P51 bad flight modeling

First, thank you for your posts. I appreciate your willingness to help!

Asobo designed this plane to takeoff with flaps. I say this because if you spawn on the runway flaps are at flaps 2. If you start cold and run the checklist they provide in game, their checklists say to set flaps to 20 degrees. That leads me to believe they designed the flight model for the aircraft to takeoff with flaps. I no longer use any flaps on takeoff.

With my test of extending and retracting flaps, I was doing this in straight and level flight. I’ve flown real aircraft, never warbirds though, and was surprised how the initial reaction from the aircraft was opposite of what I have experienced in real life and in simulated aircraft as well. But now I know the P51 doesn’t settle(retracting) or ballon(extending). I appreciate the info!

I hope you have this aircraft and can feel for yourself if they got it right.

Though at this time if they got it right, I believe it’s by accident as they clearly intended the aircraft to takeoff with flaps and I can takeoff with full power with no issues at all. Which if the modeling was correct there would be no way to takeoff with full power.

Don’t assume that Asobo intended anything by the flap settings for any of the aircraft. I always search for the real POH for any aircraft I fly, obviously in real life, but also the sim (not that I’ve piloted anything faster than an Arrow in real life). The only time flaps are called for in a P-51 on takeoff is for, as for any aircraft, short field takeoffs.

Here’s an excellent resource for military aircraft POH’s

Just search for “Mustang” in the blog search field and you’ll come up with a list of POH’s, Training Manuals, and Maintenance manuals for the P-51.

and another for WWII aircraft manuals in general

Correct. A lot of them are wrong. EG - Bonanza and Baron. I think there’s a file that’s editable to change default configuration, but I don’t care to bother with that especially since I like to start cold and dark.

Even then, some planes have brakes on and others are brakes off cold and dark in the sim. Go figure…

Thanks for the link!

Asobo should try to get the checklist accurate, especially for pay aircraft. But now I know.
