[MSFS2024] List of new VEXCEL areas (work in progress)

Hi,

There is no clear communication from MS or Asobo vs the new VEXCEL areas.
There was a quick map shown during presentation with no real details.

So far the new VEXCEL areas I found :

Most if not all are super detailed elevation, but colors are washed out, brown yellowish pretty often.

This is still a step below photogrametry, but several step better than generic landscape

  • USA :

    • Grand Canyon NP
    • Yosemite NP
    • Glacier NP
    • Yellowstone NP
    • Sequoia NP
    • Glenn Canyon South going to Grand Canyon
    • South Part of Monument Valley (though it looks weird on some, hybrid POI)
    • Mount Rainier NP (and Mount Adams)
    • Capitol Reef (average fidelity IMO, partial ? )
  • Europe :

    • French Alps from roughly Briancon to Sisteron (basically south/center and east of French Alps). Goes a little in Italy. Colors are washed out brown.
    • Lucerne/Lake Constance area
  • Japan :

To be found

  • Australia :

To be found

  • New Zealand :

To be found

  • Other part of the world not shown on the map ?

To be found

Can you report there the areas and I will maintain the first post

Thanks !

Glacier NP looks absolutely stunning!

Not sure if Sedona is using this VEXCEL, but it looks close to true life now.

Yellowstone NP

Will check it out

Edit : confirmed added to first post. Big wide Vexcel area there !

Sedona being a town, this would probably point out to photogrametry though…

East of Fresno, Sequoia NP also in Vexcel. Nice views. Still the same color issues though (washed out).

Looks like most of US National Park were scanned. I will continue to look for those (lucky to have done most of NP in West/Center). Will continue with Utah and Washington state

South of Glen Canyon also

South part of Monument Valley as well

Give me your opinion about Zion NP… Not 100% sure it is or only partially in a weird way…

Bryce Canyon NP (partially?).
Capital Reef NP.
Black Canyon NP (CO)
Southwest of Colorado
Rainier NP (Washington)
Denali NP (Alaska)

I checked Mt Rainier NP and Mount Adams, agreed looks stunning. Was there on vacations last summer.

Also did Capitol Reef and I confirm this is Vexcel. I would say Vexcel is still below photogrammetry though. Could not find some arches I hiked to in Capitol Reef…

Added to the list.

Let me check the rest

I will disagree for Denali NP I could not find any Vexcel area… Low (normal) definition from what I can see…

Folks, I have been looking at Japan for quite a bit now and no luck finding those new Vexcel areas…

I updated the first post with an approximate map shared by Asobo, but it is very approximate…

According to Aerial Imagery & Elevation Data of Japan | Vexcel Data Program

7.5cm res for a large part of Kanto?! And Osaka, Tokyama and Kanzawa, Sapporo? We should have an amazing Japan scenery to fly in now, but for Tokyo and Osaka its still the same data as it was in 2020. Japan was the first photogrammetry cities and with Tokyo being so large in size, its understandable that it was limited.

According to the VEXCEL site, we should have much larger coverage now. Here’s a very rough image of what Tokyo’s 23 wards would be (we have some photogrammetry inside the red line currently) but the VEXCEL shows coverage further out to Saitama, Kanagawa and Chiba (much further outside of the yellow line) which would be unbelievable if that was all included to 2024, but so far we don’t have anything. Also Osaka, which again I don’t see any change from 2020 there either.

Is it just me not seeing it? Or is this another promise yet to be fullfilled?

Edit - Perhaps we have it. It could be the bing-type ortho that is updated now, not TIN/photogrammetry I was thinking.

You are talking about TIN/Photogrammetry. You are right Tokyo is disapointing as only a small portion of the town is TIN/Photogrammetry, same since early 2020 days at FS2020 release.

Right now I would even say that TIN/Photogrammetry areas are worse than 2020 as resolution seems lower, building more deformed and all the trees are blobs, with additional 3D trees from 2024 sprouting everywhere with sometimes crazy huge size…

VEXCEL is for non urban areas (Countryside Aerials)

The ideal would be to have TIN/Photogrammetry everywhere of course, but probably not feasible right now vs amount of data/work involved. I believe they need to manually fine tune those areas. They clearly need an AI filter to recognize trees and remove them so we get rid of those green blobs. Then every time there is a green blob they need to replace it with a 3D tree with correct height…

Tried to spend some time in Australia, no luck as well…

What it points on their rough map is areas of existing TIN/Photogrammetry from FS2020, at least I think.

It’s kind of crazy they don’t share the full list of TIN/Photogrammetry areas and Vexcel… For TIN/Photogrammetry I have a link I use that is good but depends on someone updating it …

The area around Sedona (KSEZ) - Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness to the north and Munds Mountain Wilderness to the east - is improved from 2020, but at a cost.

With my graphics settings (listed below), and flying in clear skies, between 75-125 Mbps was continously being streamed to display the scenery shown in the two pics below. Both my RAM (32GB) & VRAM (16 GB) were 80 - 85% utilized. My Arc 770 was running at 100%, though my i7-12700K was only chugging along at around 25% capacity.

Graphics Tab for these shots: Full Screen; HDR: Off; Resolution: 3840 x 2160; AA: TAA; Render scaling: 70; AMD FidelityFX: 100; VSync: Off; FRL: N/A; Dynamic FRT: Off; TLOD: 400; OST Pre-Cache: Ultra; Disp. Map: On; Buildings: High; Trees, Plants, Rocks, Grass: Medium; OLD: 150; Clouds, Texture Res: Ultra; AF: 16x; TS: 2x2; Water: Medium; RayTracing: On; SM: 2048; TS: 1024; CS: High; WE, AO: Medium; CR: 256; RR: Medium; LS: Ultra; DoF, MB: Off, GCRR: High; CQ: Ultra; TAQ, AT, RT, ST: High.

Because I’m heavily GPU-bound at these settings, I can’t take off or land at the airport at Sedona. If I spawn there, my FPS tank to single digits on the apron and runway. Memory usage rises to close to 90% before the game CTDs. If I try to land, my FPS decreases on approach down to 5-8 FPS at touchdown, then the game CTDs.
Performance wise, MSFS 2020 on my PC is much better than 2024 in this area. I could, of course, reduce some of these settings to increase performance, but then one loses the improved visuals.

The game is definitely demanding at max settings in particular in those Vexcel areas.

I play maxed out at 8K DLSS Balanced or Performance with a 4090 /7800X3D/64Go DDR-6000 CL30 and those areas need FG (frame generation) to be smooth enough, even if most of the time my CPU is the bottleneck… Trying to get a 9800X3D but hard to find and only 10-15% faster…

Not the case, as we see on the VEXCEL site for Japan it is ‘Urban’ and Ortho / DSM data-

I do see the aerial imagery for Japanese cities as shown on the VEXCEL site to be updated in 2024. Also the building heights have been changed but some areas I am very familiar with show some tall buildings as no longer being tall or buildings showing up within stadiums! So its seems the data isn’t quite perfect, yet.

Toyama City example, 2020 -

2024-

The countries shown on the VEXCEL site show the areas that MS have taken into 2024. Just see the corresponding VEXCEL map for each country, like the one in my previous post.
