I must disagree. The reason is that I can fly around my home area and see PG fully as good as that shown in the post above, then immediately switch to London – i.e., same server, same time of day, same internet speed (400+MBS in my case), same CPU/GPU – and see that city in its usual deplorable state. And neither a rolling cache nor pausing to let graphics “catch up” improves the situation an iota. The problem is either poor PG data or PG data that’s contained in a format that cannot be processed efficiently by server or PC. That’s 99% of the explanation of bad PG, and the Asobo team has never blamed it on anything else.
Do you have the Orbx London landmarks pack installed?
In the area covered by my pic the only structures that are obviously from Orbx Landmarks are outlined in red below. Everything else, the vast majority of the picture, is stock MSFS PG and looks the same if I disable the Orbx addon. The Orbx addon adds specific buildings largely concentrated along either side of the river Thames further south of this picture.
And your second picture still looks reasonable.
There’s actually a bunch more than you give Orbx credit for. But I’ll let you play spot the difference with my comparison pics for that. ![]()
Your second picture still looks reasonable.
I am not going to nit-pick over a few discrete buildings.
You know what? I agree, and I take back what I’ve said before about the London PG being a mess.
I’ve spent the last 2 hours flying around, including areas outside of the city centre that I remember looking terrible, and I’ve turned Orbx off. And now they look OK. I’m quite astonished. It’s definitely better than its ever been for me.
For the most part London looks OK from about 600ft. Not as good as Bilbao where I was dipping under 300ft with it looking good, but pretty reasonable for a flight sim and far from terrible as I remembered it. Some bits could be better, eg Canary Wharf, but most of it is acceptable.
I noticed you’re on quite a high end PC, mine is too, running all at ultra, but I’ve just switched from xbox series X. Although I’ve flown over London a lot in those couple of weeks, I’ve always had Orbx on and mostly been well above 1000ft so didn’t notice much difference.
Just for this I put the xbox back on to see if that it’s the culprit. Sitting still with the drone camera very low I get the same level of detail, but as the altitude increases there’s a step where the detail drops off and it looks melted and bad again, just like I always remembered it. It’s not very high either as you can see from this before and after.
Those are full screen captures and I can see it even on my phone but to make it a bit more obvious, like it is on the 65" TV, here’s a ~50% crop of the same images.
Notice how bad the rooftops look in the second picture. I took the good picture first and then just slightly moved the drone camera up and all of that detail unloaded at which point I took the second picture. Obviously then it’s definitely not a network/loading issue as MSFS deliberately threw the detail away right before my eyes.
So I think the problem is on the xbox I couldn’t fly low enough to get the highest level of detail - it takes too long to load in and I’ve passed it before I see it, but if I flew a bit higher then the quality drops off and it looks even worse, so I’d have to fly around 1500ft to make it actually look acceptable. On the PC this doesn’t seem to be an issue.
The series X is reasonably powerful so I imagine that anyone on a slightly weaker PC running less than ultra might experience the same limitation I have on the xbox.
Of course there’s still some bits that need improvement, eg. outside of the photogrammetry in greater London there chunks were the autogen presumably couldn’t handle the building density or something, and has left large bare patches that look quite awful.
I also felt that the PG even on xbox was loading much faster than it has before. Maybe I got lucky and the local CDN servers have less traffic than usual. Or maybe they’ve upgraded them. Or maybe it is just the moon phase.
Does anyone else experience this issue with cities not fully rendering. This photo attached is the NYC skyline from KEWR. I have seen other sims where the buildings have definition whereas mine don’t. Is there a setting that I need to adjust or is this a MSFS limitation. I also have NYC in my manual cache. High/Ultra settings. i7 rtx 4080
Yep - still to this day. Almost have to fly over the area a few times for it to render correctly.
