Took this up for a, well a float around I guess. It was quite an interesting experience.

First up when I started my flight the basket was tilted over and the balloon envelope deflated. No worries, I thought, I’ll just follow the checklist to get the burners going and inflate this bad boy. So as I was burning away it inflated a bit and then I was dragged across the ground for quite some distance until it righted itself and I started gaining some altitude. And then I was gone with the wind.

It was a bit windy so I was making some speed. The balloon kinda tilts backwards when you get a good head of wind and it looks rather strange. I’ve never been in a hot air balloon but I live in Bristol in the UK where one can see quite a lot of balloon flights (see the Bristol Balloon fiesta) and I’ve never seen one tilt like that before. Maybe it was just a bit too windy I dunno.

I was mucking around with things and I pulled that parachute chord quite a bit until my ballon deflated and started to hurtle towards the ground. Luckily I had several thousand feet of altitude because I was burning away like mad before, and with some more burning I managed to reinflate my balloon and be on my way again. That was an interesting experience.

So I floated around admiring the views, outside and internally. The balloon looks quite nice and the physics of it are interesting when inflating and deflating. It looks a bit odd right at the top when you peek around the burner so avoid doing that. The balloon basket looks really nice, some good weaving there! And the sounds are pretty good, sounds like it should do. There’s two instruments; one for altitude and speed and another for air temperature inside the balloon. One of the instruments has buttons but are inop and I wonder what they would do IRL.

The controls are simple as one might expect, it’s just two burners with a main burn and whisper burn command each. There’s a default binding to turn on both main burners at the same time but the checklist says to only use one at a time, and to alternate which one you use so I didn’t use that command. ended up binding my own controls and that was a bit fiddly, at first they were just turning on and off rapidly but I got it working after poking around the settings. Dunno if there’s a binding for the parachute chord thing, didn’t really look.

I managed to run out of gas but my burners still worked. Dunno if that’s a visual bug with the gas cannister gauges being wrong or just a bug with the balloon itself.

After almost an hour of floating around, going where the wind took me, I decided to land. Problem is the wind was blowing me off towards a big hilly forrest, so I used my godly powers to turn the wind to blow me towards some fields. I let the air cool down and with some careful use of the parachute chord I managed to touch down in a field. It was a bit bumpy and I was dragged along to the edge of the field but we came to a stop just before a power pylon.

An interesting experience I’ve never had before. Quite relaxing in a way but I doubt I’ll ‘fly’ this much as it’s a bit too passive for me. Might be cool as a kind of interactive screen saver though with some occasional blasts of hot air to keep airbourne.

Guess I should try that other balloon with the little outboard motor as well.

And that was a lot of words about floating about the sky under a big sack of hot air!

My experience was similar to yours. I tried one flight at night which is not legal and stupid but it was still fun. At night it was sort of a sensory deprivation experience in the dark with no noise. It took me some time to figure out the keybinds. I’m going to try the other balloons shortly.

Is anyone having any issues with fuel? The longest flight I’ve managed so far was this morning; about 30 minutes with full fuel.

Also, none of the fuel gauges seemed to work at any point, and only two of the canisters actually provided fuel.

Other than these fuel issues, and a wonky vent cord, this balloon is my most unexpectedly fun aircraft in 2024 so far.

On Xbox the flames didn’t make any sound.

There seems to be two threads on this aircraft, or at least they have the same tags so it’s not easy to distinguish them. Are these just variants of each other?

The other one is https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/msfs2024-flydoo-hot-air-balloon/664531

I had the same issue as you with getting dragged across the ground in very light/non existent winds, to the point I decided to just start in the air instead. All in all, it’s quite relaxing and is about as exciting as just floating around could possibly be of course. If you really want to see it break, just lay on the burner handle and get your envelope scorching hot inside, then watch it generate a singularity. Somewhere in the guts of FS, a zero tries to get carried over with nowhere to go and physics explode until things cool down again. Great fun!

Hello @Aleo5069,

That thread is for the Flydoo balloon, which is a different aircraft from the basic hot air balloon.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

That’s true, however if I search the tag, they both said FlyDoo.

Scratch this, I’m dumb. On my fight this morning I rediscovered the Fuel Cross Flow valve and realized what it’s used for :see_no_evil:

I have no idea how to fly one of these but I mostly figured it out. Landing is tough. Not really sure the proper way to land, but I did manage to bring it down into a small open field and eventually stop. Balloon seemed to glitch around a bit when changing cameras and it would slightly wobble the basket before quickly settling back to normal. Otherwise is was kind of cool. Will need some more practice with it before I feel comfortable. I probably need to look up how these things are actually operated too.

Some folks here may remember the RDR2 mission that had a hot air balloon. I couldn’t help but think of that while I was flying. It was epic at the time, but to be able to take one of these up anywhere over the “real” world now and under much more realistic circumstances is amazing!

Where is that located in the balloon, and if you know, what is the binding? Thx

Above the pilot directly in between the two burners. Not sure if there’s a binding but you can use the mouse to open/close it.

How can I release the starter rope of the FlyDoo Balloon from the ground in 2024? Play via Xbox controller

If you want to attach/detach from the ground, use the parking brake. It creates a small rope connection between the basket and the ground. If you start cold/dark, you can make sure the rope is attached, and then start filling the balloon without fear of being dragged. Once you have a full envelope, you can hit the parking brake and be released from the ground and into the air.
