New Release: dc-designs-pt17-stearman

Thank you.

The way it all works now, it must be frustrating for devs trying to keep up with it all.
I know it is for me.

Miss that smoke!

Ok. Your Stearman version is encrypted so the mod I was thinking of won’t work for you. :frowning:

I miss it too! I’d have airshow smoke on every single aircraft if I could!

Is it possible to change the “empty_weight_roll_MOI”-value in “flight model.Cfg” for a more accurate roll rate? And would that number be?

I made this change today. Happy with that. So she has her own controller profile now! I must remember to change back from it when I fly another plane and use it when I fly the Stearman again lol

What about the Aerobatic (222km/h) version? I guess that would be more responsive, so leave that “as is”?

@TjejKalas - that’s a good point. Would save flipping over the Controller profile I just made as I’m bound to forget! @DEAN01973 what would be the correct line to edit to have a similar effect? Thanks!

I haven’t flown her in a while and really enjoyed that flight. Such a nice flowing and visceral plane. I guess I love biplanes that are open to the elements.

Are there any other really good similar aircraft available for MSFS? I am looking forward to a Sopwith Camel! I have got the freeware MyKrode DR1 and I like the Staggerwing but I want more like this, with no roof! Any suggestions? (Sorry to derail the thread potentially. PM me if anyone wishes to answer!)

Not a biplane but the Ryan ST might scratch a similar itch.

the Bucker Jungmann from Lionheart Creations would fit the bill - supposed to get an update shortly - or whenever the Marketplace can get their thing together..
It is only available from there and Bill of LHC has stated on another site that he has sent the update to them a few days ago.

and +1 for the Ryan STA

It’s pretty annoying to have to change the profiles of each controller when switching airplane. It would be awesome if each plane could have its own profile where all the controller settings were saved. Then when you choose a plane MSFS automatically loads that profile.

I was just saying the same thing to myself today. I guess we have to put in a feature request.

It’s been requested before and I think Jorg or one of the Asobo devs said they’ll look into it at some point so maybe we’ll get it in 2-3 years. I think some third party addons like Axisandohs will also load up specific profiles for each plane as well but I’m not sure.

There’s the Nieuport 17 by Big Radials that’s pretty good. The Ryan ST-A Special is a really good plane as well as others as mentioned but obviously not a bi-plane. Variants of it were used as military trainers like the Stearman and the ‘Special’ model that A1R studios has developed is aerobatic. It’s also one of the best looking planes for the sim IMO.

Reading posts above, I think many of us here would be happy if DCD could make a Stampe SV4 as well made as the Stearman.
It was light, aerobatic, a whole generation of pilots have been trained with it, and is really fun to fly.
And it would be non-encrypted.

@TjejKalas

I would drop the number by 25% and test it - based on sq ft it should reduce the moment of inertia, but sometimes these things can be counter-intuitive. If lowering it gets the wrong response, you can up it instead.

roll_moment_roll_rate_mach_table also will adapt the roll rate. You would only need to alter the lowest Mach numbers though, of course, for a Stearman, the higher ones would never be encountered

I have a number of custom control profiles for various sim aircraft. It is a bit of a nuisance to have to change them, but it really doesn’t take long and I appreciate having the ability to tune control feel per aircraft. It would be nice if the sim was able to auto-select the correct profile for whatever aircraft you load
maybe eventually. I think I’ve read that FSUIPC does that.

The single best explanation of how it feels to fly a Stearman that I’ve ever heard comes from Bax (he used to write the closing column for Flying magazine and owned a Stearman for years.) He said, “she flies like a grand piano.” This is perfect; it captures both her lumbering ungainliness (a piano really should not fly), and at the same time her grace and smoothness, a feeling of very refined controls.

Yes, Stearmans are aerobatic in the sense that they’re stressed for acro (and are actually very strong), but that doesn’t mean they’re snappy. Think slow, smooth, lumbering, barnstorming types of maneuvers - it’s NOT a Pitts. (Although they do spin/snap pretty enthusiastically.)

The 450hp version could be expected to have top-wing ailerons as well, which improves the roll rate somewhat but still doesn’t make her anywhere near a Pitts. Yes you have more roll authority but you still have all the weight and drag
so roll performance is better but still not “snappy”. Most Stearmans performing in airshows will have the top-wing aileron mod; you can watch videos of a few performances to get an idea.

Axis and Ohs loads control templates automatically based on aircraft/livery. Much easier than switching around profiles for number of engines, curves etc.

I read the Nieuport had an issue that you could not even take off as it was just turning left on the ground after a Sim Update. Was that fixed?

I did grab the Ryan today. Wow yea this thing is very cool. Love the way it jostles around in the wind. After I figured out you need to flick over to main tank after take off - before that, in 3 flights my engine died after 14 mins so hadn’t done a landing (crash landing, yes!!) but now I got that sorted I love it and had some beautiful flights with her today. Now I’ll shut up as I’m de-railing this thread (sorry Dean).

I last flew the N17 about about 2 or 3 weeks ago and managed to take off and land wtihout too much drama. The reserve tank on the Ryan is used for take-offs and landings and only holds a few gallons. I sometimes forget to switch over after taking off myself which adds a bit of excitement to the flight.

Back to the Stearman, I adjusted the roll extremity deadzones as suggested up-thread and I really like how it handles. You lose out on the aerobatics a bit but it’s really nice for some sight seeing or cross country flights.

Well a lot of Stearmans were and are used for Aerobatics, I actually saw a real life aerobatic display by a Stearman and wing walker a few weeks back. I also prefer things to be more realistic but I understand why Dean did things the way he did and it doesn’t bother me too much, plus your tone is pretty bad dude. You can express opinions without throwing insults around.

the Stearman was a military basic trainer - it had to be capable of basic aerobatic flight.
It had to loop, barrel roll, and do basic flight maneuvers to qualify for the trainer contract and fit the bill.
It also had to be durable. The Model 75 was all of that. A basic military trainer and qualifier of cadet pilots.
I agree that DC ‘should’ have 2 flight models to reflect the differences between the stock trainer version with 275hp and only the lower wing ailerons for roll authority - and the cowled 450hp Airshow version - that one would likely be fitted with the upper wing ailerons and connecting rods and would roll about like it does now. It would be nice if the 3D model reflected that aileron mod, but here we are. We can adjust things on our end for the military trainer version to behave a bit more realistically if we want to
until another Stearman update comes along - or some other developer makes an effort to model the single most iconic WWII US biplane in history.

I’m not aiming to be rude, I’m sorry if that’s the case. However, I have to admit that I am pretty upset about the flight model being catered to a casual arcade crowd. I thought us simmers would be prioritized in a flight simulator.
