New Plane announcement - Junkers Ju 52

You can’t really compare the Ju-52 with the Trimotor or the DC-3.

All three show the great advance in aircraft design in these early years.

A quick comparison;
Trimotor 1926 ~115kts
Ju-52 1932 ~ 155kts
DC-3 1935 ~200kts

The question now will be…

Will we get the float version?

They mentioned 3 different variants on the Twitch stream…
Based on the great work Oliver has done before, I’m assuming one is the modern cockpit variant, another the original cockpit variant (Oliver made this for XP), and perhaps this as the 3rd variant?

Cheers,
Rob

Its not confirmed, but it seems like most of the smaller planes will get skies on snow, and the possibility to land on water.
Jurg was talking about this in the latest Xbox showcase

I’m surprised you have to make comparisons at all.

Here in Germany, the Ju is known even to people who don’t know much about planes at all.

Pretty possible, Jorg was really excited about floatplanes in general.
Th other two variants will be different engines, Pratt&Whitney and BMW.

Hopefully the BMW will have original cockpit, and the PW the new cockpit shown.

I dont care that much about that, but i just hope they get the sound right. And it seems to be, as the Audio team is recording from the real engines as Jorg mentioned. This will be awesome

So I just found out that Oliver’s XP version did include the seaplane variant. Let’s hope that comes to MSFS! Would love to fly some old Norwegian routes in it.

If they don’t, I will!

Ah yes, thanks for the correction!

Development (small airliner) and usage (military transport for passengers, freight and paratroopers) during WW2 make them comparable in many respects. The DC-3 is more modern and sophisticated while the Ju-52 is more rugged and can land almost anywhere.

All three are way pre-WWII (1939-1945)

That would be a great variant to have, the sim is set in the modern world after-all. That EHSI provides a lot of functionality styled like a steam gauge.

Correct. But it was the war that saw highest production numbers. In contrast to the DC-3, the Ju was developed with military duties and STOL capabilities in mind. As an airliner it was practically obsolete by 1938, when all major European airlines had switched to the faster and more economical DC-3. During the war the Ju’s old-fashioned design, ability to land on short and rough dirt and grass strips and easy convertibility made her well suited for military use.

Some were rebuilt without it I believe. I could be mistaken, but I think that is right.

Yes please! We want the original cockpit with the original engines. Pure love!
… and a Messerschmitt 109 to escort it in Multiplayer. I can already see those pesky FI Spitfires all over it

In 2018 there was a fatal incident of a JU52 here in Switzerland. It was one of the worst incidents in the last years, 20 peoples lost their lives, no one survived. :frowning:

For the ones interested in accident reports, to learn something out of it, i tought i share this story with you. It shows the difficulties in mountain flying and that something bad can happen at any time. When flying in the mountains, you need to be very carefull and always have room for a “Plan B”. Unfortunately, this was not the case here.

Here is a video explaining what went wrong:

And here are the final seconds of the crash, the plane went straight in to the ground:

Very interesting, thanks for sharing - I somehow completely missed the announcement.

I own the X-Plane version and I have a feeling the one in MSFS is going to at the very least look better - if it maintains the systems and variants we’re in for a treat.

Very very tragic… just shows that no pilot, no matter what age and / or experience is immune to making (glaring) mistakes.

BTW. One of the best accidents reports I have read - this one is really extensive and thorough.

I am approaching about 1.000hrs in flying in the Alps of which quite a few during Foehn / Mistral… one get`s great respect from the unpredictability of downdrafts, turbulences in such conditions and their severity. Personally I would have never flown that route the JU followed but rather along the ridges and at excess speed… but hey I am not immune to mistakes as well and had plenty of situation in the Alps which got my attention very very quickly.

On a side note, MS2020 greatly under represents turbulences and downdrafts especially in mountainous terrain.

But I am getting off topic … looking forward to the JU and hope it is decently modeled and at great enough detail, so one can enjoy the intricacies of such a historic plane.

Fly safe…
