P-51 for MSFS?

I’ve been wanting to get a P-51 for MSFS. Some of the discussions I’ve found say the Asobo P-51s are better than AH’s.

However, I have hard rule of a 4.5 rating for the Marketplace airplanes. And, well, they range from 2.2 to 3.6.

Let integrity be your guide.

It depends on your priorities. If you want the look of a restored warbird, I would go for the Reno Pack, and you get the T-6 as well. There are some dazzling repaints of restored warbirds on fs.to. On the other hand if you want a war weary Mustang, and don’t mind the price, go AH.

Search in this formum on “P51” and you’ll see threads about the Asobo Reno P51’s not flyable. I have them myself and for some time now when you throttle up, the engine cuts off. It has been reported, but nothing has been done to solve this issue. In the end, I did put all the Asobo P51 in the hangar. I fly now with the AH P51.

P51 is free on DCS

I would love a good P51D. I have an Asobo one and it’s pretty average. Sounds are uninspiring and it doesn’t handle how you might expect. Though I can get it in the air, and the engines don’t seem to cut out if you don’t overheat them - however I can’t say for sure it’s not bugged because I pretty much never fly it.

The AH one uses Asobo sounds and lots of people seem to have issues with take off & landing. It doesn’t seem that great but has a premium price tag.

Problem is I was spoiled by the P51D from A2A in FSX. That thing was incredible

Personally, I down-rated my Asobo P-51 to 1 star when the Reno collection was broken by the MSFS update SEVERAL months ago (see post above by Dutch1957). I only gave 1 star, because 0 stars is not an option. Rumor has it that the next MSFS update will finally fix the issue.

I was very happy with Man O’ War before the break, with 4 stars (because of some slight instrument inaccuracies that I pointed out elsewhere). I will up-rate, if the fix works.

Hello @Dutch1957,

This issue is resolved in the upcoming SU_15. Please see the release notes from one of the beta builds.

  • Fixed an issue that caused some P-51s to lose power on full throttle.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Ah, so that bug might be why the ratings are knocked so low. I’m already on SU15.

Are ya now?

Maybe you have the SU15 beta, and reports from beta users are that it appears fixed. I’m not a beta user, so I am still waiting to confirm myself.

The beta is great so far. Only issue I’m having is G1000 screens can go dark in some situations. But that is a known issue that should be fixed before release.

Only a couple of them I think? I was flying one recently - tho I can’t recall which one exactly. Besides, they should be fixed when SU15 drops.

How does it compare to the Spitfire? Not the airplane, but the quality of the model?

The FI Spitfire? Neither the AH nor Asobo P-51 compare well to the FI Spitfire, unless you’re only considering the 3D models. The AH P-51 is very good visually, and the Asobo isn’t bad either.

In terms of flight models, both are pretty terrible in comparison to the FI Spitfire. Sound is fine on the Asobo P-51, but absolute trash on the AH P-51.

I use the AH P-51 with the alternate flight model mod on flightsim.to and a custom sound pack, and I’m pleased with it. If you’re on PC, you could get it and mod it, but the question is - why pay so much just to mod so much of the addon to make it adequate? I impulsed bought it when it came out and modded it later, but I don’t know if I would do it again had I known.

I found out it’s supposed to be fixed in the upcoming release… Fingers crossed

I almost mod by default, lol. Most content on fs.to is usually top quality.

I always go there to get the fixes and tweaks. I feel sorry for the xbox users. :frowning:

Sound should be one of the top priorities for a P-51. IRL, those things are the most beautiful sounding machine made by mankind.

Yeah, there aren’t a whole lot of good options regarding sound if you get the AH one. You can link to the Asobo P-51 sounds (but then you’d need the Asobo P-51), or use a legacy FSX sound pack. With each approach there are drawbacks. I use a mixture of a legacy sound pack for the engine and the AH .pck sound file with the engine part turned off (because they are terrible). It’s pretty good, but the only drawback is the engine sound doesn’t change when the canopy is open vs. closed.

I’m actually looking at Buttkickers now.

The Cessna 172 Soundpack is one of the best Marketplace purchases I’ve made. I wish there were more of those available. It sounds way more real and alive then most other aircraft in the sim.

I went with the Asobo P-51’s. They were fine for touring - decent handling and good sounds. Until they were broken for the past few months. But it looks like the next Sim Update should finally fix that.

The AH one has the better 3D model with working canopy, removable engine cowling/ammo box doors, and drop tanks. It is generally agreed that the AH sound is much worse and the flight model is meh.

If you’re on PC and not on a budget, I recommend getting both - use the AH plane with the sounds from Asobo, and improvement mods from flightsim_2. If you’re on a budget like me, I’ve found the Asobo one satisfied the itch - at least before it was broken.

In my case it didn’t even occur to me back then that someone would dare to release a fantastic looking P-51 with completely botched sound. It’s such a disconnect between the visuals and the audio that it seemed

Unfortunately the realization hit me on my first flight. I immediately researched a sound replacement and found a good package on Simmarket that worked with JayDee’s mod (thanks for the help back then!). Unfortunately that was another 8 bucks or so on top.

I don’t buy any aircraft anymore, without thoroughly checking it out in videos. I had to extend that practice to the supercheap Local Legends / Famous Flyers as well, because even 10 bucks are too much for some them.
