My biggest regret about purchasing the PMDG-737-600

There are not many liveries available. What’s on flightsim.to is pretty lean compared to the other 737s. Don’t get me wrong I’m completely happy with my purchase and love the plane. I bought it because I like the shorter version, landing on smaller runways and the price. But it didn’t dawn on me it wouldn’t be a big seller therefore not many livery developers. Even marketplace developers won’t make them because it’s not a profit maker. If you’re on Xbox you’re even more screwed cuz PMDG only has 2 packages for a total of 18 planes. So even PMDG is screwing you. Oh well.

I own the 800 as well as the 600.

The 600 wasn’t a big seller, therefore the liveries choice is going to be much smaller than the 800. I knew that before I bought it, but the Westjet skin was available for the 600, so I was good with that.

The 800 is definitely the most popular version of the plane.

no, pmdg isnt screwing anyone. if you read their forums, they tried to bring the best value they could to the xbox crowd within the constraints of the msfs marketplace.

" We are slowly working through the approvals process with liveries for the PMDG DC-6, PMDG 737-700 and PMDG 737-800 for Xbox.

While we work our way through this process, it has been necessary to be intentionally vague about precisely what the final iteration will look like for you, our Xbox customers. I wanted to call this out specifically in order to minimize repetitive questions or run-away concerns about what our mission goals are, here.

To recap for those who are new to the discussion: Twenty years ago, PMDG broke from the sim dev community norm of charging for liveries. For two decades (quite literally, almost to the day) we have made liveries for our products available to you at no cost. Our intention is that this should carry forward for the next two decades as well. However, when we prepped the first group of liveries for release into Microsoft Marketplace, we discovered that we had missed a critical piece of information; The minimum price for anything in Marketplace is $4.99.

We pivoted from this error and and prepared a livery package for each of the DC-6, 737 and 738 products- only to discover that we were exceeding gross file size limitations for distribution on Marketplace. At the time this happened, Microsoft reached out with some helpful hints that we followed, but which were not currently documented in the SDK. This next submission was rejected for other reasons, and thus began an in depth and busy exchange of ideas/tests/help between Microsoft and PMDG during which we found a few new corners for the distribution system.

Without getting into technical details, because they are not important to the point, we are effectively trying to force the livery process to do more than was anticipated and this is causing some hiccups.

We have been working hand-in-glove with Microsoft in order to work through the remaining corner cases in order to get the full suite of liveries released for the DC-6, 737 and 738. We are relatively certain what the layout will look like, what it will cost and how it will roll out- but we have hit unexpected obstacles a couple of times already so:

Rather than getting out ahead of our skiis and accidentally misinforming you - we are quite literally not telling you what we expect the final process to look like because we want a chance to go through all of it with Microsoft to be certain we have it right- and they will approve what we are giving them.

So please sit tight and we will get information to you as quickly as we have it. Hopefully within the week.

A few folks have pointed to X or Y developer and said “just do that” but again- we are pushing the limits on the methods available- and it is causing problems that have to be resolved product-side with Microsoft’s assistance. They are being incredibly helpful through this process as we run into a few unexpected knee-knockers together.

We anticipate that a package of 10 liveries for the PMDG DC-6 will appear in marketplace this weekend- and others will start to flow in next week or the week after depending upon how some of the testing/checking/evaluating goes this week.

Sorry for the obtuse approach- but I feel it is better to be slow with information that is correct than to constantly change the details due to factors we didn’t anticipate."

" PMDG 737 for MSFS: Xbox Liveries:
We were happy to see that the last round of cooperation between PMDG and Microsoft in order to leverage some currently undocumented functionality of Marketplace distribution process worked- and that un-stuck the process of publishing liveries for Xbox users. We have a ton of livery packs currently going through intake that we are hoping to see released in this coming week, and then a bunch more that are going into intake on Monday/Tuesday for release likely the following week. We are still exploring ways to minimize user cost for liveries on Xbox, but we need to get them into marketplace effectively before we can start working on that aspect of the process. One step at a time, and we are in good communication with Microsoft to ensure we partner with them in a manner that is beneficial to them and our customers. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available, but you should start seeing more liveries for the 737-700, 737-800 and DC-6 late this week? (always an asterisk when talking about MS Marketplace timetables since we don’t control them!)"

24july 2023:
" PMDG 737 and DC-6 Liveries:
We continue to push more packages of liveries for the DC-6/737 product lines through the marketplace intake process. I have read some folks who are upset that we have the audacity to charge $0.50/livery in packages of 10. This was not our choice. It is the only way to get the liveries fully available to MSFS Xbox users- and we don’t have any way to make liveries available to Xbox users except to move them through the existing channel of Marketplace. For those simming on PC, liveries remain free to you via the PMDG Operations Center.

PMDG have made a strong commitment to support the Xbox community and welcome them to the PMDG family. While we continue to look for even more cost effective ways to provide access to liveries- we will work with Microsoft and the distribution mechanism to get the best value we can for that part of our customer family."

only 69 737-600s were sold, compared to 5116 -800s (the highest selling segment of the family). very few carriers flew the -600 (comparable in sales & proportions to the 747SP) . thus, youll find few liveries.

if you dont look at anything other than the cockpit view, however, the -600 is a bargain being the cheapest in the range and offering pretty much the same experience as the others.

I own the 700, but frankly, I could not care less how many liveries are available. I fly the plane daily, and for that I sit in the virtual cockpit (from which you can barely see the wing tips).

With my short drone flight after landing, I usually check out the arrival airport, not my livery.

But that‘s just me.
Have you checked out Flightsim.to? Maybe you can find 600 liveries there…

You have this backwards. There’s not many liveries available for the 737-600 because there aren’t many -600 liveries operating in the real-world.

Totally agree with you there. I just want all the liveries available for Xbox that are available for PC users. Right now they’re only two packages for the 600 with nine liveries in each. The operation center has way more. Unless I’m missing something here. I actually run it on the PC now but was thinking of getting the Xbox series X. So only two packages for the 600 and at least 4 for the others.

Let’s not be touchy here :slightly_smiling_face: I didn’t mean it in a mean way. What I’m saying is the 600 only has 2 packages available in the marketplace (And they’re not all the liveries available in the ops center for pc users) while the others have 4 or more. This is where I feel I’m getting screwed a bit. Or am I missing something here cuz you comment was a little TLDR. And why is it someone like 4simmers can put out a package if 50 or so liveries in one package and sell them for $1.99 while PMDG sells them $4.99 for 10. It’s hard to feel this isn’t a money grab. PMDGs liveries ain’t that pretty.

a lot of nuance is lost on the internet, so it was easy to read you comment as it was written, lol.

i know my post was long. it was really 3 separate announcements given by robert randrazzo regarding the livery situation on XBOX

i suspect that the number of liveries included in each pack is limited perhaps by how pmdg handles liveries. this is a complete guess on my part however. but unlike any other aircraft ive seen in msfs, PMDG allows you to save equipment options and panel states tied to the liverythus, you could set up an older aircraft with equipment from early production runs, while a later era livery could be set up with its period-correct equipment, or older components blanked off

if youre not familiar, i suggest watching the following. the second video is something i wish was more common across flight simming in general:

i really like jumping into an aircraft with everything preset to just how i like it…all the lighting as i want, all the displays configured the way i like, so on and so forth

I take offense to that comment. Did we promise you any liveries that we did not deliver?

You write you did not realize that it was not a very widely used aircraft but still accuse us of screwing you. That’s not very polite.

Unfortunately that will never happen unless 3rd party free sites are allowed access to Xbox which will never happen as Microsoft is very protective (and for good reason) of the Xbox architecture. Be very thankful that Microsoft even allowed WASM to have access.

Yes you did. I waited till the PMDG was available to purchase on the marketplace place and I asked on the PMDG forum if I will get everything in this version that was available with the purchase on the site and I was told yes. On the PC version I can install all the liveries that are available in the ops center. I expected all of those liveries to be available on Xbox (even though I knew it would cost me). But they are not. There are only 2 packages with 9 or 10 in each available in the marketplace. So all those liveries are not available on Xbox. No Battleship grey United, or Southwest and others. Where are those? I was also told I would be able to update the plane via the ops center to get updates before the marketplace updates. There has yet to be one update available that way. So feel however offended you want to feel.

while its true the ops center gets updates sooner than marketplace, the ops center doesnt work for marketplace purchases

correction, maybe: it seems there may be a newer version of ops center that supports marketplace folks. i unno, i prefer not to use marketplace. see this thread:

https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/pmdg-dc-6-cloudmaster-forum/160027-01feb22-operations-center-for-marketplace-users-released

And I was told it would.

As others have noted, there’s no shortage of free PMDG 737-600 liveries available at flightsim.to - 18 pages’ worth, in fact. Unless you’re a stickler for current operators only, you have plenty of options, including some classic retro liveries (the 737-600 is a good match for the performance of the -100 and -200 - which means it’s a little rocket - by far my favorite NG variant).

Can’t see that there’s much cause for complaint - but of course, mileage my vary.

It’s just harder to find things. There are no Spirit liveries, a certain TWA livery I like and some others that are pretty easy to find for the other 737s. That’s all I’m saying.

lots of artists out there filling those gaps. this guy does great work, and quick. he made a livery i requested for the MU2, and had it done within a few days

also, contacting creators directly on flightsim.to who already made -600 liveries is another avenue to get what you want

Sorry, I accidentally quoted you and not OP’s post. Fixed.

deleted mine as its no longer relevant. cheers!

Whoever told you that can not have been a PMDG staff member. They knew from the start that OC2 would never be possible on XBOX and always stated that there would be ways through XBOX and the marketplace. MP customers on PC can take advantage of their system and use OC2 for livery downloads and livery updates. aircraft updates have to go through marketplace due to the encryption. This has never been communicated otherwise.

Regarding the liveries I don’t know what is available for Xbox and what not but they seem to have selected the most popular liveries. The problem with providing them is that MS insists on this ridiculous rule that addon uploads that are available for both platforms must have the same content. I mean, let’s not BS ourselves, they are not anyway. XBox is a locked up system, PMDG have done a huge effort to make it equal but currently they can’t update to the same version since it won’t work on XBox. But they still want to give everyone the opportunity to use all the liveries. Again it’s MS who disturbs, you can’t provide free addons to a payware addon but have to ask for 4,99. At the same time there seems to be a data limit. So they had to split the liveries up. That’s absolutely hilarious if you think about it but that’s what you get with MS’ vision of an equal platform lol. But if PMDG had included all the liveries to the initial download it would have become HUGE, for PC users too. Not a good way to make friends either. XBOX is a problem child for a game of this sort and using it will always come with compromises. Be happy that PMDG even took the effort to bring their planes onto XBOX. If it was me I would have shrugged it off with all the problems and moved on to new projects.

But of course… I don’t intend to stop you from being angry. =)
