Navigraph acquires Simbrief

Wow, I have read some vehement personal attacks before, but this one has some real thought behind it. Nicely done.

The link with the facts has been posted twice in this thread in an attempt to share the “insider” information provided to the current Navigraph subscribers, Facebook users and any one else actually interested in learning something about a subject prior to passing judgement.

Interesting choice of argument. Pretty sure the OP didn’t address their post to you, and yet, here we are.

yes, I have nothing against contributing voluntarily, but aviation is a dream for many people! it is often reserved for a world of wealthy people, but let the most modest people have access to it, to fulfill their dreams or their passion. When a rare good service is free, and accessible to everyone, why make it paying?
There is nothing to stop the wealthy from contributing by making donations. Why not in exchange for bonuses.
But on the other hand, what’s the use of modest people dreaming of inaccessible things…

I have only sporadically used SimBrief over the years. LittleNavMap has come leaps and bounds. They also have some Navigraph Integration but I find it clunky. As a Navigraph subscriber, I will give SimBrief another shot once they have their integration ironed out.

I do not see how you could think that I objected to your subjective opinion because you did not, for example, state that you were acting on behalf of Navigraph.

I cannot confirm or deny that that, but even if they did - do I need to be so compliant, naive or stupid on this forum to get on my knees and swear I believe everything posted?

And I do not share your belief . if that is allowed on this forum.
:upside_down_face:

How is my opinion subjective when Navigraph have said it will remain free? All I said was it may not remain free forever. I don’t work for or speak for Navigraph, I have a subscription but that is all.

The flight sim community isn’t only MSFS, there are other flight sims that benefit from Simbrief. The flight sim community have a great track record of creating tools for us simmers to use, I’m not sure why you’re being so pessimistic?

Navigraph acquires SimBrief

Navigraph, the flight simulation community’s trusted source for updated charts and navigational data, today announced that it has acquired SimBrief, the flight simulation community’s most popular flight planning software.

The acquisition is a natural progression of the already close collaboration between Navigraph and SimBrief. It builds on the integration between the two platforms existing since 2013 and provides the ability to do flight planning using up to date navigational data.

SimBrief’s flight planning functionality will continue to be free. Users who want to use the most current navigational data can subscribe to Navigraph and unlock the AIRAC cycles in SimBrief, as before.

“SimBrief founder Derek has done an outstanding job creating a flight planning service which the flight simulation community loves.” says Magnus Axholt, CEO and co-founder of Navigraph. “We plan to integrate SimBrief and Navigraph even further and enable additional functionality to SimBrief using the data and resources Navigraph has available.”

"Derek will play a key role as we develop some of the features in the next generation Navigraph Charts product. With the powerful combination of his real world aviation background and software development experience, Derek is a very welcome member of our skilled and multi-disciplinary Navigraph Development Team.

“We shall make SimBrief’s flight planning functionality even more accessible to developers in the community by structuring the SimBrief API together with Navigraph APIs in the upcoming Navigraph Developer Portal.” Magnus summarizes.

“Navigraph has been a strong SimBrief supporter from the very beginning.” Derek adds. “I have always enjoyed working with them to improve the integration between the two services. This very much feels like a natural progression, and I am excited to be a part of the team going forward.”

He goes on to say, “I’m confident that Navigraph’s resources and experienced development team will not only help ensure that SimBrief remains available to the community for years to come, but also make for some exciting new features and improvements that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.”

“I have been both humbled and incredibly grateful for the support the community has shown me since I launched SimBrief nearly eight years ago, and I’m looking forward to this next chapter in SimBrief’s development.” says Derek in closing.

SimBrief will continue to operate under the name SimBrief, but with the tag line “by Navigraph”.

All for now,
The Navigraph Development Team

It’s not wrong for someone to speculate that in the future navigraph will decide to start charging. Companies do lie all the time. Personally I believe they will move to a trimmed down free flight planning service then offer a premium subscription that fully integrates both products. Only speculation though take it with a grain of salt.

Well I’d just like to say thank you for the post and heads up :grinning:

No idea where you’re getting this from… Most users use both in conjunction. The services were in no way competing with one another. What you said is like saying peanut butter and jelly are in direct competition. When in reality their use case can be individual to one another, or in cohesion with one another, but never as a replacement for one another.

So long as they keep simbrief (dispatch) free for the avg user then I’m happy. That being said I’m kinda glad to see the acquisition. Hopefully this means that we’re gonna see measures that streamline the flight planning and navigation process even more.

Yea I do believe this is a very positive piece of news for the flight sim community. Only good things can come of this acquisition

First, it has always been free- we were lucky. Second, if the owner wanted to sell it, it’s his choice. Third, if someone else wants to build and maintain a flight planning tool online for free, then they’re more than welcome to do so. I have no criticisms here. People invest a lot of time and money into building things for the sim- I’m happy support quality work from reputable developers.

Yes exactly
Ask how many flight simmers use Fsuipc for example without donating to a brilliant developer !

Now if Navigraph could hurry up on VFR charts that would be dandy. That’s like the one major thing that I’m most excited for from them. But its taking sooooo looooong.

Could well be that without this acquisition, simbrief would have seized operation at some point since revenue from website ads mostly don’t even cover hosting costs.

So there’s at least that positive side, that there is now a financially stronger company behind it.

I’m pretty sure they will improve the integration which will lead to more and more locations where you’ll have a benefit if you are a Navigraph subscriber - even now there are the AIRAC cycles supported in simbrief if you are subscribed.

We’ll see  no need to rip each other’s heads off discussing something nobody can predict.

Been here long enough to know that they eventually grow back.

They bought them to kill the competition, IMO. It happens all the time in business. I don’t see any way that Navigraph has anything else to gain with this move. Sad.

Simbrief never was a competition to Navigraph. If anything, they even supported additional subscriptions for the AIRAC data.

I concur. Best to just take in information as it comes to us. I think the arguing that occured in this thread came from people that had genuine concerns regarding the implications of such an acquisition as opposed to any malice. Merely as a result of varied points of views and ideals.

Tbh Like everything else in life nobody actually knows whats gonna happen long term. So IMO the best to do is just make light of the situation, find the positives in it and take it day by day. Something negative could happen, but if it does then we’ll get around it as individuals and as a community. Like someone else said, alternatives could be made, in business competition is key.

I hope you are right, but tell me what value does SB bring to NG? I think most USA simmers use SB alongside SkyVector for charts.
