Hi group, I’ve been struggling with this for quite a while now. Where I get a big FPS dip and stutter, which occurs approx. every 5 min or so. The FPS drop will last 3 or 4 seconds, and then I’m back to flying butter smooth.
I fly only VR, and using a G2, 3090FE, 64GB RAM. MSFS2020 is on a dedicated NVME drive. (Using Win 10 as well, along with nVidia driver 522.25)
I’ve tried flying with AVG disabled, with rolling cache on and off, plus even using manual cache. But still, I get the stutter/FPS drop around every 5 minutes. I’m not running anything in the background. So it just seems strange to get this.
I do use OpenXR, with MR enabled. getting a steady 30fps until I get hit with this issue.
I see ton’s of threads out there regarding micro stutters and such, this is not my issue. I’m flying butter smooth, just fine. It’s the periodic, every 5 min or so that I get his with a 3 - 4 second FPS drop, then I’m back to butter smooth…
edit - also, I have 50mbps download speed…
any suggestions?
TIA,
-Jav
edit - not sure why it’s wanting me to put a tag for “ms-store, or xcloud…” my issue is with my PC
So the CPU is a bit on the lower end when it comes to single core performance (as I’m on a 9900k I know the struggle on MSFS)
Here is a list of possible things to optimize for MSFS to perform more fluid, I’d suggest to try the Nvidia control panel changes first as you can easily revert them
Have the very same issue, with DX11 and DX12. My stutters are shorters, usually 1-2 seconds, but they’re there. I immediately recover the normal FPS I’m having. Happens in particularly in very busy airports.
R7 3700X, 32GB RAM, 2060 12GB, MSFS installed on its own SATA. Running on a 1920x1080 monitor supersampling at 140, TLOD and Objects at 200, almost everything at ultra, capped at 30fps (that’s enough for me).
Can’t find the culprit yet. Had the issue almost gone with 522.25 driver using DX12 (crashes, sim completely frozen on DX11 and only possible to quit via task manager), upgraded to studio driver 522.30, and now I have better FPS but the stutter again.
If I get what it is, or a config that deals with it, I’ll share of course. I’m currently trying to deal with that.
Implemented most all of the steps in the link noted above, but still experiencing the “every 5 min or so” lag/FPS drop. I do my utmost to keep my VR rig clean and tidy of unnecessary running processes. I’ll continue my hunt, and post any additional findings. thanks to all for the continued input/suggestions.
This issue is almost always quelled by going into Developer Mode at a big airport in a photogrammetry city in a complex plane like the Fenix or any airliner you have, and reducing your Terrain Level of Detail until you get a smooth 30 FPS.
TLOD hits the CPU harder than the GPU and you get stutters when the CPU tries to catch up. You just get lower FPS when the GPU struggles, but time stops in sim when the CPU is the bottleneck.
still chasing this demon. Not a deal breaker, but still, every 5 min or so I get 1 or 2 second stutter/hiccup. Doesn’t matter where I’m flying. In the bush, over the clear ocean, or a city.
I’ve tried both DX11 and DX12, it still exists. Though when I enabled the MSI on my 4090, this did help with my performance a bit. (Hags on and off, no diff either)
Regardless, I’m still flying. Using DX12, TAA, OpenXR stuff, HAGS on, and enabled BAR for MSFS 2020. I’m really happy with my performance, except for this every 5 min or so thingy. Only with MSFS, never DCS or IL-2…
I have exactly the same issue except it happens every 8-12 minutes consistently. The screen freezes for half a second, then unfreezes for half a second then freezes for another half second then everything goes back to normal. I’ve just a total reinstall of MSFS but no change; I’ve used DX11 and DX12. I use an Aero with a Ryzen 9 7950X, RTX 4090, 64Gb DDR5. I’ve watched task manager when this freeze happens and GPU usage is around 18% and GPU around 20% so it’s not a hardware issue. There are no background services of any note when this happens and I don’t use the desktop screen slide show. I use Honecomb yoke and throttle quadrant but can’t discount any peripheral causing a problem. I will try limiting FPS in nVidia control panel to see if this is an issue but given the low usage of both CPU and GPU I can’t see that will help so any other suggestions welcome! It’s comforting to know it’s not just me with this issue!
Something that happens every 8-12 minutes that last for about 1.5 seconds is extremely difficult to troubleshoot. There is a possibility that something, either an app or a service, that starts running periodically and finishes quickly. Task Manager isn’t going to be much help here. Start looking at the Windows logs and don’t focus on errors but on something starting and stopping. It could be something network related, registry related, or Windows doing something. The important things are its regular occurrence and duration. I doubt it is MSFS. It may be happening without MSFS running but not have any impact.
Are you talking about the stutter that in periods occours when your in cockpit, tilting the wings, causing the horizon movements (with the ground) to stutter? Nothing else stutters, just that, and if viewed external - theres no problems?
As the OP, a quick update. I could never solve this every 5 min lag/stutter.
A couple months ago, I upgraded my game rig. Built a 13900K, 64GB RAM, 4x NVMe’s, and re-used my RTX4090. Using Win11 Pro, DX12, latest DLSS, OpenXR, and the Reverb G2. I copied over my MSFS 2020 install (following recommended steps). I haven’t experienced this issue at all.
Mind you, I was planning at some point to upgrade my rig for other reasons and not to solve this issue.
