Thank you for the information.
Every piece of insight regarding the performance of MSFS 2020/2024 and the impact of the driver is valuable to us. I’ve always tested Nvidia driver and Nvidia app without unnecessary extras, such as the overlay, which we can disable during the first launch of Nvidia app - I’ve also always disabled game optimization.
Out of curiosity, I’ll check again to see if they have made any improvements, specifically regarding the CTD during loading MSFS 2020 with DX11. I have some time now, so I’ll reinstall the driver and test it.
EDIT
It seems my post disappeared after yesterday’s forum maintenance, so I’ll have to try to recreate it.
Unfortunately, this means I’ll be spending time rewriting it, as somehow my original post is no longer there.
Just to let you know, the issue with Nvidia app still affecting MSFS 2020 with the latest driver is still ongoing.
So, I uninstalled and reinstalled Nvidia driver - then launched Nvidia app and during the first launch, I disabled Nvidia Overlay and Game Optimization feature.
I mentioned somewhere on the forum that Nvidia doesn’t tell us about all the fixes they introduce - because if they did, we’d probably run out of space on the internet And honestly, all companies do this, including Microsoft.
For example, a new Windows 10 update dated 11.03.2025, KB5053606, was released. In the changelog, under the Highlights section, you’ll find: “This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system”.
under Improvements “This build includes all the improvements from the supported Windows 10, version 21H2 editions. No additional issues are documented for this release”.
Sounds good, right? But what they didn’t mention is that this update also fixes WMR, which was broken by a previous KB update.
So in reality, Microsoft just released a Hotfix that restores WMR functionality. And now what - should we not install it just because it’s a Hotfix? Of course, we have to.
If you think about it, every Windows update is basically a Hotfix, and we install them all the time.
So yeah, Hotfix drivers are just as important as WHQL ones and you’re a great example of that. Props to you for sharing this info! I know of at least two cases on this forum with the exact issue you described.
This driver doesn’t fix the CTD issue I have with MSFS 2020.
MSFS set to DX12.
The option to untick Nvidia App during install was greyed out so I first tried running it with it installed, loaded to around 50% before CTD.
I then uninstalled Nvidia App and restarted PC.
Ran MSFS 2020 and got the same CTD at around 50% loading.
I have tried the last 4 driver releases including this one and they all behave the same with 2020.
Rolled the drivers back to 565.90 and all is well again.
Many other could have a problem, which does not make it generic. Fact is I don’t have it. I can run FS2020 DX11 having the NVIDIA app 11.0.2.341 Game ready driver 572.70 with overlay off without issues or CTD. With overlay on and filters off, then I cannot even load FS2020.
Things are different sometimes.. You seem to have luck starting flights in FS2024 by zooming out, whereas I still need to switch to “low-end” before pressing “start flight”
I tried your method and MSFS still CTD while loading. Same app and driver.
I believe it’s working for you and there could be a setting in the sim other than setting to DX11 causing the issue. I am not going to go down that road because I am happy with DX12 and it would be a lot of work.
Or like you alluded to, it could be specific hardware your method works with.
I have i9-14900KF, 4080 Super and 32gigs ram.
Not to derail the thread. Zooming out works for me but not all the time. If that doesn’t work, I set my TLOD to 10 then usually the flight will start but not always. It’s frustrating for sure.
I don’t know if it was asked in the chat but I didn’t hear any mention of it. However I just tried my most problem airport, KLGA, and it loaded up normally. Have you tried loading anything recently?
This was one thing I never missed when I was on Xbox. Dealing with driver issues. It was just never a factor. Say what you will about Xbox, but for 2020, it rocked.
