Msfs2020 crashes on loading

2020 loads in correctly but when I load the game the percentage bar gets to about 50% it just crashes. I have tried a fresh windows install.

system is 13th Gen intel i9-13900k

       64gb ram
       nvidia Geforce gtx4090 24gb
       2tb nvme

Given this is a fresh install of Windows, and you are using an nVidia GPU, I am assuming you also have the latest drivers installed.

Just looked through log, and you do:

DriverVersion=“58115”

If you do a forum search you’ll see some long threads on this.

Latest drivers on DX11 cause this issue. Either switch to DX12 or revert to driver 577.00

This bug (CTD during loading MSFS 2020) has been with us since January 30th, 2025. Since driver version 580.88, CTDs during MSFS 2020 loading with DX11 selected in the game settings occur even without the NVIDIA app installed, so the situation is now even worse than before.

If you want to have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed, MSFS 2020 must be set to DX12 instead of DX11 until NVIDIA, Asobo, Microsoft release a fix.

Please make sure to participate in the linked thread to confirm you’re also affected by this bug.

MSFS 2020 CTD during loading with or without NVIDIA app installed (DX11)

There are many threads about CTD during MSFS 2020 loading. They include some workarounds, but none of these threads have the “bug logged” tag. I want this thread to be a main thread where players affected by this issue can post. The game developers should take this CTD seriously and work together with NVIDIA to find a fix. WORKAROUND

Until Nvidia fixes drivers and Asobo MSFS 2020 please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

Are you sure 577.0 is the cutoff? I have this issue with 576.88 too. I think the newest one that doesn’t have the issue for me is 572.83.

From driver version 572.16 up to 577.00, with the NVIDIA app installed, MSFS 2020 will crash to desktop during loading if running in DX11.

Starting from driver version 580.88 CTD during loading happens even without the NVIDIA app.

So, if someone wants to play MSFS 2020 with DX11 and driver versions 572.16 to 577.00, they should avoid installing the NVIDIA application. If they want to use the latest drivers, MSFS 2020 has to be set to DX12 instead of DX11 until a fix is released.

Tried it with driver version 566.14 and it still only goes to 50% then CTD.

Hi many thanks to everybody for the replies. To resolve the issue I used the geforce experience and set the simulator settings to optimise for driver 518.18 which uses DirectX 12 as standard. Everything works well hopefully this helps someone.

Great to hear you got it working and can enjoy flying again.

Just a quick reminder - a couple of days ago I suggested how to switch MSFS from DX11 to DX12 without installing any extra software or messing around with Geforce Experience or the even more buggy NVIDIA app.
