FLIGHT DETAILS

August 17 is Indonesia Independence Day! :indonesia: To celebrate the national holiday of this Southeast Asian nation, our Community Fly-In Friday event this week will be a flight across the island of Java from Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta to the popular tourist destination of Bali.

For the best experience, we recommend downloading the free World Update XIII: Oceania from the Marketplace.

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file below:
2023-08-18 Indonesia.PLN (5.2 KB)

We will be starting at WIII. Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

ANNIVERSARY PRIZE GIVEAWAY

This week is also the three-year anniversary of the PC release of Microsoft Flight Simulator on August 18, 2020! In recognition of this date, we will be conducting multiple prize giveaways throughout Friday’s livestream! Viewers can enter a random draw from Twitch chat to win one of these prizes:

AIRCRAFT

Recommended aircraft: we will be flying approximately 600nm across the entire island of Java, so a faster plane will be needed. We recommend the TBM 930, L-39 Albatross, or any other plane of your choice that can maintain a cruise of over appoximately 300-320 knots.

MULTIPLAYER SETTINGS

Please adhere to the following settings so you can see everyone / be seen by everyone.

Variable Setting
Server SE Asia
Multiplayer All Players
Live traffic As preferred
Weather Few Clouds
Time of Day Daytime

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

COMMUNICATION

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

LET’S FLY

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

You know, with this Friday being MSFS’s 3rd anniversary, surprised that the fly-in doesn’t relate to that!

Anyways, as always, excited to attend

EDIT-See the prize giveaway that has been added due to it :eyes: exciting!

Looks like this is another flight for the fabulously famous Spitfire!!!

The launch back in 2020 also (obviously) coincide with Indonesian independence day, at least in our time zone.

LOL i literally bought that throttle quadrant three days ago. If i win, i’'ll give the throttle away to someone else in the giveaway :stuck_out_tongue:

The overall landscape of Indonesia (especially Java island) is mainly ricefield and villages full of houses with reddish brown clay roofing. It is distinct, from let’s say other Asian countries with ricefields like Japan, China, The Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam, especially those red clay roofs.

This scenery is never captured in virtual rendition. And I think MSFS’ Bing database did a pretty perfect job representing the actual landscape.

I feel like actually flying over that familiar Indonesian landscape! Below is some villages in Banten province Northwest of WIII (Soekarno-Hatta Intl Airport).

Oddly enough I did almost exactly this flight about a week ago off my own back.

It’s got some great scenery on the way.

Community Fly-In Friday: Indonesia - YouTube

Given the reason for the event it would be have been nicer to have been able to bring a wider choice of aircraft, struggling to find a suitable one in my hanger. Not the best choice of event in IMHO for a fast trip.

Zero’s (JustFlight or livery available on flightsim.to for Texan) would have been used during the original conflict from the research I’ve done as they were left behind on the islands following the Japanese surrender on VJ Day.

Texans and P-51’s left by the Dutch were also used by the Indonesian Air Force, the Reno pack just doesn’t get enough love these days.

Just my two cents if this could be considered when setting up future events. Can’t believe I’m alone when wanting to choice an appropriate aircraft to match with the historical event.

They recommend the TBM930 which is a default aircraft , therefore everyone has it available in their hangar

You can pick any aircraft you want! As seedy says it’s an open event, and fly whatever you want. The aircraft in the original post are just recommended

Like every week I fly in the Witch, @HeXtHeLeGeNd318 flies the dark star, and many people hop in their 747!or AN225.

Agreed both but we had a fast event back in July for the remembering of the first jet engine. That was a very memorable event and aircraft choice and recommended cruise speeds was appropriate.

A fast flight over Indonesia in celebration of their Independence, just seems inappropriate.

Players are free as you say to choose what they like but a bit more thought on the part of the community team would make these events just a little more unique.

it just seems an excuse for them to show off as much of the scenery as possible rather than relationship with the date the event is on.

I really enjoy to fly the events that have some historical significance, they always given a few bits of info in chat that we may not have known.

Stock planes like the PC6 porter and maybe even the beaver/caravan are completely written out of this event even though they are actively used in this area of the world. Guess I just think about these things too much

Al this is the reason I skipped the Africa flight last week, it didn’t mean anything to me and even than one had a cruise speed of 120 Knots, ruling out some of the more appropriate planes if you hope to keep up, it is a group flight after all. Ironically the team suggested the beaver for that flight even though the cruise speed is only 109 Knots.

No one is forcing you to take part.
i pick and chose which ones i take part in

Well if you read my response, you’d see I do to…no participation in Africa last week.

The event itself sounds great, the rational for the fast flight is not.

Feel free to skip the comments, I’m posting as constructive criticism for the community managers only.

Thank you for the feedback @GrungeSlayer! We realize different weeks/flightplans/aircraft cater to different people, and try to keep a wide variety throughout the months. We will keep this in mind!

Keep in mind by recommending default aircraft that everyone has, it means no-one has to spend additional money on a specific aircraft to join the fly in so it caters for everyone.

And The PC-6 Turbo Porter, Caravan and Beaver are not default aircraft? Note I only have standard edition as well.

Setting the speed to 300 Knots very much limits peoples choice? The L-39 isn’t a default aircraft as it requires something from the Reno pack so your argument is moot.

Just to bring the point home, looking at my hanger (possibly missing a few unwanted defaults), Sonicviz AMP very useful when doing this sort of research:

All we got to choose is the TBM 930 or airliners if we stick to default aircraft. The CJ4 seems a bit bugged for me as it overspeeds at 250 Knots so not suitable either.

EDIT: Someone did just clarify regarding TAS vs IAS which explained the overspeed, always good to learn something new.

If players want to join any flight in any aircraft, fine but lets not relate this any historic event…just call it another weekly fly-in. Could always have been mentioned as the Coffee fly-in, who doesn’t like a good cup of Java.

For me, I prefer to pick the appropriate aircraft for the event (L-39 etc are not appropriate IMHO other then being fast enough) otherwise it just doesn’t mean anything.

Anyways the community managers have responded which is all I was looking for. I won’t comment further.

I thought the event was linked to a location, and date, not a particular plane. If it were me I would have probably picked some good spots to do some bush flying, landing at tiny jungle strips, that kind of thing.

Just had a quick look on Flightaware, and all I see are wide body jets, so I guess that they are
region appropriate after all.

In your original post you mentioned the zero , t6 and p51 , neither of which are default aircraft.
