PC review: Impulse Simulations Bankstown YSBK (MSFS)

Test machine specs: MSI X670E, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX, 48gb RAM

MSFS add-ons: FSLTL, GSX Pro, REX AccuSeason (which may misrepresent some colours in certain light conditions)

Since this airport is currently on sale at an insane discount (80%) at Impulse’s own website, I thought I’d make a review. I’ve not included any images as for five Aussie dollars (£2.50), it’s a no brainer.

DETAIL

I had looked at this GA/freight airfield a number of times but never managed to convince myself I needed it — it looked old in promo images and the in-sim marketplace reviews have never been particularly encouraging — but when it popped up at only £2.50, I really didn’t care if it turned out to be fit only for the bin…

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised on my first flight into YSBK. First off, for fans of interior modelling, you won’t find any here. But what you will find is a large, nicely detailed GA airport with a good amount of peripheral detail. Building texturing is pretty high-res for a scenery of this vintage, and while some are perhaps a little sterile-looking, others feature a realistic degree of weathering. Ground textures are nice but, not unexpectedly, nothing to write home about by 2025’s standards.

What really stands out to me is the quality of the surrounding detail — fast food restaurants (McDonald’s, Hungry Jacks and KFC), a BP fuel station, an Aldi supermarket, a Bunnings DIY store (complete with fast food stand), a modelled golf course, plus lots of custom roads with signage/street lighting.

The only issue is that there are no available stands for a BAe 146, despite the fact that they do (or certainly did) fly in here regularly. In fact, there’s a static TNT example, which serves as clarification.

PERFORMANCE

FSLTL does add a limited amount of traffic here (depending of course on your FSLTL settings) but it’s not going to trouble even a fairly low-end system. Performance is, therefore, excellent.

VERDICT

I’ve never been disappointed with an Impulse scenery but I was surprised just how good this airfield is. It’s easily worth its full asking price but for $4.99 (AUD), it’s not even worth contemplating for just a split second. The detail is surprisingly good for an older scenery, across the airfield and beyond. It’s just a shame Asobo’s photogrammetry and Orbx’s Sydney pack don’t cover this far out into the suburbs.

I totally agree with your review. Admittedly I paid full price when it first came out. I spent fifteen years working just around the corner from the real YSBK and often would go and eat my lunch watching the GA aircraft. The Impulse offering is competent and a convincing portrayal of the real airport, or a least the real airport as it was. Like other GA airports around Australia, YSBK is gradually being nibbled away by non-aviation commercial interests who see the potential for developing all that flat open land!

Thank you for the review. I’m a big fan of Impulse Simulations, I own all their australian international airports. YSBK is just too small for me but looking forward to their Perth.
