I thought, I’ll give the ATR another shot. Having flown the ATR in real life I was disappointed when it came out, especially because of the title “expert series” which in my opinion is not this, there is nothing expert about it. And as a response Blackbird dropped their study level ATR.
I don’t know where to start…
- First of all the cockpit colours are awful, doesn’t come close to the real one. It is too greenish. It is supposed to be blue - greyish. Basically all the colours are incorrect, also the darker blue shades. Also the ATPCS cover is somehow a completely different colour.
- Wrong materials in cockpit, a lot of panels that are shiny shouldn’t be. Basically all panels are shiny. Example below. Also that speaker switch isn’t black on the real aircraft.
- Display size and placement incorrect.
- No CCTV screen on right console as installed on all ATR 72-600, cameras are there in the 3D model. It is implemented (wrongly) on the MFD when selecting VIDEO. On the real aircraft VIDEO switch has no function.
- No avionics initialization and built in tests when turning on batteries (only MFC).
- List of faults on EWD incorrect on battery.
- List of faults on EWD on GPU way too short before start-up.
- Electronic checklist not going back to list when checklist is open and selecting RCL
- Able to “complete” checklists without all items ticked.
- Able to open door without turning off CDLS.
- Weird white texture on wipers
- Oxygen mask is only supposed to show a yellow cross momentarily when tested.
- Overhead panel instrument lighting is not supposed to work without ACW.
- Instrument lighting rotary knobs are copy-paste from the PWR MGT selector, they shouldn’t have 2 halves:
- PFD does not look correct for NAS-3. The airplane symbol is no longer centered within the background, also colours are off:
- APM messages not shown on FMA (at least not during test). APM button no OFF light when switched OFF.
- IESI SEL and rotary knob incorrect behavior
- Nosewheel steering not amber on HYD + ACW SYS page when switched off with pressure available.
- Blue system (and green system when using XFEED) pressure instantly 3000 psi upon pressing AUX PUMP pb, pressure instantly 0 after AUX pump cycle completed.
- No PROP BRK READY light even though all conditions are met. Unable to engage PROP BRK using AUX pump. PROP BRK READY light only comes on after engine start…
- FUEL SO shouldn’t illuminate on condition lever if CL is already in fuel shutoff.
- CVR test works without pressing GND CTL.
- Wrong cabin call chime
- No stall warning when doing stick pusher test. STICKPUSHER shouldn’t be illuminated on FMA straight away.
- Terrain display way too detailed, the real aircraft has way lower resolution.
- ATPCS test provides wrong electronic checklist (should be ENG FAILURE ON GND)
- PRAIM test page not correct on ground. Otherwise FMS quite well modelled. Some things not functional such as temperature compensation. Missing predictions on CRUISE PERF page.
- FMS does not correct approach speed for wind factor.
- Cruise altitude 150 should be recognized as FL150.
- Shouldn’t be able to modify altitude constraints on SID (min turning altitude).
- NAS-3 should not start up with NAVs AUTO.
- Rudder trim switch not modeled correctly, should pivot at the bottom of the switch, not the middle.
- CAN’T GET THE LEFT ENGINE TO START…
- Blue IGN shouldn’t be visible on EWD during start, only when selecting MAN IGN.
- ITT not shown when selecting CRANK (incorrect).
- SOUNDS LIKE A FREAKING KINGAIR… Absolutely awful sounds.
- Temperature MAN on MFD SYS page even though temperature set to AUTO with no fault.
- No “CHECK TO SPEEDS” in case of discrepancy between icing / normal speeds and anti-icing selection. Ticking ICING CONDITIONS box should unconfirm the take-off data.
- V speeds not shown on speed tape.
- Min turning altitude of 1300 ft supposedly reached over the runway and also the TOD (did later update in flight)…
- Starts descent accelerating to 170 kts after take-off, shouldn’t…
- No tripple click sound with “CHECK NAV SRC” when changing nav source while in LNAV.
- Selecting BOOST on in flight should cause a FAULT.
- When selecting a runway / approach, the FMS shouldn’t show STARs not for that runway
- Adding a approach / runway for whatever reason changed the SID.
- MFD shows APPR on departure (should only appear 2 nm from FAF on RNAV approaches).
- No torque target bugs.
- FMS has no turn anticipation when going direct to a waypoint.
- Rudder trim centered in flight, should be half to 1 tick mark to the right. Apparently propeller effects are not modeled.
- There should be no AP disconnect sound when engaging AP.
- The low speed warning “SPEED SPEED” should be accompanied by a triple click sound, not AP disconnect warning with AP already OFF.
- DTO and then modifying INBD CRS does not work.
- And then there is loads of stuff not functional.
Modifying some stuff on the VCP, whole aircraft froze. So my testing ends here for today. Absolutely underwhelming (as it has been before).
Conclusions:
- The whole aircraft occasionally freezes.
- Can’t start the left engine using normal procedures.
- Propeller brake can’t be engaged before engine start.
- The interior model is bad, doesn’t look or feel like an ATR.
- Sounds are awful, it sounds like a beech King air.
- Absolutely no system depth, lot’s of stuff incorrect.
- Overall nothing about this aircraft is “expert”.

Can you still have fun with it? oh yes
Can you replicate real life procedures like seen in the Magnar Videos? I strongly believe so.
Still one if my favorite planes in the sim. Had a few nice flights in 2024.
I hope that a more serious developers takes it to study level someday.

Can’t get the left engine to start, screens freeze, it is not even remotely useable. And real life procedures, definitely not. Can’t even get the propeller brake on before engine start. Yes it is cheap, but it caused Blackbird to ditch theirs which would have been a study level aircraft. There is nothing “expert” about this.

The biggest mystery about MSFS remains the fact that some things that work for some don’t work for others and owed to the complexity of the sim its often difficult to find the conflict. Never had any of the issues you described e.g. Prop brake, engine start, freezing etc.

the freezing problem is relatively recent, it started with the latest update, right at the end of the 2020 era, and it carried over into 2024
i dont know about all the other bugs the previous poster describes, but the freezing is definitely an issue

And to make it harder, it is almost impossible to replicate as it happens just all of a sudden.
Is there anything like a error log or something we can post after it happens?

Description of the issue:
- aircraft on ground (MS default SBGL Parking 1 - RAMP GA MEDIUM)
- using external power
- main battery on
- open ATC window and select ATIS
- no voices!!!
- NOTE: using Bonanza, Duke Turbine, Baron etc. It is ok

You have to go to market place, then at the top something like content, enable ATR, then restart.

Thanks for the tip. ATR is back. Everything is fine 
I’ve searched the forums and the internet in general for an answer to this but I haven’t found a solution. Anytime I try to access the marketplace it simply says “Coming Soon”. How do I activate the ATR? It disappeared a week or so ago.
When you open marketplace, at the top there is an option “library”.
“My Library”, correct, that’s there

There you can enable the ATR and restart.
Got it, thanks! For others - you need to scroll down (with no filters selected) and check the box, more options, and click activate. It will require a restart of the sim.
