Pico 4 and OpenXR Toolkit

I got a q3 too and my later headset too a pico4. Isnt the new oxrtools not for q3 too ?

What did you find different ?

Had no chance to try pcvr with q3 as bought ut while on holiday and should return back today

My specs 4080 and 12700k. Usually prefer simming on xp12 though

I did feel it same. Q3 wasnt upgrade vs pico 4. Money saved.

Is there a performance uptick switching to this from SteamVR? I have things behaving well but if there is a free performance gain from ditching SteamVR in the middle then I’m happy to do so.

I run it. 4-7fps on ultra in Pico 4. 5800X3D and 4090
ethernet to USB-c tethered,
Godlike HEVC 10Bit,
SSW Disabled,
Sim on Ultra TOLD 400 OLOD 200 DLSS Quality
light shafts, bloom and Ambient Occlusion off
Toolkit Override 4320x4320, FFR Quality Wide, Turbo ON
Gets me 60-65fps on 72Hz mode in the countryside.
When I hit Cities like NYC london, drop to DLSS Balanced and keep flying.
SteamVR overhead can be 10% on CPU.

Thanks - you are running the same spec as myself. Will give this a whirl over the weekend.

I think you have slightly too much override. Try 4000x4000 and enjoy 72fps. There is no big diffrence 4000x4000 vs 4300x4300.

Just too check with this new openxr runtime:

  • Install new runtime.
  • Disable VD plugin in SteamVR then exit SteamVR.
  • Switch OpenXR runtime with switcher.
  • Launch VD.
  • Launch MSFS.
  • Launch VD in headset and connect to PC but do not click on Start SteamVR.
  • Once MSFS is running, use usual short cut to initiate VR in game?

Are the above steps correct? Just planning ahead.

you have a 7800X3D and i have a 5800X3D and there’s your 5-10fps. I have to cut too much rendering and input to get 72fps+ so I fly quite well at 60fps without SSW.

Seems to depend on whether you run a steam copy or an MS store copy. I run MS gamepass copy and only installed and ran VD and launched from my desktop the sim and it worked. I had no need for the switcher. I never touched SteamVR. Didn’t launch it at all in VD.
My Brother with a Steam bought copy seem to have needed to run the switcher.
I’m not sure if he had launched steamVR inadvertently. I know the switcher is needed only in trouble shooting or to assign runtimes if you play steamVR games and openXR games after the fact.

Either way you have the steps but possible can cut out a few in betweens. Try installing and launch VD and then from desktop shortcut, not in VD Games directory, launching sim.

Taking once again an opportunity for a dumb question: Does that also work with older video cards ?
I’m using an old GTX 1070ti with my Pico4, and I would be very glad to get rid of SteamVR…
Is my understanding correct that I can bypass it with the latest version of the OpenXR toolkit ?

PS: also, am I getting confused between the OpenXR runtimes and the OpenXR toolkit ?

Replying to myself here.
Of course it does work with older video cards too.
Instructions given by other members above were a bit misleading/incomplete and I had not understood at first what kind of runtimes we were talking about. After reading the wiki by Mbucchia, I could understand there was a special .MSI file to download and install, and after that things worked properly.

Not much performance gain on my old hardware unfortunately, but getting rid of SteamVR was totally worth it, so I’m keeping that runtime preciously

Followed the instructions/advice above from C0rsten and installed this new programme successfully. Despite my misgivings about my tech abilities it went without problem.

So then took it for a flight, continuing my world tour and found VR started up much more easily and seemed to run smoother, although that is subjective as I didn’t have the FPS counter on. I didn’t get the clearer images I was hoping for but I suppose I’m probably up against the limits with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and RTX4070.

I’m still a happy bunny!

Yup, gave it a quick test tonight. Was simply a case of installing the VDOpenXR runtime and not starting SteamVR at all. Worked flawlessly. I’m running SSW in the Pico4 so was locked to 45fps as usual in sim but will turn that off next time round and see if there was any uptick in performance. Without SSW I was seeing an average of ~56fps using SteamVR so will be able to tell pretty quickly.
I’ve still to play around with FFR but may give that a whirl as well since extreme edges are not clear anyway so wouldn’t be losing any image quality but may be able to gain some performance.

hello, how to install VirtualDesktopXR? I loaded the main.zip.

greetings

First you have to have oxr toolkit installed. Then just install the VirtualDesktop-OpenXR-0.6.0.msi. Then use xrpicker-gui.exe to change runtime for VD-OXR. Then go to steamVR and remove Virtual Desktop from “addons” list. Then just open streamer in pc and VD in pico 4 and connect to your computer. Final step is “enter VR” in MSFS and you are now in VR without SteamVR.

“Then use xrpicker-gui.exe to change runtime for VD-OXR. Then go to steamVR and remove Virtual Desktop from “addons” list.”

These two steps were not required for me. It seems the first part is only required if the correct runtime is not being utilised when switching to VR in sim. The second part will just remove the Lauch SteamVR option in Virtual Destop so you don’t inadvertently start that. I guess depending on people’s configurations, your mileage may vary.

Anyone run Pico OS 5.8.2? any problems?

Couple of hours this afternoon, nothing that I could put the blame on Pico 5.8.2 for.
Still trying to tweak the graphic settings to reduce/get rid of stuttering on close up views for example when taxiing. What does surprise me is that cranking up the Toolkit Override to 4000 doesn’t seem to make any difference to the performance.

did you come from G2? SteamVR has a bug that locks you to 3240. I run Pico from 4000 to 5300 at TLOD 400 and OLOD 200. sure 35-37fps but man it looks good for sightseeing.

Now using VD-OXR and have disabled Steam but no never had G2. I also checked for the 3240 bug beforehand but not present.
