Off-screen pre cache not working? SU4 & SU3

There is an issue where every time I change cameras (cockpit → external or external → showcase, etc.), the scenery & textures reload as if the area wasn’t preloaded. This leads to stutters and asset pop-ins, even though my Off Screen Terrain Pre-Cache setting is already set to Ultra.

This seems similar to the bug we have in SU3, where pre-cache wasn’t working properly. It looks like the sim is unloading nearby scenery whenever the camera changes instead of keeping it in memory.

Could be the reason of sudden FPS drops.

Since FS2020 WU6, setting off-screen caching to Ultra would make the camera wait until all the scenery is properly loaded before switching, which is what sometimes caused a delay at higher Terrain LOD settings. This behaviour seems to have been disabled, perhaps intentionally.

The off-screen cache is still working as intended, else the scenery wouldn’t load nearly instantly. This is a camera bug.

I am facing the same issue with Off Screen Terrain Pre-Cache every thing on ultra

Please mention which version of SU4 you are testing

1.6.5.0 & 1.6.7.0

1.6.7.0

Edit: The overall perfomance and the night lighting is now great. But still fps drops when changing cams. TLOD reloading when changing cams.

Have you figured out how to remedy this issue? I’m still having it on the latest SU4 beta (.13)

Still an issue on the latest beta build - and costing quite much performance. Really annoying, especially in photogrammatry areas, that it has to reload everytime after looking in another direction - even on ultra.

I guess, this also get’s me quite heavy stutters on landings lately.

I hope the devs will fix this before SU4 release

I would be dissapointed if they dont…

Same im waiting for this and sudden fps drop fix.

One of the early on SU4 beta updates had completely fixed the issue for me. everything loaded instantly with near 0 mainthread/renderthread spike. It was as perfect as could be.

If the fix for this involves using more vram, perhaps they could just adjust the ultra setting and make a clear release note of the fix and it’s impact on vram when using ultra. I currently see very little difference in vram use or caching performance between high and ultra with .29 update.

People forget that the first SU4 Versions had serious WASM bugs and crucial functionality was not available. It is no surprise that performance was better, and also it was clear, that performance will decrease if the bugs get fixed (if you don’t believe me, search my posts in the feedback threads of the versions, where I expected exactly that). From 1.6.11.0, when all bugs were fixed, performance has not changed anymore.

@Frank240374 So the WASM bug fixed the off-screen precache issue. And the WASM fix bugged the Off-screen caching issue.
(From 1.6.11.0, when all bugs were fixed, performance has not changed anymore.) My experience is performance has increased quite a bit since 1.6.11.

I do not subscribe to the opinion (and also it was clear, that performance will decrease if the bugs get fixed)

From my point of view, there is no offscreen pre-cache issue. Yes, the behavior is different compared to SU3, but VRAM usage has improved significantly. All users benefit, but only a few experience stuttering. The problems with filled VRAM have been worse, so it is a feature, not a bug.

The WASM bugs improved performance in general, so things like the different behavior of the pre-caching may not have become visible before the bugs were fixed.

@Frank240374 I believe there is a offscreen precache issue, I agree the vram issue has improved significantly (in my view) thus the purpose of my second post, perhaps to use some of that vram treasure to improve the offscreen caching in the ultra setting. Off course, I do not know that vram use in off screen caching would help. Just an idea to throw out. I also believe the issue affects more than a few users. Just my opinion on that belief.

As another datapoint, I’ve not experienced this issue at all on my previous Intel Arc 770 nor my new AMD RX 9070 XT (both paired with an i7-12700K & 32 GB DDR5 RAM) and irrespective of the aircraft - airliner, helicopter or GA chosen for the flight.
