Option to disable bloom and lens flare. Don’t know why but there is no option?
edit: pls msfs let us know what the plan is now? It felt off the short wishlist. So what now??

I can bear lens flare on an external camera, but I cannot when the ‘camera’ is meant to represent my eyes in the virtual world…
Lens flare should not be included on the internal cockpit camera, regardless of any options being added to turn it off. (I suppose that’s technically a different wishlist request, but there are so many more important topics to get to first.)
I agree, voted.
I actually like the lens flare, but I experienced this bloom for my first time today, and holy baby jebus I was not prepared - even after reading the other topics about it.
How this passed quality, and alpha without being fixed is beyond me. But hey, then again the B738M doesnt even have working external lights.
And heat blur (like from the engines). In 2020 you could edit the effect files, it was tedious, but it could be done. In 2024 you can’t, the files are coming from cloud, are encrypted, and the game replaces them whenever it feels like it. Global switch would be better anyway.
We had that option in 2020 and now I have to deal with that annoying thing because the option to disable it was removed from the graphics menu.
Is this even normal or also experienced by others? It’s from 737 MAX using TAA.
Unless there’s a way to disable all this excessive bloom at night, I’m not touching this thing.
update: ah, found it. All displays were at 50% brightness by default which looks horrendous at night. Once I decreased that to around 15% it looks much better.
But this only fixes glass cockpits. All the other lights (e.g. annunciators) are still emitting bloominess.
But such bloomness wasn’t an issue in MSFS2020 even at 100% brightness.
Agreed. Some aircraft are worse than others, esp the PC-24…
They have to provide way more fine control options in the graphics / settings. FS, more than any other game relies on users being able to tune the visuals for their own visuals / perf balance, and they’ve hidden way too many options that are important in the settings.
( while ironically providing too many options in the control mapping, it takes days to find all the mappings interfering with your flight controls )
Voted!
I’m perfectly fine with certain levels of bloom if done right. But lens flare needs to go in first-person view! When I fly a real aircraft I don’t have that in my eyes, so… Please Asobo, give use the option back to turn lens flare off!
I am highly disappointed and disheartened by the excessive amount of bloom in the cockpit lighting. As a former commercial pilot, this is greatly exaggerated and a real immersion killer. It looks like a poorly implemented game rather than the sophisticated renders the sim is no doubt capable of rendering.
The bloom really is excessive. It looks foggy, even. Completely ruins the night flying experience, I can’t get pure blacks!
I have the same problem but also during the day. It makes everything look like its behind fog, instruments are not clear, blacks are grey and really don’t look good. (I checked my FS2020 and it does not have the problem). Need to bring back the bloom / contrast control. Any other ideas on how to fix this?
You can get lens flare on windscreens
I would say you can get bloom-style effects with refracted light through a windscreen. Here’s a random image that came up in a search for a dirty windscreen in a car:
But we currently see lens flare that is more unique to camera lenses and more like the below image (but less strong in the sim). The spots appear in other parts of the cockpit, on the opposite side of your screen to the light source. If the light is in the top-left, the effects pass through the centre of your display to the opposite corner. Those aren’t realistic unless we’re looking through a camera lens, as far as I know, so shouldn’t be in the first-person cockpit view:
yeah, agreed
This is one thing I have noticed on screenshots from FS2024. It constantly looks very low contrast during the day. I appreciate that atmospheric haze plays a part but when you are close up to an aircraft and the darkest black parts are still mid grey, that doesn’t look right.
Yes. looks all washed out
Yes i want back to msfs 2020 and colors are so more sharp and vibrant. Hope disabling bloom will fix this. Its really washed out in 2024
The interesting thing is that the trailers don’t show this washed out look. They look much more contrasty and colourful.
I don’t really dislike the bloom, feels not that far off from what I see at night myself and gives you a need to change the brightness of displays and indicators just like in real life. But I don’t like the lens flare as it’s not something the human eye sees.
What about bringing back the 2 settings like this:
Bloom:
Lens-flare:
