, but I don’t know of any way we could monitor and validate that everyone did this fairly.

My first instinct is to just add the missing 15 seconds to their final time and not tack on an additional penalty beyond that. I really want to keep this event as light-hearted and fun as possible without obsessing too much over the rules, but I understand some people will take the competition very seriously, especially since there’s such an awesome prize on the line. What does the community think is an appropriate response if someone takes off too early instead of waiting the full 10 minutes?

That means that once a pilot has stopped he can’t taxi to takeoff position.

or to a gas station

Taxi to takeoff position immediately after landing before coming to a complete stop?

Or, since we’re all flying single-engine GA planes, just takeoff from your landing point. It’s not like you need the entire runway to reach takeoff speed in a Cessna or Diamond or whatever.

Yeah I was thinking more of those of us who’d fill the ten minute waiting period with full ATC controlled taxi to fuel / request of refuel truck, followed by taxi to take off. And, of course, those of us who’d fill the ten minutes with taxi racing around the apron cos they’re nutters.

How about the ten minute wait being from first 0 airspeed (ie stopped on runway) to the next time the aircraft hits 50kts?
