FLIGHT DETAILS

This weekend is the Super Bowl, the largest sporting event in the United States! Every year, aerial footage of the game and stadium is provided by airship, so we felt it fitting to fly to New Orleans, host city of Super Bowl LIX, in the Skyship 600! This will be the first time Community Fly-In Friday has used a lighter-than-air aircraft!

Additionally, February is Black History Month. As an alternative flight plan to any fly-in participants who would prefer to fly a traditional aircraft instead of a blimp, we are also offering a second route option. This flight starts at Moton Field Municipal Airport (06A), home of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.

For those who may be unfamiliar with their story, the Tuskegee Airmen were African American aviators who bravely flew combat missions to help liberate Europe from Nazi Germany during World War II while simultaneously facing racial discrimination themselves in the United States. The National Park Service describes their story thusly:

The name Tuskegee Airmen has become synonymous with Victory. Victory in war abroad. Victory against racism in America. They fought two wars and came off victorious in both. The Tuskegee Airmen challenged America’s claim, that “All men are created equal,” while she openly practiced gross racial prejudice. She treated her own sons as enemies, and enemies as sons.

We on the Microsoft Flight Simulator team are incredibly proud to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and their fight against both fascism abroad and racism at home with this week’s Community Fly-In!

For both flight plans, the full stop landing will be at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (KMSY), named in honor of a legendary icon of African American culture, jazz musician and New Orleans native Louis Armstrong!

Option 1: Blimps

Option 2: Tuskegee Airmen Flight

MSFS (2020) Pilots on PC can download the .pln file here:
2025-02-07 New Orleans (Blimps).PLN (882 Bytes)

2025-02-07 New Orleans (Tuskegee).PLN (2.2 KB)

**MSFS 2024 Pilots on both PC and Xbox can import the flight plan from the new Flight Planner tool here:

You can find instructions on how to load a flight plan from the Flight Planner website to your in-sim EFB on your PC or Xbox console on our forums here.

We will be starting at KASD (blimps) or 06A (Tuskegee Airmen). Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: for the blimp flight, we recommend the Airship Industries Skyship 600. For the Tuskegee Airmen flight, we recommend either the T-6 Texan or P-51 Mustang (especially the “Bunny” livery which is painted with the signature red tail livery of the Tuskegee Airmen). Alternatively, you can choose any other aircraft with a cruising speed of ~150 knots.

No stream today?

EDIT: Ah ok, I was too early…

It reminded me of a school of fish.

Blimps, Blimps everywhere!

A hilarious fly-in today. I did manage to fly under the bridges but unfortunately I was focused on flying instead of taking pics for proof. I will say a slow controlled descent makes it much easier and as well as staying in first person mode. Cheers!

This was excellent! I missed the glider flight last time, and I love the variety so that made me a bit sad. But the Blimp flight today was top notch fun, thanks for hosting as always and keeping things interesting!

With that said, and since you mentioned that most FS2024 players are using Career mode, can you please make some career missions for the blimp?!?

The lighting/atmosphere and weather were perfect using real time and real world weather. I could not stop taking screenshots.

Hit the invisible wall but at full throttle, eventually made it through. It was like an invisible slow-motion force field moreso than a wall.

Good approach but I pooched the landing and busted my uni-gear.

Could not make it in time, but watched the stream the day later. Looked epic all those blimps

There are no blimps in FS2020, but the Tuskegee flight route was also nice. Furthermore, thanks Seedy for playing the guitar for us, it was nice of you to share your talent with us!
