Nvidia Image Scaling NIS and VR

Donations could be a good idea to buy you an RTX card and bring DLSS to openXR layers..

That’d actually be a good idea! Isn’t there an crowd-supporting platform for ideas like this? I’d be willing to donate!

Hi Matthieu,
just did two test flights with alpha 4 during night and these two were the most intense and enjoyable flights I had to date with MSFS and NIS

Constant 45+ fps with the CJ4 and 43+ with the FBW A32NX with payware scenery. Settings were OXR 100 / MSFS RS 100, NIS scaling/sharpness 0.8/0.4.

I could not notice any colorbanding or other bugs. It was pure joy and for me this is the most precious tool/plugin of 2021! Man, I love it! Cannot express enough how thankful I am :star_struck: :exploding_head:

Give us the chance to give you something back!

Stephan

To provide some better evidence I finally installed CapFrameX and did some benchmarking. My results from above were mostly confirmed (deviation +/-2 FPS). I’ve also included tests with ALPHA4 of my two favorite settings.

Changing the sharpness does show slight effects. In my opinion, sharpness of .2 gives the best clarity (not over-sharp) and at the same time the best performance (better than .0 and .6).

As I fly with FPS capped to 30 (mainly intended to give the GPU some room to breathe), it is very interesting, that the 1% percentile and even the 0.2 percentile moves up above 25 FPS when FPS are capped through NVIDIA Control Panel. This provides an absolute stutter-free experience.

The results also show, that ALPHA4 indeed brings a slight performance increase alongside with the much appreciated color fixes.

I love your work, Matthieu! Chapeau!

I have the same question. What is the proper way to update to Alpha 4, uninstalling Alpha 3 and then installing Alpha 4 or just replacing the files in the folder?

I’m just guessing here but I would suggest to uninstall Alpha 3 and then install Alpha 4 to make sure everything is set up correctly.

Takes literally 30 seconds more than just copying

You can just replace the files and no need to rerun the install.

Hahaha donate a GPU to an engineer in need  :joy:

Thanks a lot for the hard work, a hudge contribution for the benefit of our community!
And I believe that it’s just the beginning of an extended set of new functionalities

This option will likely bring another 2-3 FPS, which can be a big deal for Motion Reprojection. I know it works well with Elite Dangerous.

What do you mean a video? Like a tutorial to set it up? Or something that does A/B comparison?

I’ll be 100% frank, I likeky don’t have time for any of that (I’m not even sure how someone could capture the scaled output for comparison), but I certainly encourage anybody on this forum to do so! I would probably say better for anyone to wait for the Beta to do that.

Don’t waste your time on the video, we need you coding  When the installer will be there, the video would be moot anyway.

I agree, let the engineer do the engineer stuff, and your time will be more valuable improving this and the Leap motion for hand tracking, for example, which btw you are doing an amazing job, and let the content creators do their job, which I’m pretty sure, there are a few following this thread and they can put out tutorials on this or like me other users walked me thru the process.

That’s my intent. My message was a way to say - anybody feel free to make videos etc if you’d like - just make sure to mentions this is pre-release software and quality may vary and change in the future!

Night colors are fine now, fabulous!

Your icon is correct, you are a real wizard! I will try it soon…Thanks a lot!! :grinning: :+1: :sunglasses:

Lol, I think I picked the default thing that came at account creation

Thanks again for the discussion yesterday, it really helped getting me to think about the issue (and you are now listed in the Special thanks section )

Does the NIS algorithm run on the CPU or GPU? Do you have to enable it in NVidia control panel?

GPU, and any vendor (not just NVIDIA). So no, for this OpenXR layer to work, you don’t need to touch the control panel. I would even recommend to disable it in the control panel, because you don’t want to spend extra GPU on doing NIS for the “desktop” stereo view.

I also realize this might be an important tip for others - do not enable NIS in the driver, you will be spending GPU cycles on the “deskop” stereo view. These are cycles you want to give to the game instead!!

You mean deactivate it in Nvidea Control Panel or Nvidea Experience?
