Same exact thing for me.
A bit off topic, but I remember swimming in a busy lake as a kid - the distant gargling, buzzing sound of boat motors underwater - and that is what the AH P-51 sounded like to me. Pretty bad.

The Asobo P-51 in the base Reno pack is awesome, and it’s fixed in SU15 (beta). AAA sounds and model. With John T’s texture rework (inside and out) it looks phenomenal. Here’s some of the cockpit variations he includes (his shots).
Flightsim.to - Profile of Bomber12th
Thanks! If there is published flightsim.to content for an airport I’m flying to/from or and airplane improvement, I grab it.
I feel bad for xbox users that don’t get access to this content. ![]()
I’m happy to spend way more if the developer effort matches the price. $40-$60 (usd) is stupid cheap for a good content.
I can see your point. I often end up using that justification when purchasing addons, but the buyer’s remorse sets in when, for example, GotFriends releases an absolutely fantastic F4F-4 at $20 with far superior quality in most aspects to the $40 AH P-51. 16 bucks is only a pizza, but it still makes you wonder.
I’m a big fan of the P-51D that came from the Reno DLC, when it’s working correctly at least. I do wish it had some more interaction, like open/close canopy, maybe some ground visuals like chocks and such. I’d like to see every aircraft have extras like that one day.
I flew “Bunny” all the time up until they broke it last summer, sounds like it will finally be fixed soon, although I don’t hold much hope that it will stay fixed, or will come without other bugs. The Reno P-51’s have unfortunately had a few bugs and they all seem to reoccur eventually. It’d probably be better at this point for Microsoft to just have another developer make a P-51D for the base game and include all of the Reno liveries just so we’d have something stable in the sim. I don’t personally have access to the AH Mustang because I’m on Xbox, although I admit the sounds of that one turn me off of it anyway.
P-51A Mrs. Virginia is also really nice, but currently has a prop visual issue that hasn’t been fixed in quite some time and it gets a bit annoying to see. Even still, I’d recommend getting the A as well as the D. Two very different looking Mustangs. I enjoy them both and for $10 a piece it’s one of the few warbirds available that isn’t overpriced.
I got the Reno pack. It seems okay so far, but the Spitfire feels much more “alive”?
It’s kind of hard to say why exactly.
Yeah the Asobo ones are surely simplified. You don’t need lots of right aileron on take-off like you do in the real thing (at least from the POV take offs I’ve seen).
Spitfires fly very differently than Mustangs and are way more fun in my opinion. I think it’s mostly due to the laminar flow wing design and extra weight of the Mustang which means they need more speed and are way less responsive at slower speeds.
I kind of figured that out. I had slowed down for a maneuver and she was not very responsive.
Part of the fun of simming is learning the airplane.
I once bought a ride on a P-51 - Gunfighter II. It cost me $1,500.
But one of the main things I took away from it was the feeling of flight compared to a small plane like a Cessna 172.
It felt like I was on an airliner, where the feeling of the wings on the air was super sharp and solid. Not like a 172 where it feels like you’re leisurely floating around the whole time.
One other thing I noticed that flight sims have never captured, is the preflight run up. When running the engine up the whole plane aggressively bounces up and down from the prop wash over the wings. Definitely makes you feel like you’re strapped on a wild horse. ![]()
Good price, that last time I saw one advertised it was $2K.
I’ve been wanting to take a ride on a B-17. There are so few of them around now.
Not true… my P51 Man of War veers to the left suddenly on take off and the engine cuts out.
You are running the SU15 beta and the problem remains?
They have always done this, this is just the nature of a powerful tail wheel aircraft. To avoid this left veering, make sure your flight controls are held full-back to put weight on that tail wheel. Then throttle up very slowly to get going, slamming the throttle forward will not work, you will spin left. Maintaining right rudder down the runway to keep her straight.
As Seedy mentioned the engine cut out has been fixed in the SU15 beta if you join that. They will throttle up no problem. However I’m not sure if they have fixed the fuel tank issues they also had before the throttle up bug appeared…
Very tough in a simulator as we don’t have the seat of the pants feedback feel.
I haven’t installed a Beta. I’m just accepting the standard updates. I see that if they’ve fixed the throttle issue in SU15 and it’s in Beta and isn’t just naturally updated, then I don’t have that fix. Thanks for the information. I’ll wait. It’s not a high priority.
