Okay Iām sure I sound like an idiot, but Iāll ask anyway. I havenāt flown this one in a minute, and I tried again in FS24. I cannot figure this warbird out.
I set MP to 40, I dance on the rudder and keep it (sort of ) straight. But it feels like the P-51 doesnāt ever actually want to leave the ground. If I can get it up in the air, it feels like itās just a few knots from falling out of the sky no matter what the airspeed is. Any slightly wrong input also makes it fall to earth like a meteor.
I suspect Iām just bad at this, but has anyone had a lot of difficulty with this one??
Edit: this happens in FS20 as well.
I have the same issueā¦
Itās very strange, isnāt it? Iām trying not to gaslight myself into thinking itās normal. It doesnāt feel right at all.
Although it remains a significant challenge to take off smoothly, it can now be done with this addon.
Suggestions:
- Practice in zero winds conditions, clean no external load, AND ZERO fuel in CENTER TANK, to establish a baseline feel to adjust from when you later use live weather and/or external loads.
- Make sure you lineup on runway rolling straight before locking your tailwheel by pulling back on the stick (or however you setup your ground handling tailwheel lock)
- Re verify youāve set the appropriate trims to compensate for torque effect and P-factor (left yaw tendency).
- Ensure you have the lastest version - which is much more forgiving on the takeoff roll torque effect and P-Factor (contributing to left wing stall on overly aggressive liftoff).
- At about 100+ mph, Smoothly AND Gently use stick movements to make the transition to flight - Donāt yank on the stick like itās Ace Combat, fly the addon like itās a historical treasure you donāt want to lose.
NOTE: Iām not a real pilot. However, the above suggestions help me with this addon.
P.S. Donāt give up. The Microprose B-17G needs you to make it off the ground
This isnāt a matter of warbirds being a handful. Somethingās wrong.
I think I figured it out. Apparently thereās a cheater autopilot in this thing. The addon seems to load with the autopilot enabled. Before anyone asks, no, itās not in the manual.
As soon as the tail lifts off the ground, the autopilot panics. I noticed this because while the thing was sliding along the ground like a drift car, the ailerons were actuating on their own.
Ctrl+1 is the keyboard binding for Toggle Autopilot Master. Obviously any other binding you have on your hardware works too. When I made sure to toggle AP off before doing anything, it was much easier to control, and was actually able to get in the air.
Edit: Confirmed. Systems.cfg:
[AUTOPILOT]
autopilot_available =1
I set it to 0 and now it feels more like a warbird. Annoying, but manageable. Why in Godās name would AH program this, default it to ON, and have no way to turn it off in the cockpit???
I have also experienced this (when you hot start in the air). It still hot starts on the ground with the AP engaged, but it doesnāt cause the addon to make wild adjustments compared to remembering to deactivate the AP before a hot start takeoff roll (at least for me). It only affects me when I try to trim the elevator after airborne and realize I forgot to disable the AP before rollout.
I agree with the autopilot ābugā, but I just accepted and adjusted for it to use the addon. Aeroplane Heaven is not known for fixing bugs like this - at least not for months or years.. We get what we get, unfortunately.
I need check this too, thx!
Thank you for sharing this fix, worked like a charm and I got a couple of hours of quality flying in with it today.
