MSFS Glass is released - [New Free & Open Source companion] - Control your planes from any device!

Hi fellow Aviators,

I’m both happy and relieved to announce the release of MSFS Glass, the evolution of the brilliant MSFS Mobile Companion App - revived and refreshed for MSFS 2024.

r/flightsim - MSFS Glass is released - [New Free & Open Source companion] - Control your planes from any device!

MSFS Glass is a tool that allows you to control essential aircraft instruments such as NAV/COM frequencies, autopilot, or lights using almost any mobile device, laptop, or PC. It features a fully-fledged “map experience” to follow and augment your MSFS flights. MSFS Glass is forever free to use and open source.

I’ve been working on this tool since the beginning of this year, and while it is not yet in a state I’d call ready, I am at a point where I can share it with you. With your feedback, we can improve it together.

You can download it (or build it) from the GitHub repo or flightsim.to. Note: Don’t download it on your mobile device! Download and run MSFS Glass on your PC where you are running the sim, and then connect to it via an IP address on your other devices’ browser.

For more information please visit the GitHub page.

As this is the first release that will be running outside of my environments, I encourage you to report any issues or quirks you experience. I would like to resolve first the core issues that might affect connections towards the Sim, getting and sending data to the Sim and the overall stability of the webserver. Feel free to open issues and discussions on GitHub, leave a comment, or reach out to me directly.

Thank you & happy flying!

Note: Unfortunately, due to the limited SDKs on Xbox, this is working only on the PC version.

That’s pretty impressive!

May have to check this out, handy for the long hauls with step climbs on aircraft that don’t auto step.

I’m beyond exstatic that one of the best second-screen applications has a spiritual successor!

This feels like a dumb question, but it’s compatible with FS20 still, right?

Follow link to the Github page and read the readme file. It explains all. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

FYI, uses of Microsoft Edge may have difficulties downloading this from github, as Edge auto-deletes the zip file, flagged as “Virus Detected”:

I downloaded from flightsim.to using edge and didn’t have any issues.

Hmm - just tried that. The file from flightsim.to was also auto-deleted:

Yup, you’re right. I didn’t look close enough. EDGE deleted the file and detected it as a virus when downloaded from Flightsim.to.

Chrome downloaded it fine.

This feels like a dumb question, but it’s compatible with FS20 still, right?

In theory, MSFS 2020 implements the same features in its SDK, but some things have changed in 2024. I’d say the basic and generic things will work (they are called Sim Events and SimVars like “toggle gear”, “plane position” etc.) but the plane-specific pages will most certainly not. Avionics has changed a lot, so don’t expect e.g.: MCDU buttons to work on an Airbus in 2020. (I might be wrong tho ) There is a lot of custom development like that for specific planes in 2024, those for sure will not work. I personally haven’t tested it on 2020, but I am familiar with the SDK and confident it works to some extent.

That’s strange as Microsoft Defender cleared it for me. Do you use any 3rd party AV software?

Just a note on the whole Anti Virus false positive issue: Unfortunately, this is a known behavior for Python scripts packaged to Windows exes using Pyinstaller (probably a lot of actual harmful software was packaged with it).

I am actively working with AV software vendors to exclude this from their models. Larger vendors already cleared it within a few hours (AVG, Avast, Avira), smaller labs might take longer, or remain unresponsive.

For full transparency, find the TotalVirus reports here and here. I already contacted the remaining vendors. But regardless of my efforts to maintain security or what I say, as with any software on the internet, please always examine the source code, and build your own binaries if possible.

Hi @fzsombor ,
No, I have no third party anti-virus software installed - Just the standard Windows Defender that comes with Win11.

Edge is configured thus:

I tried to reproduce it on Windows 11 and Mac with Edge, your settings, and MS Defender, but it is downloading without an issue for some reason. Is it possible to download it from another browser and Right Click → Show more options → Scan with Microsoft Defender? If that provides some finding, I can work with Microsoft to update their database with this false positive.

@fzsombor
To keep things simple & to avoid conflicts, I don’t have another browser installed. I’d not worry about it unless a lot of other users report the same issue.

I downloaded it from flightsim.to using Firefox under Windows 11, and MS Defender deleted it, giving a threat message.

I also got virus alerts from windows defender . Eventually downloaded it by setting defender anti virus to “allow” the suspect file. A bit of a faff but works well and no sign of malicious activity. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I just tried again from flightsim.to using EDGE and the file definitely downloaded. Also the file name is different from yesterday.

flightsim.to is putting a suffix on the filename, it should start with MSFS_Glass_2.0.0-beta. If you upload it to VirusTotal, it should show this page. I managed to clear some false positives yesterday, maybe Edge’s database has also updated in the meantime.

Unsure why this works for some with MS Defender, and not for others. On VirusTotal the Microsoft detecting has cleared for false positive, so it should be available in their latest database. I am not familiar with it, but are there maybe some updates missing? Maybe here?

Today I redownloaded from .to and was able to unpack the file.
