MSFS very very very long loading time

Trying to understand why with my new NVMe SSD (having an average read time of 3500 Mb/s) has not improved at all the loading time of MSFS (compared to my SATA SSD) I have monitored it using Process Monitor tool and there are really strange things happening in the background

One really strange is the great number of access to the same file (like \Packages\fs-base-onboarding\SOUNDINIT\SHARED_MINIMAL.PC.PCK) that is really slowing down it (with pause between them where the PC seems doing absolutely nothing)

Any clue about how to increase the loading time ? I’m already using the -fastlunch option to avoid the annoying the initial splash intro videos

Moin,

This is one of the biggest mysteries of MSFS and I would also be interested.

Because it’s not just loading, it’s downloading data as well, and it has nothing to do with your SSD speed. If you use the sim completely offline, it loads much faster. But in order to get the benefits of live weather, better scenery, photogrammetry etc, it needs to download a lot of data, both when you start the sim and when you actually load a flight. I noticed that if I disable all streaming, even on my Xbox the sim starts in just a few seconds. So it’s not the local loading that takes long but downloading things from the cloud, and it depends more on internet and server speeds.

Hi

that’s reasonable but having a 1Gb/s connection I should expect something better (and the multiple access to the same file is anyway not having sense)

I have a fast connection but I have the same issue with loading times. Especially at the start, it takes minutes. I guess it’s not just a straightforward download but a similar process to when you install an add-on. Lots of small files, downloading, decompressing, installing, etc. It’s just all happening in the background while we are looking at the loading screens. Annoying, yes, and the developers have also said they’d like to shorten the waiting time but it will require a deeper redesign of the sim’s systems, so it will not happen in the near future.

Can you give a loading time? Do you load many community add-ons?

I have an average of 5 minutes

I have quite a lot of addons in my community folder but even if I remove them the loading time is more or less the same

my loading time exceeds 12 minutes with empty community folder and 200mbps connection.
This very slow loading time appeared after the recent WU, before that it was approx. 5 minutes.

reinstall MSFS
In order not to download everything, rename your “OneStore” folder OneStore.old, for example, by windows, delete MSFS, rename your OneStore folder, and relaunch an install. You will only re-download the launcher (1 GB and dust) and what you are missing in the OneStore folder. Of course you reinstall in the same location.

That’s hardly very very very long.

More mods usually helps. Especially installing AIG does wonders.

Since WU8 it’s been taking 3:45 to load into the sim and an additional 3:15 to load a flight.
I have fast internet and an SSD.

My setup takes 3:20 to Welcome screen. The black window appears at second 44.

Radeon 6800XT MBE
Dual SSD
Windows 11
ISP @ 30Mbps.

I always suspected DRM to be the culprit for the initial appearance of whatever on the screen.
It’s hard to justify 44 seconds to first window in 2022.
And yes, it is extremely slow to start. Annoyingly slow.

It’s a funny thing, but I thought it had got faster if anything, and I’ve said so on these forums. But I’ve just timed it and it’s five minutes, where it used to be three.

The main thing, though, is it doesn’t seem longer; hence my mistake.

Actually I wanted to say “decrease”

What scenery is it downloading? While the sim is starting up, it has NO CLUE where I am going to fly.
Maybe it is all of those silly movie splash pages?

If there’s something silly then it’s such a comment

MSFS creates a virtual filesystem with all the official and community stuff, validates dependencies of all the contents (each folder depends on other package’s versions), checks for missing contents (which it would automatically offer to download), decrypts DRM protected contents etc.
Sometimes loading takes longer due to compilation of WASM which is a one-time task, sometimes it might be caused by shader caching etc.

There’s a lot happening that is required to get the sim running. And if you think you can make assumptions on whether there is time wasted, you overestimate your own insight into the processes.

I figured

But 5 minutes isn’t that bad in the great scheme of things. As in: it’s normal for the sim to load that long.

The loading times were mentioned in the last dev q&a and I believe they’re working on it.

Thank you for that … Your comment made a lot more sense than the one directed to me that appeared to bash my insight into the process. Looking forward to the next several updates. thank you.

What if (in the start up screen) it asks you “What area/s do you want to fly in today?” You tick the appropiate boxes (or none if you will be flying halfway around the world) and it then just loads those area/s rather then loading each and every World Update?

Aha, and do you really think that browsing the earth, and ticking boxes would seriously reduce the five minutes loading time? I think the contrary. Five minutes is a good average in my opinion. This is a sim, not a game you know. And simming’s all about slow and careful.
