Just tried the Miss Helen, its so beautiful <3, Cant wait until you do https://www.aircraftrestorationcompany.com/ferocious-frankie (100% not a hint, 100% is a hint) haha
Just purchased this thing, and the flight model is terrible. Ground handling is very bizarre, differential braking is ineffective unless the tailwheel is unlocked, and when the tail comes up on takeoff it starts wildly swinging around, which is pretty much opposite of what a real life taildragger does. Level flight at idle the thing barely decelerates. Iâm on Modern FM, everything else on hard.
As a real life pilot and RV8 owner, Iâm very disappointed. Waste of 35 bucks.
Agree with some of your points, including that differential braking is not working properly. Itâs an MSFS shortcoming. The problem exists with the Spitfires and others. In all cases, you should be able to be almost stationary and do a full turn with one main wheel locked. However, the point of a locked tailwheel is to STOP you from turning (the tail). That is the reason why a Spitfire with a free-castoring tail wheel is more of a beast on take-off.
is it any camera configuration to decrease the fish eye effect when you look around in the cockpit? it feels to much exagerated in this bird than the others. i use Track ir
You can overcome the locking tailwheel with differential braking, but I can live with this as itâs minor.
The absolutely wild yaw tendencies once the tail starts flying is ridiculous, as this is exactly opposite of how real taildraggers work. Taildraggers in MSFS can work just fine, Iâm currently beta testing one where they did a very nice job with it. I feel like these developers go all in on the eye candy, and the FMs are just an afterthought. A real shame.
The drag on that giant 4 bladed prop is clearly not modeled at idle.
I made a little mod for the P-51D. Regarding the sound part of the mod you have to read carefully, as I provide only the template, you have to have the sound files (legacy) or the Asobo reno P51D.
The Package/Zip contains several Mods, that can be installed individually. Choose only the ones, you want to have active and drag the respective mod folders to your community folder or activate them via MSFS Addon Linker.
Mods:
- Clean Glass Mod - no dirt and scratches on the canopy
- Props Blur Mod - higher prop blur transparency value
- Flight Model Mod - corrected gear drag and slightly modified drag/inertia/elevator trim effectivnes values ( without the corrected gear drag it is very hard to hold the speed at approach. Also credits at this point to Stinger18SOS on the fs forums for his numbers on these parameters.
- Turn/Slip Coordinator Fix Mod - fixes Vars in the panel.xml, so that the turn/slip coordinator works correct (the vars are simply switched in the original panel.xml)
- Asobo P51D Sound Mod - replaces the AH P51D sound with the sound of the asosbo reno p51d! IMPORTANT!!!: due to copyrights, this mod only provides you the template. you have to copy the file âAsobo_P51D_Reno_Common.PC.PCKâ from the folder\Official\Steam (or OneStore)\Asobo-aircraft-p51d-reno-common\SimObjects\Airplanes\Asobo_P51D_Reno_Common\sound location to the sound folder in the mod template. you don´t have to update the layout.json
- TSS P-51D Legacy Sound Pack Mod - replaces the AH P51D engine sound with the legacy sound from the TSS P-51D Sound Package. IMPORTANT!!!: due to copyrights, this mod only provides you the template. you have to copy the files from the TSS P-51D sound folder (.wav files and sound.cfg) to the sound folder in the mod template. you don´t have to update the layout.json. You can also use the template with other legacy engine sounds. Just copy the legacy sound files (.wav files and sound.cfg) into the sound folder of the mod template. IF you don´t use TSS sound pack, you have to update the layout.json. You can use the MSFSLayoutGenerator, available here - GitHub - HughesMDflyer4/MSFSLayoutGenerator: A drag-and-drop application for updating layout.json files in Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) packages.
You can see/hear the mod in this short video (german):

I think it could be worthwhile you reading the manual and checking out some videos of P51 ground handling - how the tailwheel mechanism works and when and how to lock/unlock it, rather than fighting it with differential braking.
Another thing I noticed, and I canât recall if it has been this way since launch, but the tailwheel only seems to swivel when turning to the left. Turning right it stays locked.
For me the tailwheel works in all directions as it should. Please be aware, that as soon as you pull the stick 40% back the tailwheel locks, so unlock the tailwheel and make steering tries without pulling on the stick at all, just to be sure it doesnt lock while you are steering.
Oh I fully understand locking tailwheels, Iâm saying that differential braking should still overcome it. But again, thatâs a minor quip.
The flight model is hot garbage. Thatâs my biggest gripe.
I agree about the flight model.
It âworksâ in all directions as in I can turn just fine, but the animation of the tailwheel only works when turning left. Turning right it just stays centered even though the plane is steering fine with my rudder inputs.
Ok, then I missunderstood you, sorry.
indeed, the animation goes only in one direction.
In the meantime, a new paint to explore Australia:

Any chance of shiny metallic textures like the FI Spifire, or is there some limitation with the AH texture palete? Just watched Kermie Weeksâ Cripes AâMighty.
Thank you for confirming!
There is no real limitation as far as I can see, but I find very shiny metallic textures a) not very nice to see; b) difficult to get right in the sim
I did MIss Helen:

which was pretty shiny for me, not sure if I want it even more shiny
Youâre the man! Excellent mod! Thank you!
Firstly, thank you for all your great repaints - especially your latest ones for the P51. I do have Miss Helen.
I guess itâs a matter of personal preference, but do understand if itâs difficult to accomplish. Itâs just that having been up close to the RL Silver Spit and a couple of restored P51s (+ Kermie Weeks YouTube walkaround), I thought a similar restoration finish would be nice to have. Thanks again Jan Kees.
Youâre welcome to my paints.
Very shiny is not that difficult to accomplish, but a bit tricky to get right.
But apart from that, my interest is in WW2 aircraft, the ones in which young guys risked their lives for the sake of others, and less in millionaires toys, although I can see how being able to fly in the sim what you can see in real life can have its charm. So maybe later?
For now, hereâs my next Mustang paint, coming soon:
