Yup thats the window, if you click on network, it should show you how much traffic is flowing just for the sim and where the sim is connecting to. then take the addresses for the connected address and do a ping plotter on them and you should be able to tell where the bottleneck lies…
Network traffic? Talking about RAM here, aren’t we? @hobanagerik
Anyone have a little more “grain” on the desktop image with the last drivers?
Yes, I made no reference to network traffic.
No but @BubbaBlitz7348 did. I’m so confused haha. I think we got a case of crossed wires…
Ah, yes, so he did. ![]()
Network traffic never factored in to this discussion as far as I know, stemming from your post I think about the sim using 14GB, but more likely 14GB total usage with MSFS using a good chunk of that.
Your image shows nearly 11GB used, and 9.2GB of that is MSFS.
Haaha sorry it was late and Im old, still applies though, you can just disregard the network stuff.
a note: and in the “Hard Faults” you will see what @hobanagerik meant if mention is good to upgrade to 32GB. Hard-Faults is, if the OS must use the pagefile ( simple sayd ) which of course slow-down all a lot.
And you can also see, that MSFS requests ~9GIG memory , in TaskManager you see only the ~4.5Gig. Memory consume depends of course on resolution, used mods, etc..
I don’t really fully understand this. If there is free physical RAM all the time, why is it using my pagefile so often?
What is the difference between “Commit” and “Working Set”?
But even with 9gb that’s still only just over half my physical RAM available.
A higher Screen Resolution would only require more VRAM, wouldn’t it?
Sadly I cannot upgrade my device.
I not know the exact algorithm why and when windows decide to use pagefile. Its necessary for a lot of things.. Of course like “offer virtual memory” , or used the clean memory fraqmentation, .. also older blocks are moved out of the RAM, and on. The OS also not assume that there is a single application running and try to safe physical RAM ( it shifts blocks back and forth as the applications need it ).
Working vs Commit we can simplify as " currently in RAM used" vs “promised , but must not neccessarly sit in physical RAM” ( and with lower amount of RAM, this very often mean : it is reserved in pagefile ). The OS just guarantee that the commited memory is accessable. So, commited is summary of reserved and used, where reserved can (but not must) be part of pagefile ( it’s all virtual ).
Related to 4K is also often more RAM consumed ( as example more data loaded into the RAM for faster accessing ). Of course it depends on other factors too ( details level, etc ) and mainly you need sufficent vram, but my experiance is that the apps consume more RAM if you go to 4K.
Hard-Faults exist everwhere,.. it is only an idicator and we see, that it reach on your system also the 0. But just have in mind, that RAM is not endless and pageing is used - you see in the diagramm “commit charge” that you overall usage is currently ~75% , which is not less ( same you see in Taskmanager memory view as numbers ). Therefore, in special in ages of SSD ensure that there is allways enought free disc space left ( 25% and more ) so that the ssd can work efficent. Together with paging I assume you are ok with 16gig for a while ![]()
Thanks for the detailed reply. Still trying to understand more.
I am running at the native screen resolution of 2560x1600 and 100% scaling in game. Would it help to lower this actually in Windows itself? Or in the game set a lower render resolution but keep GUI resolution native perhaps?
I’m using a OneXPlayer 1S (hand held PC, just 8.4 inch screen) with an eGPU (RTX2070) over Thunderbolt. Since purchasing the eGPU, seems like using native res doesn’t really lower the FPS and I want to push the Graphics as much as possible to help Main Thread keep up, but if it helps the system ram situation I’d do it, even if it don’t look as good!
Do I need to remove current drivers beforehand and then install the clean version or can I just install the clean version on it?
Hi @Baracus250 ..
before you start try to optimize things about RAM usage, I would like ask whether you notice issues related to the pagefile usage ? Did you notice stuffers where you think its because “loading of somewhat” ? I mean, if you not notice issues I personaly would not think about toooooo much
…
Also, I not assume that render resolution will safe much RAM, more the combination of resolution and some kind of detail settings ( and thought I read that you already in middle-area ). For me is the 2070 good for WQHD and if you not set all settings to ultra, the 16GIG should be ok. Much more important might be that users aware that a Browser can easily eat some Gigabyte of RAM, etc. and that you have with 16gig less “buffer” to let run applications in parallel to a “high demanding app/game”.
Also, dont forget: reserved memory is not used memory. May be the additional reserved memory is never used. What I would do in case I know that each time eg. minimum 8gig pagefile is necessary is to set these manually as the minimum size. But, as long as enough free disc space is left, windows can manage this also fine with System-Managed setting.
PS: OneXPlayer 1S.. some times I ask me, why I have here such a PC monster under my desk ![]()
Hi Micha, thank you for the reply.
I have definitely had more “long freezes” since the last Sim Update. I am unsure if this is because of the pagefile or something else but as I wrote before in a similar thread somewhere, the freezes happen in EXACTLY the same places consistently so it seems like something in the world causing it rather than swapping of memory blocks as it is literally the same every time (for example doing laps of Mach Loop).
I always close other apps. I have just FS Realistic running, Elgato Streamdeck software, sometimes Kinetic Assistant if I am gliding, obviously Steam client and Windows Defender. But often depending where I fly, it’s smooth - so again it points to something in the world causing it rather than ram being filled.
No - mainly High, some Medium, Glass Refresh Low. Only Terrain Caching in Ultra as I thought that should help in fact (I have 8gb VRAM).
I guess I could try same scenario with Low settings but I have done this at Mach Loop with NO MODS and it was still exactly the same so it’s something in the core game causing it IMO.
I have manually set my pagefile with 8gb - 20gb I think (not on PC now to check, will double check it later). I have 100gb free on the C drive (NVME SSD 500gb partition of a 1TB module).
Haha - well, I am seriously considering getting a “proper computer” but want to see what the next gen CPU will bring (and prices!) before I do. To be fair with the eGPU this little thing is absolutely amazing what it can do. Even with the internal Intel XE for some games it is incredible - 60fps on older titles not a problem and a really nice clear screen. So nice to sit in bed flying with it after working on a desk all day! I just want to make it as it was before the last sim updates again! It was perfect so I am sure it’s the Software causing this stuff.
Thanks again for your help
also not sure whether these reported stutters in some areas are pagefile related.. may be not. One time I had can also reproduce that, then again not. Can be also server stuff..
With 100gig free disc space it was good choice to choose a manuall pagefile. ( If I assume the other 500gig from these 1TB are used too, the free disc space is already in range where you should think about clean-up somewhat. If you intressting about why recommendation for free-disc-space in ssd is, you can search for topics like ssd overprovisoning, etc. ). And, may be you can increase the pagefile to min/max: 12/25 gig.
that I meant .. and with 700W less ![]()
But, we should may be not go to far away from the topic about the nvidia driver ![]()
New driver today 516.59 really is an improvement for me.

Im a bit concerned (as I have mentioned in another thread too). Banding in clouds since latest driver, and also reintroduced CTD’s. Could be cause of AMD chipset driver too of course, since new was released and installed. So, the latest GPU driver from Nvidia is not really a 5 for me.
Here is the cleaned version of the Nvidia driver 516.59
Fixed Issues
- [Red Dead Redemption][Vulkan]: Some objects may flicker when player is indoors.
- [OpenGL] Minecraft Java Edition may display artifacts when using Optifine shaders.
- [OpenGL] Artifacts may appear in Second Life when connecting using third party viewers.
- [Neverwinter Nights] Light sources not rendering correctly.
- [Vulkan] Path of Exile displays flashing black textures.
- [G-SYNC] Games may stutter when bringing up the Xbox app overlay.
- [UE5] General UE5 stability improvements.
Open Issues
- [NVIDIA Ampere GPU]: With the GPU connected to an HDMI 2.1 audio/video receiver, audio may drop out when playing back Dolby Atmos.
- [RTX 30 series] PC monitor may not wake from display sleep when GPU is also connected to an HDMI 2.1 TV, and the TV is powered off.
- Toggling HDR on and off in-game causes game stability issues when non-native resolution is used.
- Videos played back in Microsoft Edge may appear green if NVIDIA Image Scaling is enabled upon resuming from hibernate or booting with fastboot.
- [DirectX 12] Shadowplay recordings may appear over exposed when Use HDR is enabled from the Windows display settings.
- Monitor may briefly flicker on waking from display sleep if DSR/DLDSR is enabled.
- [Jurassic World Evolution 2][Microsoft Store] Artifacts may appear in game.
- [Prepar3D] Light sources display flashing black boxes.
- [MSI GE66 Raider 10UG/MSI GE76 Raider 10UH] Windows brightness setting does not work when notebook is in dedicated GPU mode.
- [Destiny 2] Game may randomly freeze after launching game or during gameplay.
Charles.
Could be the latest AMD Chipset too though. Someone said you should not install over current drivers, but ininstall these first and then install the chipset drivers. Not sure whats working really…
RTX 3060 Ti
Just installed 516.59 and have had 3 CTD’s while trying to boot FS. On 4th attempt and after a windows reboot, I got in to FS. This is the most CTDs I’ve seen with a Nvidia driver update so far, will go test out with a flight and see if it stabilises.
