This week, we’re taking a pause from the Community Fly-In Friday World Tour to re-create an important milestone from aviation history, the first air mail flights in the United States! :us: :small_airplane: :email:

On May 15, 1918, two groups of aviators carrying scheduled mail for the first time in the USA departed in Curtiss JN-4 Jenny aircraft from Long Island, New York and Washington, DC. They both made a stop at the mid-way point in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before continuing on the rest of the way.

In commemoration of this event, we will re-fly both routes! You can choose your preferred departure, either New York or Washington. We are recommending that players enrolled in the option SU_15 beta choose the Washington (KDCA) departure and players on the regular release build choose the New York (KFRG) departure, but this is not a strict requirement.

Both groups should arrive in Philadelphia at approximately the same time.

Pilots on PC can download the .pln file here:
2024-05-17 US Air Mail Historic Re-enactment New York to Philadelphia.PLN (2.1 KB)

2024-05-17 US Air Mail Historic Re-enactment Washington to Philadelphia.PLN (2.7 KB)

We will be starting at KFRG or KDCA. Please load your aircraft 10 minutes prior to take off and taxi over to the runway in preparation for departure.

Recommended aircraft: Curtiss JN-4 Jenny or any aircraft of your choice which can maintain a cruise speed of approximately 60 knots.

Please adhere to the following settings so you can see everyone / be seen by everyone.

Variable Setting
Server SE Asia
Multiplayer All Players
Live traffic As preferred
Weather Few Clouds
Time of Day Daytime

It is advised in this flight to turn off both aircraft collisions and terrain collisions. If you do crash, you can use “slew” mode to join the pack. If the pack will be too scattered before the first stop, we will use slew on a defined point to regroup.

To communicate with others, a voice channel on the "Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Discord” at https://discord.gg/msfs will be available to join.

This is meant to be a fun and informal flight. Everybody is welcome, no matter the amount of experience.

Decided to do both flights

Flight 1 - Youtube:

Flight 1 - Twitch

I was a little distracted at the start of the flight, which explains my lack of take off, of course my landing got a little crazy too when I had the plane flip on me a few times…

Flight 2 - Twitch

Yay, finally a very slow flight…thanks community team. I get a chance to take the Tiger Moth out on a group flight.

A challenging but fun community flight with the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny!

This week’s flight was definitely a change of pace. The Jenny gained altitude slowly but if I didn’t pay attention for a few moments (tried to read something in the Twitch chat for example) I accidentally started to descend. But I liked the Jenny, probably will fly it again on some shorter routes.

And here’s a picture flying under the Brooklyn bridge. Because I am, too, not a coward.
