Don’t forget: when you set your physical throttle almost at 0% (on final, over threshold, etc.) in FS24, you’re actually setting your Caravan throttle in beta range! I have the impression that some of the comments I’m reading sound like they have set their Caravans in beta inadvertently.
This new functionality has not been announced or explained, and I think it has not been implemented in any other turboprop.
I’m using a magnet in that position in my throttle as fake detent to avoid this situation.
After crashing in career mode at landing and paying 1.7 million for repairs I trained landing in freefly and was really confident. Landed on small tiny grass airfields. No problem!
So I tried to do a nother medium cargo with my 208 and crashed it again. Now I have to grind 2 million for repairs…
so, you’re saying bottom of the Caravan’s axis settings (without enabling reversers) is beta? that’s a terrible decision on Asobo’s part if so. i thought the beta setting was the lower 20% of reverse, which is how every other plane with reversers works (for instance, the Pilatus PC-12). i also thought that 0% throttle was ground idle (which it absolutely should be). i’ll have to test this.
the bottom range of the Pilatus PC-12’s reverser axis definitely behaves like a beta range. it’s slower than ground idle, without actually going into reverse.
anyway, this post (a followup to yours from that thread) seems to contain the solution (at least for people with the TCA throttle):
in the sim. i regularly use it to taxi without overspeeding. Carenado’s reversers are also set up (correctly) so that the bottom 30% of THROTTLE AXIS 1 (0 to 100%) maps to beta/reverse, which lines up perfectly with the reverser detent on the ATC Throttle (once you set a custom curve). meanwhile, the Asobo Cessna 208B THROTTLE AXIS 1 (0 to 100%) is mapped to nothing. the bottom 30% is just 0% throttle.
EDIT: i see now Asobo have created a unique and special THROTTLE SET axis which ONLY works with the C208 (it’s saved in the Specific 208B Grand Caravan EX controls config) and which behaves exactly like THROTTLE AXIS 1 (0 to 100%) does for every other single-engine plane. i guess they had to be different. thanks, Asobo.
there’s also a PROPELLOR SET axis (again, unique to the C208), which with the following custom curve will permit you to feather and unfeather using the TCA Throttle reverser detent (on, say, JOYSTICK LAXIS Y).
the plane can now land without wingdropping and cartheeling, which, as it turns out, was caused chiefly by chopping the throttle when the bottom of the normal throttle axis is (by default) halfway into the beta range.
additional tips from the EFB checklist: apply full back stick when braking during the rollout to prevent the nose tipping over (another fun gotcha).
I have the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke System (with the Throttle Quadrant). I set “Thrust Reverser” in the MSFS 2024 settings for my flight yoke, so I’m not sure why you would care if it was encrypted in the file. My custom settings appear to override anything streamed down from Asobo, so I don’t need to re-set the settings every time I start MSFS 2024. For the C208B, I have the reverser set to the Propeller Control detent and then raise the throttle to get the C208B to stop quickly. My settings in MSFS 2024 for the reverser are:
First, I set the Propeller control to minimum but not down into the detent.
Next I find the “HOLD THROTTLE REVERSE THRUST” setting and set it to “SCANNING”.
Finally, I lower the Propeller control down to the detent, then raise it back out of the detent.
The setting for “HOLD THROTTLE REVERSE THRUST” now shows “RX” as the setting.
To use it, after landing I drop the propeller control down into the detent and the throttle now controls reverse thrust. I increase throttle to slow quickly and when I’ve slowed enough, I cut the throttle, move Propeller control out of the detent, and now taxi normally
as discussed in my post just above yours, i’ve resolved the issue and now have the TCA throttle quadrant detent working in axis, using a super sekkrit 208B-only axis called THROTTLE SET which doesn’t appear to exist for any other plane in the roster.
ReverseInAxis is a config file setting which tells MSFS that the same axis should include both reversers/beta, then ground/flight idle, then normal propulsion, meaning they can be used with THROTTLE (0 to 100%) and the lower 20% of that axis will control the reversers without the need to press any ENABLE REVERSER buttons.
however, since the setting is not present in the C208B config file, the bottom 20% of the THROTTLE (0 to 100%) axis does absolutely nothing, unlike every other plane with reversers, and ground flight/idle starts 20% up the axis.
fortunately, but somewhat unecessarily, Asobo’s unique THROTTLE SET axis behaves like THROTTLE (0 to 100%) would if its ReverseInAxis config file setting was enabled.
Is there any way to speed up the altitude dial on the MPC, maybe set it to thousands? I’m using mouse lock mode and it’s awful slow to adjust either with mouse wheel or dragging.
OK, I can see that in “legacy” mouse mode at least I can hold down the mouse to continually move it but it’s still a pain and I much prefer “lock” mouse mode in general.
Thanks for your feedback! I was also flying today and for the first time saw some good icing effects. Even on the wind shield which I couldn’t replicate in free flight.
However, anti-ice still doesn’t seem to have any effect on windshield or frame. The icing effect stays the same
This is one of my favorite planes but it has a few small issues.
-None of the Inertial Seperator Toggle/Set/On/Off keybindings work, you can only pull the lever with the mouse.
-Autopilot sways left and right, I thought it was the flight model at first but it flies perfectly straight when I turn Autopilot Off, this happens with Yaw Damper On or Off it makes no difference.
-The range on the stats page in career mode is wrong, it’s certainly not over 1000nm, the best I could get is 600nm at the legal unpressurized altitude (12.5k ft) even with a strong tail wind and the condition lever on low idle, prop rpm set to 1600 and the inertial separator off.
Some of the medium cargo missions I’ve seen go up to 720nm so it’s a trap if you try to do them. The true range is about 550nm without a tail wind.
omg, thank you.
spent hours trying to make throttle(beta/rev) and prop work.
Made me buy spad.next, even with that i could not get the prop feather to work.
Just one question, (how)does Engine Condition on axis work ?
Im 100% sure i had it working at some point, for cutoff and low/high idle.
It does not any more, and i have no clue if i broke it, or some update.
Need to pull back on the power, can do over 700, just need to lower the fuel flow to around 400-420 pph. Also it is important to check the winds and take advantage of them if possible by climbing / descending as appropriate and avoid any missions where headwinds are too strong. The Windy app is pretty good for checking wind at various altitudes.
I’m not near the sim ATM, but I’ve got it successfully bound (I use the otherwise useless spoiler axis on the TCA throttle) I THINK to one of the mixture axes… but i’ll check tomorrow and get back to you.
condition lever only affects the idle power, its literally called “high idle, low idle”, nothing beyond that. fuel consumption in flight does not change based on this.
you can get fuel flow down to 320 pph for econ cruise. thats like 6hrs of flight time at 115 ktas. thats 750+ nm with no winds.
